1. 개요

AC30은 영국의 음향기기 제조사 및 브랜드인 VOX에서 1959년부터 생산중인 기타 앰프이다.

복스 앰프 초창기 제품인 AC1/15, AC2/30, 그리고 사진으로 나와있지는 않으나, G1/10 앰프 관련 내용 또한 볼 수 있다.

복스 브랜드의 소유주였던 제닝스 뮤지컬 인더스트리즈(JMI)에서 일하던 빅 밴드 기타리스트 딕 데니(Dick Denney)[3]는 1950년대 당시 늘어만 가는 일렉트릭 기타의 수요를 보고 이에 상응할 수 있는 기타 앰프를 제작하기로 한 JMI의 창업자 토머스 제닝스의 요청에 의해 스카웃되어 1957년경 복스의 기타 앰프들을 제작하기로 한다. 이렇게 등장한 것이 바로 AC1/15 앰프[4]와 AC2/30 앰프였는데[5], 이들은 비슷한 시기 생산되던 펜더 앰프들과는 묘하게 다르면서도 매력적인 소리 덕에 상업적으로도 좋은 판매고를 거두었다. 이들은 지금 기준에서는 특이하게도 케이지 형태의 캐비넷을 채용하였는데, 지금의 앰프 헤드처럼 원할 때는 앰프의 섀시만을 떼어내어 들고다니고, 연주할 때는 외장형 케이스 안에 넣고, 마찬가지로 복스에서 제작된 비브라토 유닛과 함께 연결하여 사용할 수 있는 구조였다. 당시에는 기타 앰프보다는 여러 악기들을 위한 다용도 앰프로 홍보되었던 만큼 기타 연주자들 뿐만 아니라 아코디언 연주자들에게도 널리 사용된다.

하지만 이들의 생각보다도 일렉트릭 기타라는 악기의 발전 속도는 매우 빨랐고, 채 5년도 되지 않아 많은 기타리스트들이 더욱 높은 출력과 서스테인을 내어주는 기타 앰프를 요구하게 된다. 특히 섀도우즈의 기타리스트 행크 마빈은 기존에 복스에서 생산하고 있던 AC-15 기타 앰프의 출력이 아쉬우니 좀 더 강한 기타 앰프를 만들어달라는 요청을 복스에게 하게되는데, 이에 부응한 복스는 딕 데니와 함께 AC-15를 기반으로 더욱 강력한 출력을 내는 기타 앰프의 개발을 시작하였고, 최종적으로 1959년에 최초의 AC30 모델이 시장에 선보여진다.

1959년에 처음 발매된 AC30은 지금의 AC30 하면 떠오르는 그런 느낌과는 약간 달랐는데, 마치 펜더의 TV 프론트 트위드 앰프들과 비슷한 형태의 캐비넷을 사용하였으며, 스피커도 기존의 AC1/15와 동일하게 하나만을 장착하였다. 하지만 해당 앰프 발매 직후, 막상 JMI에서는 미국제 펜더 앰프들과의 더 효과적인 경쟁을 위해 기존의 하나의 스피커만을 사용하던 AC30 앰프의 설계를 두 개의 스피커를 장착하는 것으로 변경하였으며, 그렇게 1960년에 두 번째 AC30 모델인 AC30/4 Twin 모델이 등장한다. 12인치 셀레스천 스피커 두 개, 일반 채널과 비브라토 채널에 2개씩 배정된 총 4개의 인풋으로 무장한 AC30/4 Twin 모델은 출력 상으로나, 스피커 갯수상으로나 엄밀히 말하면 기존 AC15를 두 개 합쳐놓은 것에 가까운 물건이었다. 같은 해, 복스는 기존의 TV 프론트 디자인을 쇄신하여 지금 많은 사람들에게 익숙할 그 복스 특유의 캐비넷 디자인을 선보인다. 당연히 기존 AC15, AC30 또한 이 캐비넷 디자인으로 일괄 변경된다.

1960년, 복스는 기존에 생산되던 AC30/4 Twin 모델을 일괄적으로 AC30/6 모델로 개량하여 생산하기 시작한다. 이 AC30/6 모델들은 인풋이 4개였던 전작과는 달리 인풋이 총 6개가 마련되어 있었으며, 종종 발진음이나 노이즈를 일으키고는 하던 EF86 프리앰프관과는 별도로 동작되는, 12AX7 프리앰프관들을 통해 음색을 만드는 세 번째 채널을 동작한 구조를 가지게 되었다. 처음에는 각각 트레블(Treble), 베이스(Bass), 노말(Narmal)이라 이름붙은 3개의 AC30/6 바리에이션이 선보여졌으나, 섀도우즈의 기타리스트 행크 마빈이 해당 앰프의 톤 노브 서킷의 문제점에 대해 피드백해주자 이를 반영, 이후 딕 데니가 펜더 트윈 앰프의 톤 서킷을 리버스 엔지니어링하여 가져온 브릴리언트 유닛(Brilliant Unit)이라는 두 개의 톤 노브[6]가 앰프 후면에 추가되었으며, 이 기능은 몇년 뒤에는 아예 공식적으로 프론트 패널에 옮겨진 뒤 탑 부스트(Top Boost)라는 새로운 이름을 얻는다.

1962년 7월, 영국 리버풀 출신의 젊은이 두 명이 복스에서 생산된 AC15 트윈 앰프와 AC30 트윈 앰프를 구매해간다. 두 젊은이는 자신들이 활동하던 밴드의 레코딩과 공연에 복스의 앰프를 사용하였으며, 결과적으로 밴드의 데뷔 앨범이 영국 차트를 휩쓴데다, 아예 브리티시 인베이전이라는 엄청난 문화 현상을 만들어내면서 당연히 복스의 앰프들은 그 인지도가 매우 높아진다.

AC30은 복스 앰프를 대표하는 상징적인 기타 앰프로, 비슷하게 클린 톤 사운드로 유명한 펜더의 기타 앰프들이 소위 말하는 아메리칸 클린 톤을 상징하는 앰프 시리즈라면 VOX AC30은 브리티쉬 클린 톤을 상징하는 기타 앰프라고 평가된다.[8] 펜더 앰프의 클린 톤과는 사뭇 다른, 중음역대가 강조되는 미드 험프 형태의 EQ를 가지기에 직진성이 매우 강하며, 전체적으로 밀도가 높은 느낌을 준다. 펜더 앰프가 상대적으로 가볍고 찰랑찰랑거리는 느낌이라면 AC30은 선명하고 굵게 앞으로 밀고 나오는 느낌이라고 비유할 수 있으며, 이러한 톤적 특징 덕에 구미권에서는 차임 벨(Chime Bell), 쟁글(Jangle)이라는 단어로 비유하기도 한다.

이러한 톤적 특징이 생긴 가장 큰 이유는 앰프 회로가 네거티브 피드백(Negative Feedback)[9]을 유발하는지 여부 때문이었는데, 펜더의 앰프들이 거의 모든 제품에 네거티브 피드백이 유발되도록 회로를 설계한 데 반해, 복스의 AC15, AC30 같은 앰프들은 네거티브 피드백이 발생하지 않도록 회로를 설계하였고, 결과적으로 중음역대가 더욱 증대되고 연주자의 터치 다이나믹에 대단히 민감한 회로가 된 것이다.

하지만 그럼에도 해당 앰프에는 큰 단점도 있었는데, 바로 중, 저음역대가 강조되는 험버커 픽업이 장착된 기타를 연결하여 칠 경우 전반적인 사운드가 너무 먹먹하게 출력된다는 것이었다. AC30의 이러한 톤 특성은 당시 여러 아티스트들에게 골칫거리였는데, 이걸 해결하기 위해 몇몇 기타리스트들은 기타와 앰프 사이에 고음역대를 강조시켜주는 트레블 부스터 이펙터를 추가로 연결해 사용하기 시작하였고, 곧 이 세팅은 브리티쉬 록 기타리스트들 사이에서 매우 보편적인 장비 세팅이 된다. 이 때 주로 사용되었던 장비가 바로 달라스 아비터에서 생산된 레인지마스터(Rangemaster)라는 트레블 부스터였는데, 로리 갤러거, 퀸의 브라이언 메이 또한 레인지마스터 + AC30 앰프 조합을 즐겨 사용한 가장 대표적인 아티스트이다.

1960년대 출시 당시에는 브리티쉬 인베이전에 힘입어 비틀즈를 포함한 당대 수많은 록 기타리스트들에게 사랑받았으며, 이후 1990년대를 거치며 등장한 브릿팝, 얼터너티브 록 씬에서도 다양한 연주자들에 의해 사랑받고 있다.

현재 복스는 과거 1950년대 ~ 1960년대에 생산된 AC30 앰프와 거의 유사한 방식으로 손납땜을 통해 하나하나 와이어링하여 생산하는 핸드 와이어드 시리즈를 통해 최대한 빈티지 사양을 살린 AC30 모델 또한 생산하고 있으나, 몇몇 매니아들 사이에서는 여전히 빈티지 AC30의 그 소리를 들을 수 없다는 불만이 제기되어 왔으며, 이로 인해 빈티지 AC30 사운드의 재현이라는 캐치프레이즈 하에 해당 앰프를 복각하는 브랜드나 공방도 제법 찾아볼 수 있다. 국내에서는 하이엔드 핸드 와이어드 기타 앰프 브랜드로 유명한 매치리스(Matchless) 또한 빈티지 AC30의 복각을 모토로 시작된 커스텀 기타 앰프 브랜드이다.

워낙에 복스라는 브랜드 자체를 상징하는 제품이다보니, 엔트리급 모델들을 포함하여 복스에서 생산되는 거의 대부분의 기타 앰프들은 AC-30 특유의 디자인을 따라가는 경향이 있으며, 멀티 이펙터나 헤드폰 앰프 등 제품에도 AC30 관련 시뮬은 무조건 포함되어 있을 정도이다.
