1. 개요

연속성이 있는 데이터에서 뽑아낸 값으로 여러 가지가 혼재된 데이터로부터 정확히 어떤 데이터가 있는 것인지를 분리해내서 그것의 세기를 기록한 것이다. 최초로 사용된 분야는 광학분야지만 현재는 과학 전반적인 분야에서 대중적으로 쓰이는 용어이다.

용어 spectrum의 유래는 학술적 외래 용어가 대부분 그렇듯이 라틴어 명사이다. 본다는 뜻의 동사 specere로부터 파생된 명사 spectrum(직역하면 "보이는 것" 혹은 "나타나는 것")[1]에서 나온 말이다. 이는 영단어 specter와 유래가 같다. 복수형은 라틴어의 복수형을 그대로 따라서 spectra이다.[2]

스펙트럼은 가시광선에서만 관찰할 수 있다고 생각하기 쉽지만 실은 전자기파로 분류되는 모든 종류의 파는 스펙트럼을 관찰할 수 있으며,[3] 스펙트럼 분석 자체는 현재는 광학 말고도 다른 분야에서 많이 사용되고 있다.

현재 대한민국의 교육과정에서 물리[4], 화학[5], 지구과학[6]에서 똑같이 배우는 거의 유일한 개념이다.

Continuous spectrum

말 그대로 끊어짐 없이 연속적으로 나타난 스펙트럼. 햇빛과 같은 백색광을 분광기에 쪼이면 나타나며, 아이작 뉴턴에 의해 세상에 알려지고 색이 일곱 빛깔 무지개로 정해졌다. 일설에 의하면 하필 일곱 빛깔인 이유는 도레미파솔라시에 맞추기 위해서였다고 한다. 확실한 근거는 없어 일설에 그치지만, 유럽 외 문화권에서는 무지갯빛을 6색이나 5색으로 인식하는 경우도 있으니 서양의 7음계 기준으로 색깔을 맞췄다는 말도 어느 정도 일리는 있는 편이다.

위의 이미지는 수소의 선 스펙트럼으로, 위의 것이 흡수 스펙트럼이고 아래의 것이 방출 스펙트럼이다. 연속 스펙트럼의 빛을 저온의 기체에 통과시켜 분광하면 흡수 스펙트럼이 나오고, 고온의 기체를 분광하면 방출 스펙트럼이 나온다. 이때, 저온의 기체와 고온의 기체의 성분원소가 같으면 당연히 흡수 스펙트럼의 검은 부분과 방출 스펙트럼의 선 부분이 같다.

금속 원소의 불꽃 반응의 색깔 등을 통해서도 볼 수 있다. 원소의 종류에 따라 색과 굵기, 위치, 수 등이 달라진다.

물질에 여러 가지 원소가 섞여있다면 각 원소의 스펙트럼과 구조에 따른 스펙트럼이 모두 합쳐져서 나타난다. 그러하기 때문에 물질을 분석할 때 다른 기기를 함께 직렬로 이용하여 물질의 구조와 원소를 알아낼 수 있다. 따라서 별빛의 선 스펙트럼에서 나오는 방출선과 흡수선을 잘 분석하고 관찰한다면, 우주가 어떤 물질로 구성되어있고, 원소 분포가 어떻게 이루어져있는지도 파악할 수 있다.

단원자 분자나 금속 기체와 같은 단일 원자(또는 이온)는 원자 내에서 전자의 에너지 준위 천이에 따른 스펙트럼선을, 분자는 그 회전 준위나 진동 준위[7] 간의 천이에 따른 스펙트럼을 만든다. 특히 분자에서 진동 천이와 회전 천이가 함께 일어나는 경우에는, 여러 스펙트럼선이 촘촘히 늘어선 형태의 밴드 스펙트럼을 만든다.[8]

원자의 전자 천이에 따른 방출선이나 흡수선은, 고전역학적으로 해석할 때는 원자에 속박된 전자를 일종의 조화 진동자로 해석하여 공명에 의해 빛을 흡수하거나 진동에 의해 빛을 방출하는 것으로 볼 수 있다. 물론 실제 복사천이는 양자역학적 해석이 필요한 현상이기 때문에, 개별 선의 파장이나 세기 등은 양자역학을 통해 해석하고 예측해야 한다.

특히 천문학에서의 분광 관측에 있어서 중요한 유의사항을 소개하자면, 특정 원자나 이온, 분자가 존재한다고 해서 무조건 그 물질의 스펙트럼이 검출되는 것은 아니다. 에너지 준위가 특정 준위로 들뜨기 위한 에너지가 충족되는 온도 조건과 같이, 필요한 조건이 만족되는 경우에만 그 물질의 스펙트럼이 생성된다. 그러므로 어떤 물질의 스펙트럼이 검출되는 경우에는 그 물질이 존재한다는 사실을 알 수 있지만, 스펙트럼에서 어떤 물질의 스펙트럼선이 검출되지 않는다고 해서 그 물질이 없다고 단언할 수는 없다. 태양 광구에서는 헬륨 스펙트럼이 검출되지 않지만[9] 그렇다고 태양에 헬륨이 없는 것은 아닌 것을 대표적인 예로 들 수 있다.

2.2.2. 금지선

금지선(禁止線)은 에너지 준위 사이의 금지된 전환 과정에서 방출되는 선 스펙트럼이다. 원자나 이온의 전자 천이의 경우, 가장 천이가 일어나기 쉬운 전기쌍극자 천이의 형태로 천이가 일어나기 위해서는 다음과 같은 선택 규칙을 만족해야 한다.

이 조건을 만족하지 않는 경우 자기쌍극자 천이나 전기 사중극자 천이와 같은 다른 과정에 의한 천이가 일어나는데, 이들은 낮은 준위로 천이하는 데 걸리는 시간이 길어 발생 가능성이 낮기 때문에 금지천이로 분류된다. 또란 전기쌍극자 천이의 나머지 선택 규칙은 모두 만족하지만 스핀 양자수가 1만큼 변하는(스핀이 뒤집히는) 천이는 준금지천이(semi forbidden transition)가 된다.

비록 이러한 천이가 금지되어 있지만, 양자역학적 효과에 의해 낮은 확률로 자발적 발생에 대한 적은 가능성이 있다. 일반적으로 지구의 하층 대기처럼 보통의 밀도가 높은 가스에서는 금지천이를 일으킬 수 있는 상태의 원자나 이온이 자발적인 금지천이를 일으켜 복사를 방출하기 전에 다른 입자와의 충돌을 통해 천이하기 때문에 금지천이가 일어나기가 매우 어렵다. 그러나 성운과 같은 밀도가 낮은 가스에서는 충돌에 의한 들뜸이 활발하지 않기 때문에 들뜸에 의한 천이의 발생 빈도가 낮아 원자나 이온이 금지천이를 일으킬 수 있는 준위에 장기간 머무를 수 있으므로 금지천이가 실제로 일어나 금지선이 형성될 수 있다.

금지선은 [O III]과 같이 양쪽 대괄호로 표기하며, 준금지선은 C II]과 같이 오른쪽 대괄호로 표기한다.

좌파와 우파 사이에 수많은 단계가 있는 좌우 스펙트럼이나, 더 많은 축을 가지는 정치적 스펙트럼이 한 예다. 꼭 축들 위에 늘어서있지 않더라도 자폐 스펙트럼처럼 다양하면서도 연속적인 양상을 보이는 경우에도 마찬가지로 스펙트럼으로 부른다.

특정 분야에 대한 범위나 정도를 말하는 관용어로도 쓰인다. 종잡을 수 없을 정도로 입체적인 성격이거나, 지식의 폭과 분야가 넓고 다양하면 스펙트럼이 넓다는 관용구를 쓴다. 여기서 말하는 스펙트럼은 연속 스펙트럼이다. 말 그대로 여러 색깔이 연속되어 넓게 퍼져 있는 연속 스펙트럼에 빗대어 표현하는 의미.
