1. 개요
數 / Grammatical Number문법에서 수란 명사의 수량과 관련된 문법 형식이다.
이 문법적 개념을 적용할 수 없는 명사 범주를 불가산명사라 한다.
2. 수의 종류
수의 종류에는 흔히 단수와 복수가 있다.더 나아가 복수라는 개념을 나누어 쌍수/양수(dual)라 하여 딱 2개 있는 것을 특징적으로 묶는 범주가 따로 있거나, 3개 있는 것을 묶는 삼수(trial)라는 특이한 개념이 있는 언어들도 있다. 4개를 묶는 것은 자연언어에는 존재하지 않는다고 한다. 그 외에 소복수(paucal)라고 하나가 아닌 '조금 있는 것'을 묶는 언어들도 있다.
2.1. 단수
단수(單數, singular)는 명사 또는 대명사가 하나일 때 쓰인다.2.2. 쌍수
쌍수(雙數, dual)는 양수(兩數)라고도 한다.매우 드물게 존재한다. 정확히 말하자면, 과거에도 그리 흔하게 보이는 문법 요소는 아니었으나 그래도 꽤 많은 언어에서 존재했다. 허나 시간이 지나며 언어가 변화·분화하는 과정에서 거진 대다수의 언어에서 쌍수가 소멸하거나 복수에 통합되었다.
가장 유명한 사례는 표준 아랍어이고, 마이너하지만 슬로베니아어에도 존재한다. 사어까지 범위를 넓히면 고전 이집트어, 교회 슬라브어, 고전 그리스어와 인도유럽조어가 있으며 산스크리트어에도 있다. 고대 영어에도 존재했었으나 지금은 사라졌다.
쌍수라는 명칭에서 알 수 있듯이 2개라는 의미를 내포하며 3개 이상부터 복수형으로 구분한다. 이를 테면 아랍어에서 '눈'(an eye)은 عَيْن(ʕayn)이고 '두 눈'(two eyes)을 의미하는 쌍수는 عَيْنَيْن(ʕaynayn)이다. 한편 '3개 이상의 눈들'(복수)은 عُيُون(ʕuyūn)이다.
그렇지만 아랍인들이 일상 생활에서 사용하는 아랍어 방언에서는 거의 쓰이지 않으며 영어처럼 쌍수 대신 복수를 사용하는데, 이런 현상은 표준 아랍어에서도 나타난다. 게다가 쌍수형 명사가 쓰였다면 그에 맞춰 형용사나 동사도 쌍수형으로 활용해야하는데, 아랍인들이 공식적인 자리나 방송에서 표준 아랍어로 말할 때는 쌍수형 대신 복수형의 활용형을 쓰는 경우가 있다. 심지어 꾸란에서도 이러한 수의 불일치는 왕왕 볼 수 있다.[1] 이에 따라, 아랍어 문법의 쌍수 소멸 현상은 고전 아랍어 시절부터 진행되었다고 볼 수 있다.
초기 슬라브어들은 대개 쌍수가 있었지만 지금은 슬로베니아어[2]를 제외하면 대부분 사라졌다. 다만 타 인도유럽어에 비해 비교적 최근까지 쌍수가 남아있었기 때문에 쌍수형에서 유래한 불규칙 복수형과 같이 쌍수가 있었던 흔적이 여러 슬라브어에서 나타난다.
일상적으로 '눈(目)', '팔', '손', '귀' 같이 대체로 하나의 쌍을 이루는 것들에서 쌍수 표현을 볼 수 있는데 이런 경우가 아닐지라도 쌍수가 쓰이기도 한다.
2.3. 삼수
삼수(三數, trial)는 명사가 정확히 세 개가 있는 것을 말한다.주로 오스트로네시아어족 언어에 있으며 뉴기니 섬과 마셜 제도에서 쓰이는 툴라이어, 리히르어, 마셜어 등에 있다.
2.4. 복수
복수(複數, plural)는 명사가 두 개 이상(쌍수가 있는 언어에서는 3개 이상) 있는 것을 말한다.거의 모든 인구어에서는 굴절로 인해 단복을 명시한다. 제일 잘 알려진 것이 영어/프랑스어/스페인어/포르투갈어의 ~s. 독일어에서는 약변화(~en)와 강변화 1식(변화 없음), 2식(~e), 3식(~er)으로 나뉜다. 이 중 단수의 일부 모음은 변모음(Umlaut)으로 변하기도 한다. 거의 모든 인구어에서 복수형이 많이 쓰이는 데다가 형태가 불규칙하게 바뀌기도 하기 때문에 문법을 배울 때 매우 중요하다.
영어에서는 일반적으로 뒤에 s를 붙이지만[3] 라틴어에서 유래한 -us로 끝나는 단어들의 경우 -i로 바뀌게 된다.
다만 각종 관습과 단어의 유래에 대한 논란들 때문에 상당히 골치아파지는 경우도 있다. 대표적인 경우가 virus의 복수형. viri가 아니라 viruses를 쓴다. 참고로 라틴어에서 virus의 복수형은 vira이다. 중성명사 2변화를 취한다. bus도 라틴어 유래 단어이지만(omnibus에서 왔다), 일반적인 영어 복수형(buses)을 취한다. 또 'octopus'나 'campus'처럼 라틴어와는 무관한 단어를 'octopi'나 'campi'로 잘못 쓰는 경우도 있고, 일부러 현학적인 태도를 패러디하거나 웃기려고 복잡하게 표현할 때 이런 가짜 복수형 표현을 사용하기도 한다. 예를 들어 토요타 프리우스(Prius)를 Prii라고 하거나 엘비스 프레슬리(Elvis)를 Elvii라고 하는 것이다. Prius의 진짜 복수형은 Pria고, Elvis의 진짜 복수형은 Elvo다.
영어에서 3인칭 단수 현재형에 붙는 s는 기본적으로 [z(즈)]로 발음하지만,[4] s 바로 앞의 음(동사원형 어미의 발음)이 [p(프)], [k(크)], [f(흐)], [t(트)] 등 비(非)치찰 무성음[5]일 때는 [s(스)]로 발음한다. s가 아닌 es를 붙이는 단어에서 es는 [ɪz(이즈)]로 발음한다.
-um으로 끝나는 경우, -a로 바뀌게 된다. 라틴어 제2변화 중성명사에서 유래했다. 좋은 예로 stadium-stadia[6], medium-media, datum-data[7].
한국어, 일본어, 중국어에서는 명사의 복수형이 아주 단순한 편인데다[8] 이조차도 영어를 포함한 많은 인도유럽어에서처럼 단수형과 엄격하게 구분하여 사용하지도 않는다. 정말 필요하면 그냥 몇 개인지 표기하면 그만이다. 예를 들어, 영어 문장 ‘There are many pencils and erasers on the desk.’를 복수형 명사를 사용하여 우리말로 직역하면 '책상 위에 많은 연필들과 지우개들이 있다'가 되겠지만 사실 우리말에서는 ‘연필들과 지우개들’이라는 표현은 굉장히 어색하고, 실생활에서 그렇게 말하는 경우도 거의 없기 때문에 ‘책상 위에 연필과 지우개가 많이 있다’[9] 정도로 복수를 생략해 번역하는 것이 훨씬 더 자연스럽다. 정말 꼭 개수를 알리는 게 중요하다면 ‘책상 위에 연필 12개와 지우개 2개가 있다’ 같이 써야 한다.
비슷한 맥락에서 인도유럽어족 언어를 한국어로 번역할 때도 보통 관례상 단수형으로 표현하는 경우가 종종 있다. 특히 s 복수는 스, 즈 등으로 바꾸면 괜히 발음만 힘들기 때문에 복수형을 단수형으로 바꿔 버리는 경우가 꽤 있다. 인도유럽어권 화자들과 달리 한국어 화자들에게는 대상인 단수인지 복수인지 여부가 중요한 정보가 아니었기 때문에 이런 관례가 생긴 것으로 보인다.[10] 그래서 스페셜 포스를 '스페셜 포시즈'라고 적지 않고 리그 오브 레전드(League of Legends)를 '리그 오브 레전즈' 같이 표기하지 않는다. 대상이 사물이면 한 개인지 여러 개인지, 사람이면 개인인지 집단인지 어차피 보면 다 아는데 굳이 붙여야 하나라는 느낌에서 생략하는 것으로 보인다. 물론 이런 언어 생활이 으레 그렇듯 그런 경향이 있다는 거지 법칙처럼 꼭 생략해야 하는 건 아니다. 다음과 같이 단수형이 기본인데 복수형으로 적거나, 복수형을 쓰거나, 그때 그때 다른 반례도 존재한다.
- 콘텐츠(contents), 스포츠(sports): 일본식 외래어 표기의 영향이다.
- 피트(feet), 데이터(data), 브로콜리(broccoli), 미토콘드리아(mitochondria): 각각 foot, datum, broccolo, mitochondrion으로 단수형이 따로 있으나, 이를 쓰지 않고 복수형 그대로 옮긴다.
- 뉴욕 양키스, LA 다저스 등의 해외 스포츠 팀
- 어벤저스, 가디언즈 오브 갤럭시 등의 미국 만화 타이틀
- 코만도: 현실의 코만도 부대는 대부분 코만도라고 적는데, 게임 코만도스 시리즈는 코만도스로 적는다.
인도유럽어의 독특한 어법으로 장엄복수형이라는 것이 있는데, 왕족이나 고위 귀족들이 자신을 단수가 아닌 복수형으로 표현하는 것으로써, 과인이나 짐이라고 번역할 수 있겠지만 실제 권위는 그 보다 높다. 심지어 일신교인 기독교, 유대교, 이슬람교에서도 신이 자신을 가리킬 때 복수형을 사용하기도 한다.

소복수(少複數, paucal)는 2개 이상이긴 하지만 적은 수를 특정하여 가리키는 말이다.쌍수, 삼수와 마찬가지로 모든 언어에 있는 것이 아니라 쿠르만지 쿠르드어 같은 일부 언어에서 발견된다. 복수와의 차이는 복수는 두 자리수나 세 자리수를 넘어가도 복수를 쓰지만 소복수는 2개에서 4개 정도를 뜻한다. 쌍수와 삼수와의 다른 점은 쌍수는 정확히 2개만을 뜻하고 삼수는 정확히 3개만을 뜻하지만 소복수는 쌍수와 삼수보다는 수의 범위가 더 넓다.
3. 수와 관련되는 문법 개념
명사 이외에 해당 명사와 관련된 단어들이 명사의 조건에 맞춰 변화하는 것을 언어학에서는 '일치'(agreement)라 한다. 이때 명사의 조건에는 대개 성, 수, 격, 인칭이 손꼽힌다.영어에서는 수에 따른 동사의 일치를 흔히 볼 수 있다. 가령 주어에 해당하는 명사의 수에 따라 동사의 형식이 바뀐다. 그러나 이 역시 영어에서는 3인칭 단수에서만 '-(e)s'를 붙이는 식으로 나타나며 be 동사만이 수에 따라 다양하게 변할 뿐이다. 이를 흔히 '수의 일치'라고 부른다. 특히 주어가 2인칭(You)인 경우 실제 사람 수와 관계없이 무조건 복수로 수 일치를 해야 한다는 골치아픈 특성이 있다. 여담으로 이는 2인칭 단수 대명사 thou가 사라져서 2인칭 복수 대명사 You가 단수 복수 모두에 사용되기 때문이고 어찌됐든 복수에 맞춰서 수 일치를 하기 때문이다.
해당 명사를 꾸며주는 단어들 역시 명사의 수에 따라 영향을 받는다. 영어에서는 이 일치가 매우 약화되어 형용사들은 명사의 수와 무관하게 일정한 형식을 유지한다. 반면 프랑스어나 스페인어에서는 피수식어의 성/수에 따른 수식어의 성/수 일치도 존재한다.
