1. 한국의 성씨

한국 팽(彭)씨의 본관은 용강(龍岡)과 절강(浙江)이 있다. 그 밖에 신평(新平)·영천(榮川)·안악(安岳)·강령(康翎) 등이 문헌에 나타나 있다.

이처럼 용강 팽씨와 절강 팽씨는 둘다 중국계 귀화 성씨라고 알려져 있으나, 이미 고려 시대에 팽몽령(彭夢齡)[1] 등의 관직자가 알려져 있으므로 팽씨는 여타 성씨와 마찬가지로 중국계가 아닌 한반도 토착 성씨로 보인다.

용강 팽씨는 고려 충정왕 때 팽적(彭逖)이 시조로 희성(稀姓) 중에서는 역사가 긴 편이다. 팽적은 금릉 출신으로, 1351년 노국대장공주를 배종하여 들어왔다고 한다.# 본관인 용강은 현재의 북한 평안남도 룡강군이다. 남한의 2011년 인구는 633명이다.

한편 절강 팽씨는 임진왜란 때 원군으로 조선에 온 명나라 장군 팽우덕(彭友德)의 후손으로 전해지고 있다.# 팽우덕은 아들 팽신고(彭信古)와 함께 많은 전공을 세웠는데, 그 후손이 조선에 귀화하였다고 한다. 남한의 2000년 인구는 1,578명이다. 참고로 절강은 중국 저장성으로, 저장성의 한자 표기를 한국어로 독음하면 절강성이 된다.

표기에 따라 맹씨와 혼동할 수 있기도 하다.

흔한 성씨는 아니지만 무협 소설에서는 매우 쉽게 접할 수 있다. 남궁세가, 사천당가 다음으로 자주 등장하는 무림세가인 하북팽가 때문.

1980년대에 대한민국 연예인 전체에서 팽씨는 팽현숙 혼자였는데 이것 때문에 최양락이 골때리는 일을 당한 적이 있었다. 비밀연애를 하던 도중 한 기자에게 들켜서 이를 엠바고 해달라 부탁했는데 기자가 '최양락. 팽모 연예인과 열애중.' 이라 기사를 쓰는 바람에 바로 들켜버렸다.#
