1. 개요
데이비드 보위의 8번째 스튜디오 앨범. 1974년 5월 24일 발매되었다. 보위의 마지막 글램 록 앨범이다.2. 상세
지기 스타더스트 활동 이후 보위는 여러가지 프로젝트를 준비하고 있었는데, 대부분이 무산되었다. 그 중에는 조지 오웰의 1984를 록 뮤지컬로 각색하려는 계획도 포함되어 있었는데 조지 오웰의 미망인이였던 소니아 오웰이 판권 제공을 거부하면서 이루어질 수 없었다. 프로젝트가 엎어지자 분노한 보위는 윌리엄 S. 버로스의 기법에 영향을 받은 자신만의 종말론적 시나리오를 만들기로 하고, 무산된 프로젝트에서 만들어진 곡 몇 개를 건져 새 앨범을 만들기로 한다.지기 스타더스트와 글램 록에 싫증이 난 보위는 할로윈 잭(Halloween Jack)이라는 새로운 페르소나를 만들어냈다. 할로윈 잭은 아이섀도우나 붉은 헤어스타일 등 지기와 닮은 면이 있었지만 화성에서 온 로큰롤 메시아라는 설정을 가진 지기와 달리 1984풍 디스토피아 도시에서 사는 쿨한 캐릭터라는 설정이다. 따라서 지기 시절의 백밴드인 화성에서 온 거미들을 해체하고 켄 스콧이나 믹 론슨과도 결별했다. 데뷔 초기 프로듀싱을 담당했던 토니 비스콘티를 불러오긴 했지만 현악 편곡만을 담당했고, 앨범 제작의 전체적인 과정은 보위 본인이 진두지휘했다. 앨범의 분위기는 글램 록의 그림자가 어느정도 남아있긴 하지만 더 강한 느낌의 개러지 록의 느낌이 나는 사운드로 바뀌었다. 일각에서는 훌륭한 프로토 펑크 앨범으로 평가하기도 한다. R&B나 펑크(funk)같은 흑인 음악의 요소가 일부 묻어나기도 하는데, 흑인 음악에 대한 보위의 헌사는 다음 앨범 Young Americans로 이어진다.
지나치게 음울하고 극적인 면 때문에 발매 당시 호불호가 갈렸지만 전작에 이어 상업적인 흥행을 이어나갔다. 캐나다, 영국에서 1위, 미국 차트에서 5위를 차지했고 미국에서 50만 장 이상을 판매해 골드를 달성했다. 그 백미는 발매 직후 북미에서 이루어진 Diamond Dogs 투어인데, 20년대 독일 표현주의 미술에 영향을 받은 무대 연출, 보위의 압도적인 카리스마와 무대 장악력으로 엄청난 반향을 일으켰다. 7월 10일에서 13일 분의 공연은 David Live라는 이름으로 라이브 앨범으로 발매되었다.

- 3번 트랙에서 5번 트랙까지는 모두 이어지는 구성이다. Diamond Dogs 앨범의 핵심 부분으로 평가받는다. 격정적이고 음울한 묘사가 극대화되는 장엄한 록 오페라 대곡으로 보위의 천재성을 엿볼 수 있는 부분. 후반부의 기타 솔로는 보위가 기타리스트로서도 훌륭한 연주자라는 것을 알 수 있다.
- 굉장히 짜임새 있는 서사를 지닌 곡과는 달리, 가사의 대부분은 컷업 기법으로 만들어졌다. 따라서 번역이 무의미하다고도 할 수 있는 가사.

- Big Brother와 이어지는 곡이다. "Brother", "Bro"가 반복되는 괴상한 엔딩을 장식한다. 본래는 brother가 반복되어야 할 것을 테이프가 뻑나며 첫 음절만 들어갔는데, 보위가 이게 더 재밌다며 토니 비스콘티에게 그대로 가자고 제안.

[1] 이미 앨범 완성 직후 소울 음악의 영향을 보위가 강하게 받고 있었기 때문에, 원곡과 버전이 전혀 다르다.[2] 후반에 플루트와 피아노 위주로 전개되는 리프는 사실 다른 곡이다. 정식으로 발매된 적 없는 Zion이라는 1984 뮤지컬을 위한 보위의 미공개 곡에서 따온 것. 따라서 Sweet Thing - Candidate - Sweet Thing (Reprise ) - Zion 으로 진행된다고도 볼 수 있다. 이 리프는 라이브에서도 Sweet Thing의 일부가 아닌 다음 트랙의 일부로 분류되며 투어 후반부부터는 아예 사라진다.[3] 알라딘 세인의 키보디스트/피아니스트. 이 앨범에서도 아방가르드적/재즈적 연주를 담당하며 연말의 투어까지 함께한다.
