그해 가장 빨리 팔린 앨범으로 기록되었으나 이 시기부터 데이비드 보위는 언론에 전혀 인터뷰를 하지 않았다. 그의 사후 앨범 작업에 참여했던 스태프들에 의하면, 2011년부터 비밀 유지서약을 포함하여 스태프를 모아 굉장히 천천히 작업되었다고 한다. 2004년 Reality 투어 도중 심근경색으로 인해 대중 노출에서 완전히 벗어난 보위가 2011년 갑작스레 Reality 투어에 참여했던 세션들 위주로 연락을 해왔고, 변호사를 통해 비밀유지에 동의한다면 앨범제작에 참여할 것을 권해왔다고 한다.[2] 레이블로부터의 일정 압박은 전혀 없었고[3] 그 덕분에 데이비드 보위는 완벽성을 추구할 수 있었다고. 새벽에도 수시로 스태프들을 불러내어 한두 시간 녹음을 하고 사라지거나 몇 시간씩 아무 말 없이 호불호를 나타내지 않으면서 스태프의 즉흥연주를 듣고 있거나 하는 식. 혹시나 곡의 일부라도 유출될까 절친한 연주자들에게마저 어떤 파트로 쓰이는지, 어떤 곡인지도 거의 알려주지 않은 채 "그냥 오랜만에 즐겁게 작업해 보는 거야. 발매될 수도 안 될 수도 있어." 라는 식으로 일관했다고.
처음 공개된 Where are we now?의 가사에는 과거 베를린의 여러 장소명이 여럿 등장하는데, 이는 보위가 헤로인 치료를 위해 서베를린에 머물며 베를린 3부작이 탄생했던 음악적 전성기 기간에 대한 노스텔지어적 의미를 담고 있다. "포츠담 광장" "뉘른베르크 거리" "보세브뤽 다리" 는 보위가 베를린에 있던 당시에는 장벽으로 막혀있었던 곳이기도 하다. 즉 이 곡을 통일된 독일에게 건네는 일종의 인사로 볼 수 있다.
뮤직비디오에는 "ms A Song For Norway"라고 적혀있는 티셔츠를 입은 실제 보위의 모습이 잠시 나오는데, 이는 보위가 데이비드 보위로서 브레이크 전 동거하던 여자친구 허마이오니 파딩게일이 그를 떠나게 된 계기가 된 뮤지컬의 제목이다. 뮤지컬 작업 중에 다른 사랑을 찾게 되어 그와 이별했는데, 덕분에 보위는 여자친구와 밴드를 다 잃어버렸다고. 단순히 시판 제품을 입고 있던 장면이 찍힌 것이라고 할 수 없는 것이, 앨범의 프로듀서와도 이 티셔츠의 문구에 대해 cheeky하다는 대화를 나눈 적이 있다[4]. 마치 자신의 삶 전체를 뒤돌아보는 듯한 앨범의 기조를 생각하면 자신의 아티스트 생활의 시작점까지 돌아갔다고 보는 편이 옳을 듯.
두 번째 싱글컷 The Stars는 보위가 겪었던 유명세와 셀레브리티적인 삶에 대한 이야기를 담고 있다. 뮤직비디오는 셀레브리티들이 일반 중산층 커플을 스토킹하고 그들을 흉내내다가 마침내 서로의 삶을 바꾸는 스토리인데, 노래 가사의 내용과 보위가 평소 셀레브리티적인 삶에 대한 불호를 드러낸 것을 생각하면 의미심장하다.
세 번째 싱글컷인 The Next Day는 지나친 유혈 묘사와 반기독교적 묘사로 인해 호불호가 많이 갈렸다. 천주교계의 성비위 문제를 비판하고자 직격을 날린 뮤직비디오였기에 의도는 훌륭했으나, 안 그래도 사타니즘 떡밥을 신나게 물고 있던 락안티들에게 본의 아니게 먹이를 던져주게 된 셈. The Stars와 더불어 잠시 19금이 걸렸다가 풀리기도 했다.
The Valentine's Day에 대해서는 총기난사 살인에 대한 비판이라는 의견이 일반적. 늦둥이 딸 렉시를 가진 후(2000~) 보위의 앞으로의 세상에 대한 시선은 부정적 방향으로 많이 달라졌다고 한다.[5]
보위 사후 토니 비스콘티의 인터뷰에 의하면 보위는 총기난사 살인을 일으킨 후 범인의 심리 상태에 대해서도 걱정하며 곡에 반영했다고 한다. 흥분 상태를 벗어난 후 자신이 무슨 짓을 벌였는지 안 후에 자기 자신에 대해 어떻게 생각할지 등을 고려했다고. 보위는 뮤직 비디오 감독의 수차례에 걸친 요청에도 단호히 총기가 뮤직비디오 전면에 등장하는 것을 반대했다고 하는데,[6] 근본적으로 총기 자체를 미국 사회에서 격리시켜야 한다고 생각하는 모양이다.
Love is Lost는 디럭스, 엑스트라 에디션의 발매를 기념하여 리믹스 버전이 싱글로서 발매되었다.
제임스 머피의 리믹스는 스티브 라이히의 박수 음악으로 시작 박자를 교란하는 현대적 음악성을 보여주고, 중간에 Ashes to Ashes의 신디사이저 리프를 훨씬 회한섞이게 사용하여, 허마이오니를 잃고 아버지를 잃은[7] 갓 히트 가수가 된 보위의 청춘 시절 이면에 섞인 절망에 대해 생각해 보게 만들어준다. 뮤비 제작에는 채 100달러가 들지 않았다고 하는데, Hours 앨범의 취소된 뮤직비디오에 사용하려던 보위의 페르소나 모습을 담은 목각 인형과 보위가 뉴욕 집에서 손을 씻는 장면 등을 연결하여 만들었다.
댓글에서는 보위가 마침내 "사람" 으로서 우리 앞에 모습을 드러냈다는 등의 해석을 하기도 했다.
항상 새로운 것을 시도하기를 원했고 이전을 되돌아보지 않았던 보위에게 상당히 이례적인 앨범으로, 자켓부터가 그의 젊은 시절을 상징하는 "Heroes"의 앨범을 수정한 것이다. 이 앨범 커버부터도 보위가 의도한 것으로, 7-80년대 자신의 사진을 기반으로 이전의 자신을 뒤집어엎는 자켓을 요구했다고 한다. 여러 드래프트중에 가장 무성의해 보이는 자켓이 선정되었으나 한편으로는 그 때문에 매우 혁명적이기도 했다. "Heroes"의 가사 중에는 '우린 단 하루 영웅이 될 수 있어(we can be heroes just for one day)'라는 대목이 있는데, 앨범명인 'The Next Day'가 그 단 하루가 지난 다음 날을 가리키는 것이라는 해석도 있다.
세 번째로 싱글컷된 곡. 카톨릭 성직자들 사이 만연한 성비위 문제를 비판하고자 하였으나, 비하의 여지를 띠고 유혈 묘사가 강하다는 점에 있어서 비판이 많았다. 특히 예수의 성혈이 간접적으로 묘사되는 바람에 곤혹을 치렀으며, 교황청에서 유감[8]과 동시에 용서를 표하는 성명을 발표하는 것으로 상황이 갈음되었다. "예수 발언" 에 대한 교황청의 용서 성명에 대해 코멘트를 남긴 비틀즈 멤버들과 달리, 이미 이 시기부터 공개적 발언을 삼가던 보위는 어떤 응답도 하지 않았다.

뮤직비디오에서 거의 대놓고 암시하는데, 가사 내용은 대충 2차대전을 배경으로 참전당해 죽느니 뒤질 때까지 약이나 빨고 섹스나 하지를 돌려서 말한 정도. How does the grass grow? 와 서사상 연결된다.

보위 특유의 디스코에 관한 해석이 기분 좋게 나오는 업템포의 곡인데, 그런 것 치고는 어째 vi 마이너 코드로 시작하는 것하며 가사 중간에 익사하는 듯이 우주에서 춤을 춘다는 내용이 암시하는 것이 아마 산소 없이 우주를 유영하거나 우주복 없이 던져진 끔살 확정(...)인 경우를 얘기하는 걸로 보이기에 Space Oddity의 유구한 계보를 잇는 우울 우주물 확정이다...

2차 대전 당시의 이미지들을 노골적으로 가사에 활용하여 전쟁에서 죽어간 젊은 병사들을 분노에 차 관조해 나가는 곡.
후렴구 가사의 구조(질문 - 답 3번 반복)은 풀 메탈 재킷의 대사에서 인용하였다.
'I gaze in defeat...' 로 시작하는 브릿지 부분은 The Shadows 의 <Apache> 에서 멜로디를 그대로 인용해 왔으며, 전후 전쟁에 대한 반성과 좌절적 분위기를 레퍼런스하는 데 멜로디를 그대로 갖다 쓰는 것만큼 좋은 게 없다고 판단했는지, 변형하지 않고 그대로 사용하게 되었다. 그로 인해 그렇지 않아도 침묵 속에 만들어진 이 앨범에서 보위의 밴드 멤버들을 제외하고 외부 인사로서는 유일하게 Shadows의 제리 로단이 공동 작곡가로 크레딧에 등재되었다. 문제는 제리 로단의 관계자들에게조차도 이 앨범은 당연히 비밀이었기 때문에, 그나마 첫 싱글인 Where Are We Now? 가 발매된 이후 빠르게 협의를 진행하여 사용허가를 받았다. 상황이 잘못 풀렸더라면 피지컬 앨범에서만 들을 수 있는 곡이 되었을지도.

밥 딜런과 동세대에 활동했던 여자 포크 뮤지션들의 이미지를 여럿 덧씌워 그들의 20대를 상상해 본 곡으로 알려져 있다. 앨범의 주요 기타리스트이자 보위의 오랜 친구인 얼 슬릭에게 "이 곡을 라이브로 하면 죽이겠는데." 라고 보위가 말했다가, "잊어버려, 그럴 일은 없을 거야." 라고 나중에 수정했다고.

[1] 추가 트랙들과 함께 2CD 발매된 The Next Day Extra는 동년 11월 4일 발매.[2] 2026년 출판된 Lazarus라는 책에서 세션들에게 처음 연락을 어떻게 했는지가 밝혀졌는데, 비스콘티가 "런던 출신의 데이빗 존스라는 재능 있고 젊은(?) 싱어송라이터가 있는데, 우리 그가 음반을 내도록 도와줄까요?" 라고 낄낄대며 전화했다고 한다. 다만 바로 보위가 전화를 들은 세션들에게 다시 전화하여 "지금 수락하거나, 아니면 아예 빠지는 거야. 그리고 비밀을 지켜줘야 해." 식으로 다소 딱 잘라서 얘기했다고. 보통 보위와의 음악 작업에는 농담과 웃음이 많았기 때문에 이런 모습은 세션들에게 처음이었다고 한다.[3] 소니뮤직 사장조차 보위가 사실상 은퇴한 줄 알았다가, 앨범이 완성단계에 있을 무렵 "나 신보 만들었는데 들으러 오쉴?" 이라고 연락이 오고서야 알아차렸다고 한다. 다만 사실 보위는 Heathen 때부터 소니 산하에 ISO 레코드라는 독립 음반사를 차리고 거기서 음반을 냈기 때문에, 사실상 소속가수인 동시에 자회사의 임원급이었어서 일정 압박을 받지 않은 지는 꽤 오래되었다.[4] 앨범의 프로듀서인 토니 비스콘티는 보위와 Space Oddity 시절부터 만났었기 때문에, 허마이오니에 대해 알고 있다. 허마이오니의 서면 인터뷰에 의하면 보위의 97년 Earthling 투어 도중 보위와 백스테이지에서 마주치고 잠시 해후한 것이 평생 보위를 본 마지막이었다고 언급한다.[5] Heathen 앨범의 A Better Future에서도 이러한 생각을 암시하는 가사들이 있다.[6] 보위가 립싱크를 하고 메인 연기를 하는 씬에서는 아예 기타가 총기를 상징적으로 대신하며, 몽타주 중 딱 한 샷에서 실제 총기를 든 씬이 흐릿하게 비친다.[7] 둘 다 Space Oddity의 히트 직전인 1969년에 일어난 일이다.[8] 말이 유감이지 '늙어 빠진 음험함만 남은 무신론자 락 음악가' 같은 원색적 비난도 존재했다. 물론 가톨릭 신자들 입장에서 성혈에 대해 신성모독을 운운하지 않고 저 정도 반응으로 끝났다는 것이 보위에 대한 나름대로의 유화적 태도로 보일 수도 있다. 일단 영국인이라 다른 교회의 소관이기도 하고...[9] 곡 앞에 재생되는 짧은 잼이 디럭스 버전에 실려있는 "Plan" 이다.[10] 노골적 묘사로 인해 전 세계 18금이 걸려있다.[11] 이 부분 전체가 2중창으로 이루어져 있는데, 처리된 부분을 뮤직비디오에서 젊은 가짜 일반인 보위와 진짜 보위의 2중창에 컨셉적으로 이용하였다.[12] 나체 묘사로 인해 전 세계 18금이 걸려 있다.[리믹스] DFA 리믹스 싱글 버전에서만 섹션이 넘어가기 전 이 가사가 분위기 전환을 위해 나온다.[14] DFA 리믹스 버전에서는 여기서 Ashes to Ashes의 인트로 리프가 등장한다.[rmxvox] 리믹스 버전에서만 나오는 백보컬. 싱글 버전, 풀 버전 공통.[rmxvox][rmxvox][rmxvox][rmxvox][rmxvox][21] 20/4 박으로, 가사에 따라 4박의 5마디 프레이즈와 5박의 4마디 프레이즈로 나뉜다.[22] 베를린의 지역명[23] 코러스와 함께 길게 끄는 음표.[24] 짧게 끊는 음표.[25] 이 구간 전체에 의 멜로디가 인용됨.[리믹스1] Love Is Lost: Hello Steve Reich Mix by James Murphy[리믹스2] I'd Rather Be High: Venetian Mix
