2026년에 개최되는 제6회 월드 베이스볼 클래식.

2. 개최 전 정보

2023년 대회가 본래 2017 월드 베이스볼 클래식 4년 후인 2021년에 개최될 예정이었던 대회를 코로나19의 여파로 6년이 지난 2023년에 개최한 것인 만큼, 6회 WBC는 메이저 리그 베이스볼 선수노조와의 합의로 기존의 4년 주기 개최에서 1년 앞당겨 2026년에 개최될 예정이다. 이로써 초대 대회인 2006 월드 베이스볼 클래식 이후 20년 만에 FIFA 월드컵, 하계 아시안 게임, 동계올림픽과 같은 해(2026년)에 개최되는 WBC가 되었다.
2023 시즌부터 MLB에 도입된 여러 규칙들[1]이 좋은 평가를 받고 있기에 이 규칙들이 2026 WBC부터 도입될 가능성이 높아졌다.
대회 개최 시기와 관련해서 여러 의견이 거론되었다. 2023 WBC에서 많은 메이저리거들이 참가했지만, 몇몇 투수들이 부상 위험 가능성을 두고 참가하기를 꺼려 끝내 불참 결정을 내리자 개최 시기를 시즌 중반 또는 포스트시즌이 끝나고 개최하자는 의견이 나왔다. 하지만 롭 맨프레드 MLB 커미셔너는 시즌이 끝난 뒤 개최하면 선수들의 시즌 종료 후 휴식 기간으로 인해 최상의 몸 상태가 아닐 것이라는 이유를 들며 2026 WBC도 이전 대회들처럼 3월에 개최하는 것으로 못박았다. #
현지 시간으로 2024년 5월 23일 개최 장소가 발표되었다. A조는 산후안 에스타디오 히람 비손, B조는 휴스턴 다이킨 파크, C조는 도쿄 도쿄 돔, D조는 마이애미 론디포 파크에서 개최되며 8강전은 다이킨 파크 & 론디포 파크, 4강과 결승은 론디포 파크에서 개최된다.
현지 시간으로 2024년 8월 21일, 조 편성이 발표되었다.

이번 예선에서는 기존의 더블 엘리미네이션 토너먼트 대신 조별리그가 처음으로 도입되었다. 2023 월드 베이스볼 클래식에서 본선 1라운드 조 5위를 기록했던 대만, 중국, 콜롬비아, 니카라과를 포함해 총 8개국이 예선에 참가한다. 결과적으로 예선 규모가 축소되면서 지난 대회 예선에 출전했던 프랑스, 아르헨티나, 파키스탄, 뉴질랜드 등이 참가하지 못했는데, ESPN의 보도에 따르면 # 향후 대륙별 대회를 통한 예선 재확대가 계획된 것으로 보인다.

A조는 대만이라는 빅마켓에 힘입어 역대 최다 관중 및 시청률을 기록했다. 대만대표가 경기를 치뤘던 네 경기 모두 최대수용 3만 5천명에 육박하는 타이베이돔을 만원으로 가득 채웠다. 단순 계산으로도, 예선전 A조의 총 관중 동원은 14만명을 상회했던 것이다. 대만과 스페인이 본선행 티켓을 두고 겨뤘던 단판 플레이오프전의 공식 하이라이트 영상은 24시간이 채 되지 않아 13만뷰를 돌파했고, 6회초 스페인의 연이은 실책으로 대만이 승부에 쐐기를 박았던 이닝 풀영상은 22만뷰를 돌파했다. # # 또한 예선 시작 전까지 9만명 정도의 구독자를 갖고 있던 WBC 공식 채널 역시, 예선 기간동안 3만명 가량 증가해 12만명을 넘어섰다. 유튜브 라이브 시청자 역시 상당히 많았는데, 3년 전 예선과 비교했을 때, 시청자 수가 상당히 증가하였다. 이런 열기를 본선까지 이어가는 것이 WBC 사무국 입장에서는 중요할 것이다.

디펜딩 챔피언 일본이 이번 대회에서도 우승한다면 연속 우승을, 즉 2009 월드 베이스볼 클래식에 이어 17년 만에 대회 2연패를 달성하게 된다.

체코의 영문 공식명이 Czech Republic에서 Czechia로 변경되었다. 체코 정부가 최근 들어 밀어주고 있는 명칭인 Czechia를 존중하는 차원에서 생긴 변경점으로 보인다. 주관 단체는 다르지만 이미 같은해에 치러진 2026 밀라노·코르티나담페초 동계올림픽에서도 역시 Czechia로 쓰였다.
