영국의 밴드 오아시스의 싱글, Wonderwall의 B사이드에 수록된 곡, 이후 B사이드 컴필레이션 앨범인 The Masterplan에 수록되었다. 이후 2016년 공개된 오아시스의 일대기를 다룬 영화인 슈퍼소닉(영화)에서 마지막 엔딩곡으로 쓰였다. 국내 팬들에겐 주로 마플로 불린다.

2. 특징

Wonderwall 싱글에 수록되어있는 B사이드이자, 1997년 발매되는 컴필레이션 앨범 The Masterplan의 마지막 트랙이다. B사이드이지만 A사이드인 Wonderwall에 비견될 정도로 높은 평가를 받으며, 노엘이 가장 좋아하는 오아시스 싱글이다.

3. 평가

오아시스가 이 곡만큼 좋은 곡들을 B사이드에 많이 넣고 싶은 마음은 절묘한 선택이자, 실수였다. 그 당시에는 노엘의 송라이팅 능력이 입을 다물지 못할만큼 대단해보였지만, 이런 곡들을 조금만 더 아껴서, Be Here Now에 수록하였다면, 3집은 지금과는 다르게 영국 음악의 야수이자, 시대를 대표하는 명반이 되었을 것이다.
더 가디언
오아시스를 대표하는 곡중 열 손가락 안에 들어가는 곡[1]이자, 노엘이 가장 좋아하는 곡 중 하나이다. 또한 90년대 당시 노엘의 송라이팅 능력의 절정을 보여주는 곡이다.

NME가 선정한 오아시스 최고의 명곡에서 A사이드인 Wonderwall보다 더 높은 순위[2]를 기록하였으며, 더 가디언에서 뽑은 오아시스 명곡 베스트 30에서 역시 원더월보다 더 높은 8위를 기록하였다.[3]

5. 탄생 비화

노엘은 Wonderwall 싱글에 들어갈 비사이드 곡 하나를 쓰기 위해 녹음을 진행했고, 이 노래가 탄생했는데 당시 오아시스 소속사인 크리에이션 레코드의 사장이었던 앨런 맥기가 이런 명곡이 묻히면 안 된다며, "B사이드 곡 대신 싱글로 빼자" 라고 제안했지만 노엘은 "당신이 비사이드 곡 쓰라고 녹음 잡아놨잖아? 그래서 비사이드 썼는데 뭐 어쩌라고?"라며 우긴 끝에 결국 비사이드 곡으로 들어가게 된 것이다.[4] 그리고 A사이드 곡인 원더월도 B사이드로 빠질 뻔 했다

이렇게 결국 이 대곡은 B사이드로 빠지게 되었다. 하지만 이후 노엘도 이를 후회하는지, 이 곡을 싱글로 내지 않은 걸 아쉬워하는 듯 하다.

여담으로 리암은 이 곡이 무슨 뜻인지 전혀 모르겠으나 어쨌든 훌륭한 곡(...)이라고 말하였다.

6. 여담

[1] 이 후에 오아시스를 다룬 영화 슈퍼소닉의 엔딩곡으로 쓰일만큼 오아시스를 대표하는 곡이다.[2] Wonderwall은 16위를 차지한데 반해, 마플은 무려 9위에 랭크되었다[3] Wonderwall은 11위를 기록하였다.[4] 노엘의 말에 따르면, 노엘이 이 곡을 들려주자 앨런 맥기가 "B사이드 곡 써오랬잖아." 노엘이 "이게 그건데요"라고 하자, 맥기가 "하지만 이건 너무 좋은데."라고 했다고 한다. 아마 너무 좋았기 때문에 싱글로 내기를 바랐겠지만 노엘은 "저는 X같은 곡은 안쓰는데요?" 라고 했다고 한다(...).[5] I'd like to be under the sea, In an octopus' garden in the shade[6] 해당 곡은 'Whatever' 라이브 후렴구에도 노엘이 자주 부르는 곡이다
