1. 개요

중국 후난성의 최대 도시이자 성도. 인구는 2016년 기준 731만 명이다. 시가지는 장강의 지류인 샹장 (상강)의 양안에 형성되어 있으며, 주변의 크고 작은 산들로 둘러싸여 있다. 이곳을 지난 샹장은 북쪽 40km 지점에서 장강과 합류하고, 따라서 창사는 하항 (河港)이자 상공업 도시이다. 중국의 제 2대 국가주석 류사오치와 장이씽이 이 지역 출신이다. 공산당의 창사 폭동이 일어난 곳이고, 마오쩌둥의 고향인 소산(韶山, 샤오산)이 비교적 가까운 위치에 있기 때문에 홍색관광지가 많아서 경유하는 관광객들도 많다. 삼국지의 형주 장사군이었고, 유비가 황충과 위연을 얻은 곳으로 유명하다.

2. 역사

14세기에 세워진 이래로 창사의 상징이던 천심각 (天心閣)과 성벽. 현 누각은 중일전쟁 당시 파괴된 후 1984년 복원된 것이다.

중간에 담주라고 한번 이름이 바뀌긴 했지만, 고대 (춘추전국시대)의 이름이 현대까지 계속 내려오는 몇 안되는 중국 도시이다. 본래 원래는 묘족의 땅이었고, 춘추전국시대에는 초나라 땅이었다. 진나라가 초나라를 멸하고서, 군국제를 실시하면서 초나라의 강남 지역을 떼어내 장사군을 세웠다. 이것이 지명으로서 장사의 기원이다. 이후 한나라에서 장사국(長沙國)을 제후국으로 두었으며 왕이 있었고 제후가 따로 있었다. 기원전 202년부터 장사국의 왕의 국성은 오예(吳芮)로부터 시작해 오씨(吳氏)가 이어갔고, 후작은 대후(軑候)라고 칭했고 장사국 승상으로 이창(利蒼)으로부터 이씨(利氏)가 이어갔다. 오씨는 기원전 155년 세(世)가 단절되어 정왕(定王) 유발(劉發)이 가 봉작을 이어갔으나, 후작 이씨는 기원전 110년 4대째 이희(利豨)가 죄를지어 봉작이 폐지되었다.이후 영릉군과 계양군을 분할하고,또 장사군을 계속 분할하여 장사군의 직할지는 계속 축소되었다. 장사군은 둥팅 호 이남 지역에서 가장 큰 고을이었고, 이 지역에 설치되는 상주 등 군의 상급 기관의 관청 소재지(치소)가 있었다.

삼국지에서는 형주 남부(형남) 4군(영릉, 무릉, 계양, 장사) 중 하나로, 은근히 주인이 자주 바뀐 흥망성쇠를 가진 성이다. 황건적의 난이 발생하던 시기에는 손견이 다스리고 있었고 손견이 황조에 의해 암살당한 후에는 장선 등의 태수들을 거쳤고, 이어 한현이 다스렸다가 한현이 유비에게 항복한 이후에는 촉한의 땅이였다가 익양대치로 인하여 오나라의 땅이 되었다. 어떻게 보면 옛 주인을 다시 찾아간 셈이다. 어쨌든 삼국지연의만 봐도 손견, 황충, 위연 [2] 등 굵직한 무장들이 여기를 근거로 활약했다.

수나라에서 군을 폐하고 주로 대신하면서는 담주(潭州)를 설치하고 장사현 · 익양현 · 형산현 · 소양현 등을 두었다. 담성(潭城)이라고 부르다가 명나라 홍무제 시절 담주부를 장사부로 개칭하면서 "장사"라는 이름을 회복했다.

이후 750~1100년까지 장사는 중요한 상업 도시로 인구가 크게 증가했다. 또한 몽송전쟁 시기에는 몽골군과 남송군의 격전지이기도 했다. 상사벽이 이끄는 군대가 이곳에서 우량카다이가 이끄는 몽골군[3]을 악전고투 끝에 막아내지만, 이후 1276년 이불이 이끄는 군사들이 아릭카야가 이끄는 원나라의 군사들과 맞서 싸우다 중과부적으로 인해 이불은 자결하고, 성은 함락당하고 만다. 청 왕조 하에 1664년부터 후난성의 성도이자 주요한 미곡 시장이었다. 도시는 1852년 태평천국 운동 때 포위당했으나 후난성 출신 의병들의 활약으로 함락되지 않았다.

2.1. 근현대

현대 시가지 모습

나중에 중화인민공화국을 세우는 마오쩌둥이 처음으로 봉기한 장소이기도 하다. 1927년 9월 마오쩌둥은 추수폭동을 기획했다가 참패하고 후난성 남부의 징강산에 들어가 게릴라전을 폈다. 마찬가지로 펑더화이도 1931년에 창사 폭동으로 창사를 일시적으로 점령하지만 이후 국민당군에게 참패하고 물러난다.

1937년부터 1945년까지의 중일전쟁의 주요 전장으로 잠시 일본군에 점령되기도 했다. 1938년 10월 우한을 점령한 일본군이 서진하자 장제스는 일본군에게 밀릴 경우 창사 시내의 모든 건물을 파괴하여 적에게 넘겨주지 말 것을 지시하였다. 이는 11월 중순에 시행되어 천심각을 포함한 유서깊은 건물들 전부가 중국군의 손에 전소되었다. 국공내전때 이곳을 지배하던 국민당 군벌들은 대세가 공산군에게 기울자 모두 동향인 마오쩌둥에게 투항했고, 공산군은 1949년 5월 창사시에 무혈입성했다. 1949년 이래로 재건되어 도시는 현재 주요한 항구이자 상업 공업 중심지이다. 지금은 창사 시의 메이시(Meixi) 호수를 주변으로 신도시 건설이 활발히 진행되는 등, 빠르게 발전하고 있다.

창사는 화남 내륙 지방에서 우한 다음으로 잘 살고, 중화권 내에서 11위를 기록하는 도시이다. 1949년 이후 80년대 초까지 3배로 증가한 인구에 농업, 직물업, 축산업, 가공업, 유통업 등을 기반으로 70년대부터 산업 도시로 지정되면서 중공업, 기계 제조업이 발달하였다.

개혁개방 이후 우한 ~ 광저우간 철도 거점이자 샹강의 내륙 항구로써 창사는 더욱 발전했다. 특히 시멘트 등 건축 자재 생산 거점으로 세계적인 명성을 떨쳤다. 창사의 명목 개인 GDP는 2008년 기준으로 6,000 달러, 2021년 20,000 달러를 넘겼고, 2030년까지 40,000 달러를 돌파할 것으로 예상된다. 연봉 수준도 베이징, 상하이에 크게 뒤쳐지지 않는 등 후난성 경제를 이끌고 있다.

창사는 화남 지방에서 가장 힙한 도시 중 하나로 떠오르고 있다. 차오종 거리(潮宗街)는 역사적인 건물과 힙한 상점들이 어우러져 독특한 분위기를 자아내며, 로컬 왕홍들의 활동 무대가 되고 있다. 그 중 일부는 모모뎬신쥐(墨茉点心局)나 차옌위에써(茶颜悦色) 같은 힙한 식문화/패션 브랜드를 런칭해 중국 전역으로 확장시키고 있다. 특히 세계적인 패션 브랜드 메종 마르지엘라가 5번째 글로벌 '카페'[4] 매장의 위치로 창사 IFS 타워를 선택했다는 사실은 이 도시의 위상이 달라졌음을 보여주는 상징적인 사건이다.

마윈산(马栏山) 일대는 중국의 '비디오 밸리'로 불리며 후난위성TV [5]의 후난 방송영상 그룹을 비롯한 수많은 미디어 기업과 스튜디오, 스타트업이 모여있는 미디어 산업 허브이다.

창사는 중국 8대 요리인 후난 요리의 본산으로 꼽히며, 미식 문화가 발달한 도시이다. 2004년 오픈한 시후루(西湖楼)는 무려 6천여명을 수용할 수 있는 고궁 형식의 고급 후난 요리 식당으로, 그저 하나의 식당을 떠나 일부러 이곳을 위해 창사까지 오는 사람이 있을 정도로 명실상부 창사 내 최대 관광지 중 하나이다. 방문기 3개의 건물이 있고, 그 사이에는 중국 전통 정원이 꾸며져 있다. 가격대는 요리 하나당 평균 만원. 개업 당시 세계 최대 규모 식당으로 기네스북에 올랐다.

창사의 특산물 중 가장 유명한 것은 바로 취두부인데, 다른 곳의 취두부와 달리 검은 색을 띠고 냄새 또한 전국의 취두부 중 가장 자극적인 식물성 발효취가 난다. 마오쩌둥도 먹고 갔다는 일화로 유명하다. 창사에서는 취두부를 반드시 튀겨서 조리하며, 튀긴 취두부 속에는 후난 요리 특유의 매콤하고 짭짤한 양념을 넣어 마무리한다. 창사에서는 길거리 노점이 튀긴 취두부를 파는 광경을 자주 볼 수 있다.

6. 관광

상강에 귤자주라는 하중도가 있으며 5급 여유경구로 지정되어 있다. 청년 마오 석상이 유명하다. 2009년 완공되었으며 상술한 것처럼 창사는 마오쩌둥이 처음 봉기한 지역으로 중국 공산당역사에서는 의미깊은 곳이다.

공항은 창사 황화 국제공항이 있으며, 인천국제공항에서 대한항공, 아시아나항공, 중국동방항공, 중국남방항공이 인천 ↔ 창사 직항을 운항 중이다. 수도권에서 장가계로 갈 때는 창사에 내려서 이동하거나 김해국제공항으로 이동하여 에어부산 직항편을 이용한다.
