압하스인은 미승인국 압하지야의 주요민족이다. 압하스 12만여 명 정도가 거주하는 것으로 추정되며. 외에도 러시아 내 1만여 명 이상, 압하스 외 조지아 영토에는 3천여 명이 거주하고 있다. 튀르키예에도 압하스인들이 상당수 거주하고 있는데 압하스계 조상을 둔 튀르키예계는 16만여 명 정도에 달한다고 한다. 압하스인은 압하스어가 모어이지만 소련 시절의 영향으로 대부분 러시아어를 일정 수준 이상 구사한다.

압하스는 이들의 언어로 '필멸자'란 뜻이다. 압하지야의 현지 명칭인 아프스느(Аԥсны) 역시 직역하면 '필멸자들의 땅'이 된다.

압하스 지역은 고대 흑해에 식민지를 건설했던 그리스인들과 교류가 많았던 이유로 역사 기록이 이른 시기부터 많이 남아있는 편이었다. 고대 그리스인들은 압하스 지역의 여러 부족들이 해적질을 좋아하고 매우 호전적이라는 기록을 남겼으며 주로 그리스계 식민 도시 디오스쿠라이스와 교역이 많았다고 한다. 로마 제국 시대 서기 2세기에는 이 지역 원주민들을 아바스고이(Abasgoi)라는 이름으로 칭해졌으며, 이후 동로마의 역사가 프로코피우스는 이들이 상당히 호전적이며 고대 라지카 왕국에서 믿던 다신교와 흡사한 토속 신앙을 믿었다는 기록이 남아있다. 로마 제국 시기 이후 동로마 제국은 6세기 라지카 전쟁을 통해 라지카 왕국을 점령하고 군사 기지로 수후미(당시 이름은 세바스토폴리스)을 건설했다. 조지아계 콜키스 왕국과 그리스계 폰토스 왕국, 라지크 왕국과 동로마 제국 시기를 거치며 중세에는 압하스 왕국이 독립했다.

778년부터 1008년까지 번영하던 압하스 왕국은 조지아 왕국에 병합된 이후, 16세기 말부터 오스만 제국의 지배를 받다가 1870년대에는 러시아 제국의 영토가 되었다. 오스만 제국과 러시아 제국 사이의 전쟁 와중에 압하스계 무슬림 상당수는 오스만 제국으로 피난했고, 이 중 상당수는 시리아에 정착했다.[1] 오늘날 시리아에도 압하스계 조상을 둔 주민들이 수천여 명 이상 거주하는 것으로 확인되었다. 러시아 제국, 소련을 거치면서 압하스는 조지아의 영토가 되었지만, 소련 붕괴 이후 압하스인들은 조지아에서의 분리 독립을 요구하고, 조지아인들은 이에 반대하면서 충돌이 커졌다.

1991년 조지아가 독립을 선언한 이후 1992년 7월 23일 압하지야 최고회의의 결정에 따라 압하지야는 조지아로부터 독립하겠다고 나섰다. 결국 압하지야 전쟁이 발발하였으며, 이 과정에서 수만 명의 사망자가 발생했고, 20만 명의 조지아인이 압하지야에서 쫓겨났다. 1994년 5월 14일에 러시아의 중재로 모스크바에서 준군사조직(므헤드리오니)의 지도자인 자바 이오셀리아니(ჯაბა იოსელიანი)와 압하지야의 총리인 소크라트 진졸리야(Сократ Рачевич Джинджолия)가 만나 휴전협정을 성사시키면서 내전은 일단락되었고 압하지야는 사실상 독립 상태가 되었다. 이후에도 압하지야와 조지아의 충돌은 몇 번 계속되었으며, 2008년 남오세티야 전쟁 이후엔 사실상 독립국이 되었다. 압하지야가 미승인국 특성상 러시아 외에 다른 국가와는 교역이 어려운 관계로 압하스인 대다수가 경제 사정이 상당히 좋지 않다.

우비흐인도 압하스인들과 가까웠지만, 압하스인들과 달리 이슬람교를 믿었고 19세기에 러시아 제국이 캅카스를 지배하면서 대부분의 우비흐인들이 오스만 제국으로 이주했고 압하스어와 가까웠던 우비흐어는 90년대초에 마지막 화자가 사망하면서 사멸했다.
