1. 개요


랩 그룹 더 슈가힐 갱(The Sugarhill Gang)이 1979년 9월 16일[2] 발표한 싱글. 힙합의 본고장인 뉴욕을 넘어 라디오를 타고 전미에서 최초로 흥행하는 데 성공한 힙합 싱글이다.

2. 상세

사실 이 노래 이전에 랩을 담은 곡으로 팻백 밴드(Fatback Band)의 'King Tim III (Personality Jock)'이 있었고[3]R&B 차트에서도 괜찮은 성적을 거뒀지만, Rapper's Delight는 이 곡보다도 미국 빌보드 핫 100에서 36위, 유럽 여러 나라의 차트에서 5위권에 들 정도로 초대박을 치는 바람에[4] 최초의 힙합 싱글을 언급할 때 자주 치이는 편이다.[5] 뉴욕 브롱스에서나 성행하던 서브컬처인 힙합을 양지로 끌어올려 전세계적인 문화로 자리매김하는 데 결정적인 역할을 한 곡이다. Sugarhill Gang앨범에 수록되었다. 디스코 밴드 Chic의 곡 Good Times에 있는 베이스라인을 샘플링하였다.[6][7] 롤링 스톤 선정 500대 명곡에서 251위에 랭크되었다.

정작 당대의 뉴욕의 힙합 커뮤니티는 이 곡의 히트를 영 못마땅하게 여겼는데, 그럴 만한게 슈가힐 갱은 힙합 문화와는 일면식도 없는 사람들로 구성된 그룹이었고, 라임조차도 다른 MC가 쓴 것을 도용했기 때문이었다. 특히 뉴욕 내에서 가장 명성 있던 MC Cold Crush의 라임을 그대로 가져다 카피했다.

맥 밀러의 곡 The Best Day Ever의 뮤직비디오에 이 곡을 부르는 어린 시절의 맥 밀러의 비디오가 나온다.

[1] 힙합이 2021년 개정판에서 취급이 좋아졌는데도 이 곡은 순위가 크게 하락하여 기준이 일관되지 못하다는 비판의 목소리가 있었다.[2] 녹음은 1979년 8월 2일.[3] 이 곡이 나오기 몇 달 전인 3월 25일에 발매되었다.[4] 네덜란드에서는 1위를 차지했다![5] 이외에도 팩뱃 밴드가 힙합 그룹이 아닌 디스코, 펑크(Funk) 밴드인 까닭도 있다.[6] 말하자면 이건 무단 샘플링이었다. 슈가 힐 갱이 시크와 블론디의 합동 공연에 초대되었는 데, 시크가 연주한 Good Times에 꽂혀 이 곡의 반주를 허락도 안받고 그대로 넣었다가(다른 힙합 곡처럼 음원을 그대로 샘플링한 부분이 있지만 대부분은 녹음에 참여한 세션맨이 그대로 따라 연주한 것이다.) 시크의 멤버이자 Good Times의 작곡가 나일 로저스와 버나드 에드워즈에게 고소를 당했다. 다행히도 원만하게 합의를 하여 이 두명의 이름도 크레딧에 올렸다. 참고로 블론디도 나중에 Good Times와 Rapper's Delight의 영향을 받아 강조된 베이스라인과 랩을 담은 디스코 곡인 Rapture를 발표하여 빌보드 핫 100 1위에 올랐다.(참고로 이건 힙합 역사 상 처음 있는 일이었다.)[7] 현재는 나일 로저스도 이 곡을 높게 평가하고 있는데다 슈거힐 갱과 공연을 함께 하기도 했다. 2023년에는 Tiny Desk에 나와서 아예 나일 로저스 혼자서 Rapper's Delight의 벌스를 그대로 따라 불렀을 정도.[8] 상업적으로 판매된 음반 중 이 자리에서 '힙합'이란 단어가 최초로 언급되었다는 소리가 있는데 사실이 아니며, 이 곡보다 16년 앞선 1963년에 미국의 두왑 보컬 그룹 "The Dovells"가 발표한 싱글 "You Can't Sit Down"에서 제일 먼저 쓰였다. 이 곡은 당시 빌보드 핫 100 3위까지 올랐었다.
