대체로 평이 좋다. 다큐멘터리임에도 불구하고 전혀 지루하지 않으며, 실제로 본능의 질주를 보고 포뮬러 1에 입문한 사람들이 적지 않다. 또한 노후화되던 팬덤이 넷플릭스를 보는 젊은 층들이 유입되어 F1 생태계 자체가 젊어진 데에 큰 기여를 했다.
다만 시즌 2는 시즌 1보다 평이 좋지 않은데, 그 이유는 시즌 1의 경우 드라이버나 팀 감독들을 중심으로 경쟁심, 좌절, 성취감 등등의 감정에 고루 공감할 수 있었고 하스, 자우버, 윌리엄스도 일부 다룬 반면, 시즌 2는 주로 팀을 중심으로 나오기 때문에 이러한 부분이 조금 결여되어 있을 뿐더러 중하위권 팀들을 주로 다루지 않아 다소 아쉽다는 평도 있다. 그러나 2개 시즌 모두 속도감이나 경쟁 등을 잘 나타내고 있어 스포츠나 레이싱 등의 장르를 즐기는 사람이라면 강력히 추천하는 다큐멘터리이다. 시즌 2 이후에는 알파로메오, 애스턴 마틴, 윌리엄스의 존재감이 완전히 증발해버려서 마치 7개팀만 있는 느낌이다.
3.1. 악마의 편집 논란
위의 영상처럼 장면과 해설이나 팀 라디오의 음성이 실제 경기와 일치하지 않는 경우가 많다. 어쩌다 한두 번이 아니라 이런 편집이 태반이다. 장면과는 별도의 팀 라디오 음성을 입혀 분쟁이 있는 것처럼 편집하는가 하면, 해설도 다른 장면의 코멘트를 끌어다 쓰곤 한다. 레이스 장면들 역시 짜깁기하여 실제 경기 진행과 다르게 편집해버리곤 하며, 그냥 정상적으로 타이어 교체를 위해 피트스탑하여 잠시 순위가 쳐진 상황도 선수가 크게 뒤쳐져 위기가 발생된 것처럼 연출한다. 또는 뒷차에게 추월당하는 순간 서로 접촉이 일어난 장면도 심각한 갈등이 일어난 것으로 과장해서 억지로 스토리를 만든다. 일반 운전자도 누가 나를 추월하려다 접촉 사고를 내면 험한 말이 나오기 마련인데, F1과 같은 극한의 상황에서 욕이 나오는 건 당연한 것이다. 그러나 이러한 연출 때문에 F1 초심자들이나 당시 상황을 모르는 사람들은 오해하기 쉽다. F1 공식 유튜브 영상들의 댓글을 내리다 보면 이런 점 때문에 넷플릭스를 비난하는 글을 쉽게 찾아볼 수 있다. 막스 베르스타펜은 조작으로 만들어진 다큐멘터리라고 비난하며 한때 인터뷰에도 응하지 않았다.
선수들의 감정 등을 연출하는 과정에서도 앞뒤 사연은 다 잘라먹고 특정 선수를 주인공화 내지는 빌런화하기도 하며, 카를로스 사인츠 주니어와 랜도 노리스의 사이가 굉장히 나빠진 것처럼 연출하는 등 여러 가지 조작으로 인해 해외에서 여러모로 욕을 얻어먹고 있다. 사인츠와 노리스는 맥라렌 팀메이트 2년간 절친으로 지내며 항상 서로 놀리면서 티격태격하는 게 일상이었다. 즉, 사이가 매우 좋아서 장난치며 논 상황인데, 이걸 레이스 후 둘이 사이가 안 좋아진 상황으로 연출해놨다.
3.2. 레이스 내용의 왜곡
다큐멘터리 내지는 다큐드라마를 표방함에도 불구하고 본능의 질주에서 레이스의 내용이 왜곡되는 경우가 적지 않다. 예를 들면, 시즌 3 6화의 이탈리아 그랑프리에서는 마그누센의 리타이어에서 시작되는 일련의 서사를 순서를 제멋대로 조작하는 바람에 개연성이 전혀 들어맞지 않는 전개가 진행된다.[3] 시즌 6 10화의 아부다비 그랑프리에서도 세르히오 페레스, 샤를 르클레르, 조지 러셀과 관련된 상황을 실제와 전혀 다르게 편집하였다.[4] 그럼에도 이들 경기는 선수들의 서사나, 경기 중간 내용을 자의적으로 편집했을지언정 최소한 경기 결과를 바꾸지는 않았었다.그러나, 2024 시즌을 다루는 시즌 7에서 기어코 사고를 치고야 말았다. 시즌 7의 3화에서는 러셀이 자신의 능력을 증명하는 모습을 담기 위해 벨기에 그랑프리에서 가장 먼저 피니시 라인을 통과하는 모습을 담아 러셀이 벨기에를 우승한 것으로 러셀의 파트가 끝난다. 문제는, 이 경기에서 러셀은 최소중량 미달로 실격처리 되었다는 것. 그러나, 이 에피소드에서 러셀이 실격당했다는 사실은 조금의 언급조차 없이 넘어간다.
경기의 결과를, 그것도 우승자를 바꾸는 것은 이전의 것들과는 차원이 다른 문제다.[5] 해당 러셀의 실격은 F1에서 30년만의 1위 드라이버가 실격당한 것이기에 파장이 컸던 사건이다.[6] 더구나, 오히려 러셀이 이후 후반기에 반등하였으며 라스베이거스에서는 퀄리파잉과 레이스에서 압도적인 퍼포먼스를 보여 우승을 차지하고, 해밀턴보다 높은 순위로 시즌을 마감하였기에 시즌 전체의 서사에서 스파-프랑코샹에서의 실격을 다루고도 오히려 더 극적인 연출은 얼마든지 가능하였다. 왜곡 없이도 충분히 제작진이 원하는 방향의 서사가 가능했기에 더욱 제작진의 역량이나 윤리 의식에 비판점이 남는다.
[1] 매 시즌 10개의 에피소드로 구성[2] 영어식 이름 표기가 Valtteri Bottas 임으로 통상적으로 '보'라고 읽고 쓰지만 어째서인지 '포'라고 적혀 있다. 아마 오타로 보인다.[3] 실제 당시의 상황은 (1) 마그누센이 피트레인 입구 근처에서 차를 멈췄고 - (2) 이로 인한 옐로 플래그 상황에서 세이프티카가 나오지 않을거라 판단한 알파타우리 팀의 지시로 가슬리가 피트 스탑을 하였으며 - (3) 가슬리가 피트를 나설 때 하필 세이프티카가 발동되었고 - (4) 마그누센의 차량을 이동시키기 위해 피트 레인 출입이 금지되었다. - (5) 이 때, 피트레인 폐쇄 시그널을 못 본 해밀턴이 문제의 피트인을 진행해 추후 10초 스탑 앤 고 페널티를 받게 되며 - (6) 세이프티카가 2바퀴를 돌고 나서야 피트스탑이 허용되어 대부분의 드라이버가 피트인해 가슬리가 3위로 올라섰다. - (7) 세이프티카가 해제되고 직후의 바퀴에서 르클레르가 파라볼리카에서 사고를 내며 레드플레그가 발동되었고 - (8) 이로 인해 모든 드라이버가 새 타이어를 끼게되어 스트롤, 가슬리 등이 크게 이득을 본 반면, 레드플래그가 너무 일찍 나와 해밀턴이 패널티를 수행 못한 채 리스타트가 진행되었다. - (9) 가슬리가 리스타트 후 스트롤을 추월하고, 해밀턴은 패널티 수행을 위해 피트인 하면서 가슬리가 선두가 되었고, 이를 유지하며 우승하게 된디. 이 과정은 F1 공식 유튜브 INSIDE STORY 영상에 자세히 나온다. 가슬리의 입장에선 세이프티카가 발동될 때만해도 그야말로 망한 줄 알았던 피트스탑이 알고보니 일생일대의 천운이었던 경기로, 2020년 페레스의 사키르 우승과 함께 가장 극적인 스토리로 꼽을 수 있다. 그러나, 본능의 질주 제작진은 르클레르의 사고 - 갑작스런 피트스탑 제한 - 해밀턴 피트인 - 이후 레드플래그라는 개연성 없는 난해한 배열로 만들어버렸다. 이 와중에 세이프티카가 발동되어 낙담하는 피에르 아믈랭과 가슬리의 팀 라디오 장면을 전혀 다른 경기의 아믈랭이 가슬리를 격려하는 팀 라디오로 더빙한 건 덤.[4] 실제 레이스에서 세르히오 페레스는 이미 54랩에서 러셀을 추월하였다. 페라리가 컨스트럭터 2위를 차지하기 위해서는 르클레르가 2위, 러셀이 4위를 차지하여야 했고, 페레스가 노리스와의 충돌로 5초 패널티가 있어 3위로 달리는 페레스가 이대로 레이스를 마치면 러셀이 3위, 페레스가 4위인 상황이었다. 때문에 르클레르는 일부러 페레스가 러셀과 5초 이상 간격을 만들도록 속도를 늦추어 페레스와 간격을 좁힌 뒤 슬립스트림을 주었으며, 마지막 랩에서는 DRS 디텍션 존에서 페레스에게 고의로 자리를 내주어 페레스가 DRS를 키고 클린에어를 질주하는 반면 자신은 러셀을 마킹하는 전략을 펼쳤다. 결과적으로는 페레스와 러셀의 차이가 3.9초로 5초에 모자라 러셀이 3위를 차지하였다. 그러나, 본능의 질주 제작진은 이러한 르클레르의 헌신적인 서사는 다 쳐내고 페레스가 추월을 하지 못해 4위를 기록했다는 코멘터리와 르클레르가 2위로 마무리했다는 코멘터리를 각각 다른 경기에서 가져다 입혔다.[5] 물론, 이 경기에서 러셀이 1위로 피니시라인을 통과한 건 맞으며, 많은 F1 팬들에게 오랜만에 러셀이 자신의 능력을 증명한 경기로 꼽히기에 에피소드 전체의 플롯이 왜곡이 심한 것은 아니다. 그러나, 이러한 전후 상황은 별론으로 하고, 결과적으로 조지 러셀은 이후 중량미달로 실격되었으며 이는 F1에서는 어디까지나 심각한 규칙위반이므로 경시할 수 없다. 중량 미달의 원인으로 타이어 소모가 심했던 것과 쿨다운 랩이 없는 스파의 특징 때문에 타이어 조각을 묻히지 못한 것이 꼽히므로 러셀이 레이스를 잘 한 것을 평가절하하기엔 다소 억울함이 있음을 참작할 수 있지만, 이것이 레이스에서 실격된 것이나 본능의 질주 제작진이 레이스 결과를 왜곡한 것에 대해 면죄부로 작용할 수는 없다.[6] 뿐만 아니라 하필이면 이 경기가 전반기 마지막 경기였던지라, 여름 브레이크 동안 계속 회자되었다 보니 시즌 전체를 본 팬들에게는 더더욱 기억에 남는 사건일 수 밖에 없다.
