1. 개요

전북특별자치도 무주군 설천면 두길리 구천동계곡에 위치한 절벽. 일소대와 그 주변 일대는 대한민국의 명승 (구)제55호로 지정되어 있다.

2. 상세

구천동에서도 3대 경승지의 하나로 손꼽히고 수성대(水城臺)라고도 하는데 나제통문에서 6.1㎞ 지점에 위치한다.
이곳은 서벽정 서쪽에 우뚝 솟은 기암이 배의 돛대 모양을 한 절경으로 구한말의 송병선(宋秉璿)이 이곳에 은거하여 서벽정을 지어 호를 동방일사(東方一士)라 하고 푸른 바위의 깨끗하며 의젓함을 들어 ‘일사대’라 이름 지었다고 한다.

일사대는 무주 구천동의 33경 중 6경에 해당한다.
일명 수성대(水城臺)라고도 부르는 일사대는 3대 경승지의 하나로 손꼽히는 명승지이다.
이곳은 고종 때의 위정척사 운동을 한 송병선이 아름다운 경치에 반해 숨어 살면서 서벽정이라는 정자를 짓고 후진을 양성하며 지내던 곳이기도 하다.
이 고장 선비들은 송병선을 동방에 하나밖에 없는 선비라 하여 동방일사(東方一士)라 불렀는데 바로 여기에서 일사대라는 지명이 유래한다.
일사대는 덕유산에서 흘러내린 계곡 물줄기가 굽어 흐르는 원당천(무풍면과 설천면의 일대를 흐르다가 남대천으로 합류하는 하천)의 침식 작용으로 발달한 절벽이다. 소나무와 단풍이 어우러진 이곳의 경치는 무척이나 아름답다.

고종 때의 학자 연재(淵齊) 송병선이 이곳의 아름다운 경치에 반해 은거하여 서벽정(棲碧亭)이라는 정자를 짓고 후진을 양성하며 소요하던 곳으로, 이 고장 선비들이 송병선을 동방에 하나밖에 없는 선비라는 뜻의 동방일사(東方一士)라 한데서 비롯되었으며, 푸른 바위의 깨끗하고 의젓함을 들어 일사대(一士臺)라 이름 지었다고 한다.
