가운뎃점(가운뎃點) 또는 중점(中點)은 가운데 위치에 찍는 기호이다. 한국어에서는 문장 부호의 하나로 쓰인다. 영어로는 'middle point'라고 한다.

유니코드에서 가운뎃점은 U+00B7에 MIDDLE DOT이라는 이름으로 배당되어 있다. 일본어의 나카구로, 수학 내적 기호를 제외하고서는 대부분 이 가운뎃점을 쓴다.

2. 한국어에서 사용

2.1. 개정 전

한글 맞춤법 개정 전 가운뎃점은 다음과 같은 경우에 쓰인다.

쉼표로 열거된 어구가 다시 여러 단위로 나누어질 때 쓴다.

철수·영희, 영수·순이가 서로 짝이 되어 윷놀이하였다.
공주·논산, 천안·아산·천원 등 각 지역구에서 2명씩 국회 의원을 뽑는다.
시장에 가서 사과·배·복숭아, 고추·마늘·파, 조기·명태·고등어를 샀다.

특정한 의미가 있는 날을 나타내는 숫자에 쓴다.

3·1 운동, 8·15 광복

같은 계열의 단어 사이에 쓴다.

경북 방언의 조사·연구
충북·충남 두 도(道)를 합하여 충청도라고 한다.
동사·형용사를 합하여 용언이라고 한다.

그러나 두벌식 자판으로 쉽게 입력할 수 없는 문제점이 있고 이 때문에 1과 3은 반점(,)으로 대체되는 일이 많았으며 영어식 문장부호인 슬래시(/)나 하이픈(-)으로 대체하여 쓰기도 한다. 2는 마침표(.)로 대체하는 일이 많았다. 실제로 나무위키의 문서명에도 3.1 운동, 8.15 광복과 같이 '·'가 아닌 '.'을 썼다.[1] \'`'나 \'{}' 같이 가운뎃점보다 훨씬 덜 중요한 문장 부호가 두벌식 자판에서 가운뎃점보다 우선해서 자리를 배치받은 것은 두벌식 자판이 쿼티의 문자 배열을 수정 없이 한글 자모만 영문자 자리에 추가하여 쓰기 때문이다. 경로의존성과 유관한 문제이기도 하다.

그럼에도 문자표나 'ㄱ'+한자(키보드의 '한자' 키)로 입력할 수 있어서 천만 낱자 가운데에서 빈도수가 약 7,400개였고, 두벌식 자판에 없는 기호 중 가장 많이 쓰였다는 통계가 있다(#).

2.2. 개정 후

문화체육관광부와 국립국어원은 2014년 10월 27일 한국맞춤법 일부 개정안을 아래와 같이 고시하였다.

열거할 어구들을 일정한 기준으로 묶어서 나타낼 때 쓴다.

민수·영희, 선미·준호가 서로 짝이 되어 윷놀이하였다.
지금의 경상북도·경상남도, 전라남도·전라북도, 충청남도·충청북도 지역을 예부터 삼남이라 일러 왔다.

짝을 이루는 어구들 사이에 쓴다. 다만, 이때는 가운뎃점을 쓰지 않거나 쉼표를 쓸 수도 있다.

가운뎃점의 띄어쓰기: 가운뎃점은 앞말과 뒷말에 붙여 쓴다.

이전과 비교하면 그 동안 관용적으로 쉼표를 사용한 부분을 명시했음을 알 수 있다.

또한 특정한 의미가 있는 날을 나타내는 숫자에 가운뎃점이 아닌 마침표를 사용하는 것이 원칙이 되었고 가운뎃점은 허용으로 바뀌어 3.1 운동, 8.15 광복과 같은 표기가 더는 맞춤법 위반이 아니게 되었다.

이 개정으로 가운뎃점의 사용 빈도가 이전보다 많이 줄어들었고, 컴퓨터 문서로 가운뎃점을 입력하는 빈도 역시 줄어들었다.

2.3. 유니코드 문제

유니코드 상에서는 비슷하게 생겼는데 다른 부호들이 많다. '가운뎃점' ·(U+00B7) '한글 모음 아래아'ㆍ(U+318D), '한글 중성 아래아'ᆞ(U+119E), '하이픈점' ‧ (U+2027)[2] 등 아무리 비슷하게 생긴 기호라도 다른 문자로 되어 있다.[3] 불릿 • (U+2022)[4], 라틴 소문자 Sinological Dot ꞏ (U+A78F), 일본어 나카구로 ・ (U+30FB)도 가운뎃점과는 다른 부호다. 닮은 꼴 문자가 가운뎃점의 용도로 이 글자가 쓰였다면 되도록 고쳐 주자.

모양이 비슷하다고 해서 비슷한 글자를 사용하는 것은 바람직하지 못하다. 겉으로 보기엔 별 차이 없어 보일지 모르지만, 컴퓨터는 전혀 다른 걸로 인식하므로 검색에서 매우 불편을 겪을 것이다. 또한, 몇몇 기호는 사용 중인 폰트에 없는 경우가 있으므로 의도치 않게 폰트가 전환되는 것을 방지하려면 될 수 있는대로 사용 중인 폰트가 지원하는 유니코드 블록의 기호를 사용하는 것이 좋다. 이는 I(대문자 i)를 숫자 1 대신 사용함과 같고[5], 라틴 문자 H(에이치)와 그리스 문자 Η(에타), 키릴 문자 Н(엔)를 구분하지 않고 사용함과 같다.

심지어 일부 바탕체, 궁서체 등 돋움체, 굴림체가 아닌 폰트에서는 모양조차 붓으로 찍은 듯한 모습을 하고 있어 사용하기 더욱 부적절해진다. 유니코드 표준 참고

국립국어원의 한글 맞춤법 부록에는 가운뎃점을 전부 아래아로 써 놓았다. 대한민국 법령 포털도 마찬가지이다. 국립국어원 우리말 365 상담원의 설명에 의하면, 컴퓨터의 가운뎃점 쓰임은 정해진 바가 없으므로, 모양이 위나 아래가 아닌 가운데에 점이 있기만 하면 어떤 기호를 써도 무방하다고 한다.(상담 캡처) 위 상담 내용과 함께 다른 문장부호의 유니코드 포인트를 묻는 질문에서 "문의하신 내용은 온라인 가나다에서 답변해 드릴 수 있는 범위를 벗어납니다. 관련 참고 서적을 두루 살펴보시기 바랍니다."라고 답변한 것을 볼 때, 국립국어원은 문장 부호의 전산화나 유니코드 지정은 자신들의 전문분야나 소관이 아니라고 보고, 문장 부호의 '형태'만을 규정하는 듯하다.

법조 실무에서도 같은 문제가 발생한다. 법제처에서 운영하는 국가법령정보센터에서 아래아를 쓴다. 2014년에 법제처에서 나온 "법제 기초 과정"의 103(pdf의 107번째 장)쪽에선, 한글(HNC) 문자표(한컴2바이트) 코드 번호 357D인 아래아를 가운뎃점으로 쓴다고 제시하고 있다. 행정기본법의 위임을 받은 행정규칙 시행량 제18조의 하위 대통령령인 '법제업무운영규정'에 따른 법제처의 '알기쉬운법령정비기준(제10판)'에는 법령에 가운뎃점을 입력할 때 한글(HNC)문자표 HNC코드(한컴2바이트코드, HNC2B)번호가 ‘357D’[전각 기호(일반)]인 가운뎃점(=아래아)을 쓰게 되어 있다.[6] 또, 법제처는 국가법령정보센터에 등재된 '대한민국헌법' 등의 가운뎃점(ㆍ)은 U+318D로 규정되었다고 한다.

즉, 정부 부처 일각에서는 아예 ·(U+00B7)를 무시하고 아래아 글자를 (전각) 가운뎃점을 나타내는 기호로 전용 내지 동일시하여 써 왔으며 그것이 규정으로까지 명문화되어 있었다고 할 수 있다. 엔지니어 입장에서는 부호는 부호대로, 옛한글은 옛한글대로 통일해서 쓰는 것이 바람직하겠지만, 아래아 한글 기준으로는 입력 난이도가 차원이 다르니 마냥 사용자들을 탓할 수도 없는 일이다.[7] 애초에 ·(U+00B7) 자체가 '이 기호는 한국어에서의 가운뎃점을 나타내기 위해 써라!'라며 만든 기호가 아니고, 그냥 '가운데에 점이 위치한 부호를 나타내는 문자'로 제정된 것이었다 보니 한국인들이 가운뎃점 용도로 꼭 U+00B7을 써야 한다는 의무가 있는 것도 아니었고, 나카구로(・)를 쓰든 불릿(•)을 쓰든 하이픈점(‧)을 쓰든 검은 원(●)을 쓰든 각 부처에서 실무에서 편한 대로 규정하기 나름이었던 것이다.

한 가지 문제가 있다면, 아래아는 애초에 문장부호용으로 만들어진 것이 아니라 옛한글의 모음을 나타내는 문자이므로 상기한 것과 같은 데이터 처리 문제나 실무상의 혼란을 초래할 수 있다는 것인데, 이는 아래아가 현대 국어와 일상생활은 물론 일반적인 디지털 문서에서도 전혀 쓰이지 않기 때문에 아예 신경쓸 필요가 없었다.[8] 반대로 중세국어와 관련된 학술 자료를 작성하는 경우라면 억지로라도 아래아와 가운뎃점을 구분해야 하겠지만 말이다.

하지만 근래는 판사들의 판결서에서 아래아를 거의 쓰지 않거니와[9], 무엇보다 2023년 법무부가 발표한 변호사시험 CBT 프로그램에서 아래아 사용을 배척하고 ·(U+00B7)를 채택했다.[10] "중대·명백설"로 쓰라는 것.

가운뎃점 용도로 아래아나 기타 다른 기호를 사용하는 사람들이 있는 이유는 또 있다. 종이책에서와는 달리 모바일이나 데스크탑 환경에서는 가운뎃점으로 ·(U+00B7)를 사용하면 점이 너무 작고 단어와 단어 사이가 좁아져서 가독성이 나쁘기 때문이다. 반면 아래아는 나카구로(・)와 마찬가지로 앞뒤와 적당히 간격이 벌어지는 전각 가운뎃점인데다 시인성도 비교적 나아, 원래 아래아가 가운뎃점이 아닌 것을 명확히 인식하고 있으면서도 그냥 대체하여 쓰는 경우가 적지 않을 것이다. 이 경우, 정 아래아를 쓰기는 껄끄럽고 로케일이나 폰트 호환성 문제로 나카구로를 사용하기도 꺼려진다면 불렛(•) 기호의 양 옆에 스페이스 공백을 넣거나 자간을 늘리는 방식으로 대체할 수 있다. 공백 사용 시 의도치 않은 위치에서 줄바꿈이 일어날 수 있어 NBSP 등을 사용해야 하니 또 다른 번거로움이 생길 수 있지만.

2.4. 비슷한 용법을 지닌 타 언어 문장부호

한국에서의 용법과 비슷하게 쓰려면 가운뎃점이 아니라 줄표(–: En dash) 또는 붙임표(-: Hyphen)가 권장된다. 아니면 그냥 쉼표를 사용하거나. 예를 들어 위에 제시된 예문에서 '한국과 이탈리아'를 '한·이'처럼 묶어서 표기하는 용례가 보이는데, 영어 기준으로는 Italy·South Korea라고 하지 않고 Italy–South Korea relations(위키백과)처럼 줄표를 사용하거나 일상적으로는 Italy-South Korea Relations(해외 논문)처럼 하이픈을 사용해 표기한다. 이는 디지털 환경에서 줄표보다 붙임표를 입력하는 것이 훨씬 편리하기 때문.[11]

단, 중국어를 비롯한 한문 표기에서는 열거를 나타낼 때 모점을 사용한다.

3. 타 언어의 사용

일본어: 일본어에서의 용법은 ・ 문서 참고. 일본어의 가운뎃점인 나카구로의 유니코드는 U+30FB로, 명칭은 KATAKANA MIDDLE DOT이다. 이 기호는 일본어에서만 사용되는 기호이므로 일본 이외의 외국어에 사용되어 있다면 (폰트 문제가 생긴다.) 위의 일반 유니코드(U+00B7)로 고쳐주기 바란다.
중국어: 외국어 인명의 성씨, middle name, 이름(given name)을 구분할 때 쓰인다.(예: 威廉·莎士比亚 (Wēilián Shāshìbǐyǎ, 윌리엄 셰익스피어)
고전 라틴어: 단어를 구분하기 위해 쓰였다.(예: DONA·EIS·REQVIEM) 유니코드 상의 가운뎃점은 이 라틴어의 가운뎃점(middle dot)을 일컫는다.
스페인 카탈루냐어: l·l(발음 /ɫː/)과 ll(발음 /ʎ/)을 구분하기 위해 쓰인다.(예: cel·la vs. cella)
프랑스 오크어: s·h(발음 /s.h/)와 sh(발음 /ʃ/), n·h(발음 /n.h/)와 nh(발음 /ɲ/)를 구분하기 위해 쓰인다. 즉 가운뎃점이 들어간 것은 가운뎃점 앞·뒤 두 글자의 발음을 각각 따로 하고, 가운뎃점이 들어가지 않은 것은 그 두 글자가 합쳐져서 하나의 발음을 나타낸다.

현대 프랑스어: 성 중립언어운동 계열에서 남자와 여자가 모두 있는 집단에서의 복수형을 표기할 때 쓰인다. 전통적으로 프랑스어는 남녀 혼성집단의 복수형을 적을 적에 남성복수형을 사용하지만, 성 중립언어에서는 가운뎃점으로 남성형과 여성형을 같이 표기한다. 예를 들어 남자 감독 1명과 여자 감독 500명이 한 집단에 있는 경우를 보자. 전통적으로는 남성형인 les directeurs라고 하겠지만, 성 중립언어운동 식으로는 가운뎃점을 써서 les directeur·rice·s가 된다. 한 초등 교과서 판본에 이 규칙이 반영되어서 논란이 되었다.
가운뎃점으로 된 한국어를 번역하는 경우, 서양권에서는 En Dash라 불리는 줄표를 쓴다. Gimcheon–Gumi Station, Deokpung–Sinjang 등.

4. 입력 방법

언론사, 출판사 에서 상당히 많이 쓰는 기호인데도 키보드에 없어서 불편이 크다. 다음과 같이 해서 가운뎃점을 입력할 수 있다.

Microsoft Windows

MS 한국어 IME 기준으로 [ㄱ+한자 키]로 나오는 창의 2번째 페이지 8번에 위치해 있다.

ㄱ→한자키→PageDown→8 순으로 하면 마우스 안 쓰고 빠르게 입력할 수 있다.

매크로 프로그램으로 설정하는 경우 Shift + Backspace로 설정해두면 편하다.
(텐키리스 키보드에서는 유니코드 주소를 사용해야 한다.) Alt 키를 누른 채 오른쪽 숫자 키패드에서 +, 1, 8, 3을 순서대로 누르고 Alt 키를 떼면 된다. 한컴오피스 한글이나 크롬에서 Alt+(0)183(오른쪽 키패드), 마이크로소프트 워드에서 Alt+0183(오른쪽 키패드)을 누르면 가운뎃점을 입력할 수 있다.
(Windows 10 1809 이후) 윈도우키 + .(또는 ;)을 누르면 이모지 배열이 뜨는데, 상단에서 Ω, 하단에서 <를 선택할 때 7행5열에 있다.
아래아 한글에서 아무런 설정을 안 했으면 Shift+ㅏ를 누르면 모음 아래아(U+318D)가 나온다. 자체 제공하는 ‘두벌식 표준 2’ 자판으로 숫자 1 왼쪽에 있는 `를 치면 ` 대신은 가운뎃점이 나온다. 기본값은 ‘두벌식 표준’이므로, 이걸 쓰려면 Alt+F2를 누르면 나오는 입력기 환경 설정에서 ‘한국어’ - ‘두벌식 표준 2’를 선택하여야 된다.
세벌식 391(최종) - 가운뎃점(U+00B7)을 바로 입력할 수 있다(쿼티 기준으로 shift + ').
세벌식 390이나 389 등은 가운뎃점(U+00B7)이 배정되어 있지 않다.
세벌식 중에서 세벌식 3-P3 기호 확장안, 신세벌식 2015, 신세벌식 P, 세벌식 모아치기 e-2016 자판에는 가운뎃점이 배정되어 있다.
가운뎃점을 복사한 뒤 Win+V로 클립보드를 열어 가운뎃점을 고정해두는 식의 활용도 가능하다.
PowerToys의 키보드 매니저 기능을 이용하여 잘 쓰지 않는 키를 가운뎃점을 입력하는 기능으로 리매핑이 가능하다.

macOS

입력 언어를 영어로 설정 후 option+shift+9 를 눌러 입력할 수 있다.
키보드 환경 설정에서 입력 소스를 "유니코드 Hex 입력"으로 바꾼 뒤, Alt(=Option) 키를 누른 상태에서 0, 0, b, 7을 순서대로 눌러 입력할 수 있다.

Ubuntu

Ctrl+Shift+U→B→7→Enter 순으로 입력할 수 있다.

안드로이드

Gboard - 입력할 수 없다.[12] 기호 카테고리에 가면 가운뎃점 대신 좀 더 굵은 불릿기호 •(U+2022)가 대신 있다.
삼성 갤럭시 - 영어 자판에서 L을 길게 눌러서 가운뎃점을 선택하여 사용할 수 있다.[13] 기호 카테고리에 가면 Gboard와 마찬가지로 가운뎃점 대신 불릿기호 •가 대신 있다.
LG 스마트폰,[14] 팬택 스카이의 번들 키보드 - 입력할 수 없다. Bullet(U+2022)과 천지인의 천(모음 아래아, U+318D)만 있을 뿐, 가운뎃점(U+00B7)은 입력할 수 없다.
노타 키보드 - 입력할 수 없다.
가나다 키보드 - 입력할 수 없다.
알키보드 - 기호 자판에서 alt를 누르면 맨 아랫줄에 있다.
하이브리드 키보드 - 단모음 자판에서 ㅁ을 슬라이드하여 입력할 수 있다.
천지인 더블 키보드 - 기호 자판의 11페이지에 있다. 특이하게도 천지인의 천을 모음 아래아(U+318D)/중성 아래아(U+119E)가 아닌 가운뎃점(U+00B7)으로 처리하여, 천지인 자판에서 천을 치고 다른 모음을 조합하지 않으면 가운뎃점이 대신 입력된다.
모아키 - 천지인 더블 키보드와 비슷하게 천지인의 천을 모음 아래아(U+318D)/중성 아래아(U+119E)가 아닌 가운뎃점(U+00B7)으로 처리하여, 천지인 자판에서 천을 치고 다른 모음을 조합하지 않으면 가운뎃점이 대신 입력된다.
네이버 스마트보드 - 기호 자판에서 사용할 수 있다.

기본으로 제공되는 두벌식과 10키(천지인) 모두 입력할 수 없다. 두벌식은 Bullet(U+2022)만 있고, 10키는 Bullet과 아래아만 있다.
아래 서술된 워드프로세서 자동 바꿈과 같은 기능인 텍스트 대치를 이용해 입력할 수 있다. 설정→일반→키보드→텍스트 대치에서 설정할 수 있다.
네이버 스마트보드 - 상세설정→숫자/기호 자판 설정에서 3X4형을 선택하면 기호 자판에서 입력할 수 있다.[15]

워드프로세서 자동 바꿈

(c)를 치면 ©로 자동바꿈이 되는 것과 같은 기능을 개인이 설정할 수 있다. MS워드 기준으로 옵션→언어교정→자동고침 즈음에 이를 설정할 수 있는 메뉴가 있다. 가령 (.)을 입력하면 가운뎃점이 나타나게 할 수 있다. 다만 조금 편하게 하자면, ㅏㅏ를 치면 ㆍ(아래아) ,,를 치면 · (가운뎃점)이 나타나게도 설정할 수 있다.(꼭 그렇게 설정 해야만 하는 것은 아니며, 가운뎃점 용법과 비슷한 것으로는 슬래시(/)가 있으니 이를 활용하여 만들어도 되며, 다만 현실에선 //는 프로그래밍 주석용으로 널리 쓰이고 있는 기호란 점은 주의해야 한다.)
