1. 사전적 의미

Portal

커다란 정문을 가리키는 영어 단어이다. 아래에서 보듯, 근래에는 판타지에서 순간이동용 문을 가리키는 표현으로 자주 쓰인다.

한글 표준 표기는 [pɔːrtəl]을 따라 '포털'이지만 일상에서는 '포탈'이 자주 보인다.

어원은 "문"을 뜻하는 라틴어 porta다.# 프랑스어에서는 지금도 "문"을 porte라고 한다. 기원을 따고 들어가자면 "항구"를 뜻하는 port 역시 어원은 같다. 단, 라틴어 시기부터 portal 계열 단어와 port 계열 단어는 어근은 공유하지만 형식은 차이를 보이고 있었던 듯하다.

게르만어 계열 영어 어휘 중에서 gate, gateway와 어느 정도 의미가 유사하다.

2. 매체에서의 등장

대중 매체에서는 서로 다른 공간이나 시간대를 이어주는 출입구를 의미한다.

주로 기계적인 관점에서 다뤄지는 초공간도약과 워프, 초능력적인 관점에서 다뤄지는 순간이동과 비교해 보자면 포털은 두 방식 모두로 묘사되곤 한다. 주로 워프나 초공간도약이 거대한 공간을 휘어내는 대규모 현상으로 묘사된다면, 포털은 좀 더 작은 규모로 묘사되어 일상적으로 쓰이는 식의 묘사가 많다.

2.1. 경향성

각종 창작물에서 이동에 실패할까봐 싫어하는 등장인물이 있는 클리셰가 있다. 당장 현실에서도 비행기는 사고율이 매우 낮지만 비행기 사고를 우려하여 항공기 탑승을 꺼리는 사람이 있는 것과 같다. 포털이 아니라 순간이동으로 좀 자르긴 하지만 2016년 트리 오브 세이비어에서 텔레포트에 실패한 유저가 죽는 버그가 일어나자 그것이 이해가 가는 사람들이 생겼다. 이러한 공포증이라도 없으면 다른 이동수단을 만들 필요가 없어져 묘사가 심심해지는 탓도 있다.

몇몇 매체에서는 꼭 포털 이용의 실패율이 높지 않더라도 이용하는 데에 비싸다는 식의 묘사가 있기도 하다.

포탈을 공격적으로 이용해서 대상의 일부만을 포털에 끼운 채 포털을 강제로 닫아 물리적 내구도를 무시하고 절단해버리는 공간절단같은 효과를 내기도 한다.

세이버 시스템은 자와메 시 지하 방수로에 설치된 거대한 장치다. 쿠도 쿠가이가 흑의 보리수의 사람들을 이용해 만든 것으로, 양산형 석류 록 시드에 의해 폭사하면 세이버 시스템의 에너지가 된다. 심장부는 헬헤임의 숲의 식물과 복잡하게 융합되어 있다. 본래 인류 말살 병기라고 추측되었으나, 전 인류를 육체의 제약으로부터 해방시켜 생사를 초월한 존재인 쿠도 쿠가이와 일체화시키기 위한 시스템이었으며, 부활 포털이라는 것이 밝혀진다.

더 위쳐 시리즈
플레이 도중 다른 지역으로 가는 데 가끔 쓰인다. 주인공 리비아의 게롤트는 포털을 매우 싫어하는데, 이유가 실패 확률이 무려 1%기 때문. 즉, 100번 포털을 타면 1번은 경을 칠 수 있다는 거다. 사람들이 현실에서 체감하는 교통사고나 의료사고, 약물 부작용 등의 확률과 비교해보면 매우 큰 확률임을 알 수 있다. 겁날 만하다. 실제로도 포털 주변에 가끔 시체들이 있으며, 게롤트가 다른 게임에 콜라보로 등장할 때는 꼭 포털을 잘못 타서 그 세계에 왔다는 경위로 오게 된다.

포털의 정의와는 비슷하지만 순간이동이 아니라 게임상 설정으로는 그냥 평범한 건물을 들어가거나 통로를 이동할 때도 포털을 사용하기 때문에 대체 무슨 원리인지 알 수 없다. 횡스크롤인 이상 맵 이동이 필요하겠지만, 이를 게임 내에서 뭐라 설명할 방도가 없는지 포털의 원리는 거의 언급되지 않는다. 다만 크리티아스에 있는 케르타포르타나 디멘션 게이트처럼 진짜 먼 곳까지 이동하는, 포털의 정의와 비슷한 물건들도 있다. 아이러니하게도 제논의 본거지인 베리타스에 있는 프로메사는 차원 이동 장치라고 쓰여 있어서 더욱 미스터리. 프렌즈 월드와의 통로는 평행우주로 이동시켜 주지만, 이 또한 별다른 설명은 없다. 현재는 그 디자인이 바뀌었다. 옛 포털은 리에나 해협의 해양 한가운데에서 볼 수 있다.
외전 게임인 메이플스토리 DS에서 보면 포털에 들어가는 원리는 포털 속에 구멍이 있고, 그 구멍 속으로 들어가는 것이다. 구멍에서 빛이 나오는데, 그걸 표현한 게 포털. 오류가 난 포털은 빨간색을 띤다.

정확히는 토끼 미라클스톤의 요정 플러프의 능력이다. '토끼굴!'이라고 외치면 포털이 생성되며 그 안에서 과거, 미래를 마음대로 여행할 수 있다.

꽤 자주 다뤄지는 요소이다. 포탈 시리즈와 하프라이프 시리즈는 같은 세계를 공유한다. 애초에 하프 라이프 시리즈의 시작에 포털이 있었고, 게임 내에서 가장 많은 영향을 미치는 것도 포털이다. 하프라이프에서의 포털은 대체로 무언가 기계적, 과학적인 의미에서 다뤄지는데, 적절한 장치를 만들고 적절한 에너지를 공급하면 사용할 수 있게 된다고 한다.

하프라이프 시리즈
구현 능력을 비교하면 대체로 G맨 ≥ 보르티곤트 ≥ 콤바인 = 인간 정도로 분류할 수 있다. 인간의 경우 애초에 보르티곤트의 고향 Xen 행성에서 나는 광물이 필요하다는 게 흠이다. 하지만 하프라이프 2에서는 콤바인이나 인간이나 사용 에너지만 다른 비슷한 포털을 사용한다. 콤바인은 인간과는 달리 광물이 아닌 "암흑 에너지"를 사용하며, 각 우주 사이를 뚫는 포털은 뛰어나지만, 인간과 다르게 같은 우주 내에서는 사용하지 못한다.[1] 보르티곤트는 콤바인과 큰 차이가 없지만 일단 과학적인 방식으로 포털을 사용하는 콤바인과는 달리 초능력적인 방식으로 사용한다는 점에서 콤바인보단 포털 사용에 제약이 덜하다. G맨은 그 초능력의 수준이 보르티곤트와 엇비슷하거나 더 강하다는 묘사가 있다.
Portal 시리즈
게임 내 묘사만 두고 하프라이프 시리즈의 포털 기술들과 비교해보면, 가장 안정적이고[2] 제약사항이 적은 포털 기술에 속한다. 포털 기술에 대한 자세한 설정이 밝혀진 적은 없으나, 마이크로 블랙홀이 필요하며, 양자 터널링 효과를 사용한다는 것을 보면 하프라이프 시리즈에 등장한 그 어떤 포털 기술과도 다른 방식의 포털 기술인 것으로 추측된다.

버프소녀 오오라
지구에 도래한 레비아탄인들의 주된 장기 중 하나다. 주인공 오오라의 오빠 오오우가 포털을 관리하는 포털 엔지니어로, 레비아탄인의 포털 기술을 통해 지구에서 적응을 모색하고 있다.
빅 히어로
순간이동 포털을 앨러스터 크레이가 개발했다. 한 포털로 들어가면 반대쪽 포털로 나오는 장치다. 실험 중 아비게일 칼라한이 포털 속으로 들어갔다가 공간 속에 갇혀버리고[3] 블랙홀이 되었다. 이에 로버트 칼라한은 자신의 딸이 포털 속에 갇힌 것 때문에 크레이의 회사를 블랙홀 포털로 빨아들인다. 그렇게 빅 히어로와 전투가 일어났고, 전투가 끝난 후 히로 아르마다는 베이맥스와 함께 포털 속으로 들어가 로버트 칼라한의 딸을 구해낸다.

엘더스크롤 시리즈

4.1. 하이퍼링크를 가리키는 인터넷 용어

타운 포탈에서 유래한 말이다. 어떤 특정한 게시판 글이나 블로그 포스트에 갑자기 댓글이 모여들어 만선이 되었을 때, 그 게시판이나 블로그 글 주소가 다른 대형 사이트(ex:디시인사이드)에 하이퍼링크가 링크된 경우가 있고, 이런 것을 '포탈이 열렸다'라고 한다. 그래서 관심이 집중되는 사이트로 바로 가는 URL 주소나 링크를 포털이라 칭하여 '포탈 좀'이라고 하면서 해당 사이트로 가는 링크를 제공해 달라고 하기도 한다.

또한 여기에서 더 나아가서 특정 게시물이나 인터넷 뉴스 등의 하이퍼링크 주소를 따서 해당 게시물에 공격을 하는 것이나 특정 단체에 유리한 여론을 선동하는 등의 정보 조작 행위를 시도할 때도 '포탈 열었다'라는 표현을 사용하기도 한다. 이는 디시인사이드 초창기부터 사용되었던 꽤 유서 깊은 용례. 현재는 이쪽 의미로는 '좌표 찍었다'가 더 자주 쓰인다.
