1. 개요

木板/Woodblock
특정 문서·그림을 많이 복제하거나 인쇄하기 위해 목재에 입체적으로 새겨 제작된 기록판 및 예술품. 말그대로 목재로 만든 판자를 뜻하기도 하지만 인문학적으로는 인쇄 도구로 한정한 용례가 대부분이다.

2. 변천사

목재 조각을 통한 복제 기술은 간단하게 인도, 중동의 섬유 염색 -> 중국의 종이 인쇄 발명 -> 동아시아 확산 -> 유럽 확산 -> 쇠퇴 순으로 요약할 수 있다.

2.1. 동양

동양의 목판 형태[1]

2.1.1. 한국

현존하는 가장 오래된 목판 인쇄물인 무구정광대다라니경, 세계 최대 수준의 팔만대장경 등 경판[2]은 물론 조선시대 한국의 유교책판이 다수 제작되고 심지어 백과사전 목판도 있는 등 최소 1,500년 가량 목판 인쇄문화가 꽃피웠다.[3] 물론 판화같이 사상적으로 중요한 그림도 기록했고, 판자 가공, 뒤틀림 방지 기술 등이 적용됐다. 이러한 목판에 먹을 묻혀 종이를 올려 문지르고 떼어내 인쇄했다.제작 및 인쇄 금속활자가 여말선초 이미 개발됐지만 문서에 나오듯 문제점 해결을 못해서 묻혔다. 기존 책을 해체해서 목판에 붙여 새기는 '번각'도 잦았고, 오자가 발견되면 도려내고 새 목재를 박아 다시 새기는 등※ 가변적인 모습도 있었다. 또한 판심 등 자세한 문서 규격이 있었고 아예 판각자 이름자를 넣어서 책임지고 만들게 했다.※ 조선 후기부터는 민간에서 방각본을 찍어내는 등 상업화되기도 했다.

물론 목판화는 현재로선 말할것도 없다. 한국은 대부분 종교 혹은 대동여지도 등 실용적 목적으로 했다.[4] 그리고 책 표지에 예술적인 엠보싱 무늬를 박기 위한 능화판 [5], 무늬 편지지를 찍어내는 시전지판도 만들어졌다.

종이 인쇄 외에도 여러가지로 쓰였다. 자수 놓기 위한 밑그림을 옷감에 찍는 목판 수본#, 목판 날염, 즉 인염(판염) 염색에 쓰이는 날염판(채화판)※, 금박을 붙이기 위해 무늬 모양으로 접착제를 묻히는 목판도 있다.※ 굳이 추가로 언급하자면 절편에 무늬를 찍는 떡살, 다식을 찍어내는 다식판 등 식품을 꾸미는 목적의 목판 형태의 틀을 꼽을 수 있다. 각 문서 참조.

목판에 새기고 제작하는 직업을 각자장(刻字匠)이라 한다. 대한민국의 국가무형유산 제106호.

2.1.2. 중국

목판 인쇄의 발상지가 중국이었을 것이 학계의 정설이다.[6] 이러한 이유는 중국이 당시에 발명할 만한 여건을 갖추고 있었기 때문이라는 것이다. 애초 금석문이나 비석에 먹을 묻혀 탁본하는 일이 일찍부터 성행했다. 또한, 인도에서 발생한 불상을 비단에다 찍어 날염하는 방식이 불교와 함께 중국으로 전해진 7세기 경부터는 목판에다 불상이나 부적을 새기고 먹칠하여 종이를 씌운 다음 부드러운 면포로 문질러 찍는 방법으로 발전하였다. 또, 한나라 때부터 인장이 민·관 안가리고 널리 보편화되었는데, 인장을 새기는 기술은 5세기에 이르러 획기적인 발전을 했다. 이후 양각(陽刻)도 고안해 목판 인쇄술의 핵심 기술이 됐다.※ 한편 목판화 자체는 7세기 둔황에서 발견된 금강경 불화가 현존하는 세계에서 가장 오래된 것으로 인정받고 있다.[A] 이후 한반도, 일본, 세계로 퍼졌다.

한편 천에 염색하거나, 포장지 등의 문양을 만들기 위해 화지(花紙)라는 문양 목판 인쇄를 했다.[B]

8세기 나라시대 중국, 한국을 거쳐 전래됐고 쇼토쿠 덴노 시절 조성된 백만탑다라니경이 대표적인 대량 제작이었다.※ 일본도 팔만대장경 문서에 나오듯 자체적으로 제작 시도를 할 만큼 기술을 보유했다. 근세에는 예술적, 상업적인 면에서 다색 판화까지 개발, 특유의 우키요에가 꽃피워 실로 엄청나게 찍어댔다.

또한 가라카미(당지, 唐紙)라는 전통문양 목판 인쇄를 했으며, 다색으로도 포장지를 찍어냈고, 기모노 문양을 찍는 목판, 공판화 기법 형지 염색 등도 발전하였다.[B]

2.1.4. 베트남

여느 동아시아처럼 불경, 그림 등을 목판에 새겼고, 특히 마지막 왕조인 응우옌 왕조 왕실 문서 목판, 빈 응이엠(Vinh Nghiem) 사원의 목판 불경도 세계기록유산에 등재됐다.※

전통 목판화 예술인 동호(Đông Hồ) 민화가 있는데 소멸위기라서 ‘긴급 보호가 필요한 무형문화유산’ 등재 추진 중이다. 일상생활과 놀이 그리고 풍속 등을 소재로 하는 다색판화이다.※

2.2. 인도·중동

앞서 언급했듯이 천을 날염하는 인도의 목판 날염이 종이 인쇄 목판의 등장에 영향을 준 만큼 역사가 오래된 것은 당연하다. 깔람깔리(친츠, 핀타토, 사라사) 목판 염색은 긴 역사를 갖고 있으며※ 유럽으로 수출돼 그곳에 방식이 전파될 정도로 유명한데 당분간 유럽이 모방하기 힘들 정도로 정교했다.※

중동 역시 날염 목판이 5세기 것도 나와, 등장 시점이 그 전으로 추정하고 있다.[A]

2.3. 서양

한편 중국의 인쇄술이 서양에도 전래돼 성경 그림, 플레잉 카드 등을 찍었는데[11] 유럽에서 가장 오래된 목판화 <성 크리스토퍼>가 14세기 후반이므로 그때쯤 들어온 듯하다.※ 이게 자체적으로 발전, 금속활자 개발로 글씨 인쇄 쪽은 그쪽으로 갈아탔다. 물론 그림은 계속 목판 인쇄로 계속 찍고, 다양한 판화 기법으로 속속 분화된다.

2.4. 근현대

물론 석판, 점토판보다 보관이 까다롭고 불에 약해서 위 팔만대장경같이 천년을 버틴 것도 기적의 연속이었다. 무엇보다 서양에서 금속활자를 '대중화'[12]한게 근대 동아시아에 들어와서 급격히 쇠퇴했다. 이후 현대에 프린터 기술 발달로 대중적인 그림 인쇄 역할도 내주고 예술의 영역에서 남아있다.

3. 서체에 대한 영향

손글씨와 달리 목재에 새겨야 하는 특성상 서체도 그에 영향을 받을 수밖에 없었다. 명조체만 해도 목판 인쇄 개발로 목재에 새기며 부서지는 것을 막기 위해 꺾이게 깎은 것이다. 훈민정음 역시 초창기 새기기 편한 판본체 형태로 시작했다. 각 문서 참조.

4. 여담

현판같이 전근대 중요 건물 간판도 장식 많은 것 빼면 기술 자체가 다를 것도 없다.[13] 현재도 시구절 등을 새겨 장식하는 수요가 있는데 이런 쪽은 보통 서각이라고 따로 지칭한다.

동북아에서 목판은 시대 변화, 전란을 거치며 많이 훼손, 멸실됐다. 중국에선 닭장, 집을 짓는 데 사용했고, 일본에선 화로나 분첩을, 한국에선 불쏘시개로 써 만들어진 것보다 남아 있는 유물이 훨씬 적다. 남은 것들은 다수 국외로 반출되거나 소장자가 창고에 방치했다.※ 심지어 일제강점기 활자 부분을 무늬로 활용해 함을 만든 사례도 있다.※ 위에 나오듯 책을 파해 목판으로 만들곤 한 걸 보면 수많은 고서 내용들이 그대로 사라졌을 것이다.
