1. 개요

• 2022년 8월 5일: 대탈출의 총연출을 맡고 있는 정종연 PD가 tvN 퇴사를 확정지었다. 새로운 PD가 담당하지 않는 한 후속 시즌의 제작이 불투명해졌다.
• 2022년 11월 9일: 김태호, 이태경 PD와 함께 진행한 유튜브 라이브를 통해 데블스 플랜(시즌 1)이 끝나는 대로 대탈출5와 여고추리반3 제작에 들어 갈 것이고 출연진들에게 제작 계획을 말해두었다고 밝혔다.
• 2024년 1월 16일: 출연진인 피오의 제대 이후 보조 출연자 모집 업체인 캐스팅 DB의 게시판에서 대탈출이라는 프로그램명으로 스케줄이 올라오며 10월부터 바로 촬영에 들어간 듯해 보였으나, TEO 채널 살롱드립2에 출연한 정종연 PD가 직접 이를 해명하며 현재 대탈출 시즌 5에 대한 계획이 전혀 없음을 밝혔다. # 시즌 5의 연출 여부에 대해서도 확실히 밝히지 않았고 당시 미스터리 수사단 1 방영을 준비 중이고 데블스 플랜 2도 2025년 방영을 목표로 제작 확정이 된 상황이라 스케줄상 쉽지 않은 상황이다. 또, 해당 영상에서 미스터리 수사단이 잘 되면 데블스 플랜 2 종영 후 틈없이 다음작으로 미스터리 수사단 시즌2를 바로 방영하고 싶다고 밝힌 바 있다.
• 한편으로 제작이 확정된 TVING 예능이자 같은 세계관을 공유했던 여고추리반3에서도 정종연 PD가 연출에서 빠지게 되었다. 이로 인해 여고추리반3은 DTCU 세계관에 포함되지 못 하는 작품이 되었는데, 만일 대탈출도 리부트를 촬영하게 된다 하더라도 DTCU 세계관에 포함되지 못할 수도 있다. 여고추리반3 방영 초기 탈출러이자 태평여고 '오대양' 역으로 출연했던 유병재 유튜브 채널에 추리러 박지윤, 최예나가 광고 차원에서 출연했는데, 영상 초반에 유병재가 "촬영하게 된 게 너무 부럽다. 나도 이제 언제 다시 시작하나 계속 기다리고 있는 입장에서… (중략) 사실 피오 전역하면 바로 시작이겠구나! 했는데 피오 머리가 지금 많이 길었는데도 아직 시작을 못 하고 있어 가지고…"라고 얘기하는 장면이 나와 시청자들의 아쉬움을 자아냈다.
• 2024년 6월 27일: 정종연 PD가 직접 대탈출 5 제작은 어렵다고 말했다.
• 2024년 9월: 티빙 측 관계자가 대탈출 리부트라는 이름으로 준비중인 새 시즌이 개발 초기 단계로, 의논 중이라고 밝혔다.
• 2024년 11월: 공식 기사로 환승연애4와 함께 대탈출 리부트라는 이름으로 2025년 방영 예정임을 밝혔다. ‘환승연애4’·‘대탈출 리부트’, 2025년에 본다 [공식]
• 우선 대탈출 리부트는 정종연 PD에서 이우형 PD가 제작을 맡으며, 2025년 방영 예정인 만큼 출연진도 미정인 상태라 불안감을 느끼는 팬들이 많다. 대탈출의 특장점이라고 할 수 있는 정종연의 세트와 디테일에 대한 집착과 출연진들의 케미와 개성이 자칫 사라질 수 있다는 점이다. 특히 시즌 1부터 4까지 대탈출을 이끌어온 정종연은 버라이어티+추리 장르 부분에서 거의 독자적인 위치를 하고 있기에, 비슷한 장르를 다뤄보지 않은 이우형 PD를 신뢰할 수 있는지에 대한 우려도 크다.
• 2024년 12월 28일: 엑소의 멤버 백현이 대탈출에 합류한다는 기사가 발표되었다. # 이후 고경표, 여진구의 합류가 확정되었고 김종민, 신동, 피오가 하차한 것이 확인되었다. 이러하여 최종 6인의 출연진이 모두 확정되었다. 출연진 선정 관련 논란은 후술.
• '더 스토리'라는 부제로 보아 크라임씬 리턴즈처럼 모든 에피소드가 연결된 구조를 띠고 있는 거 아니냐는 추측이 있으나, 리부트를 선언한 이상 기존의 세계관들 자체는 존재하되 스토리나 캐릭터는 바뀔 수도 있으며, 0화 풀버전에 의하면 '다섯 개의 시공간에서 다섯 명의 악인을 상대한다'라고 하는데, 이를보면 기존 4대 세계관(좀비, 귀신, SSA, 타임머신)에 새로운 1개 세계관[1]을 더해서 5대 세계관의 스토리가 진행되는것이 기정사실화됐다.

3. 특징

3.1. 기존 시즌과의 차이점

• 오프닝이 사라졌다. 그러면서 매 시즌마다 보여줬던 버스 토크[2][3]나 세트 입장씬, 안대 미션이 사라졌다. 스페이스 카우보이의 BGM이 깔리는 간지나는 오프닝 영상이 없어지고 밋밋하게 바뀌었다는 점에서 시청자들의 반응은 매우 좋지 않은 편.

• 엔딩이 사라졌다. 성공 구호도 기존의 단상이 아닌 타임머신 안에서 외치는 걸로 변경되었다. 갇혀 있는 공간에서 벗어나서 성공 구호를 외치는 순간의 카타르시스를 좋아하던 시청자들에게는 오히려 좁은 타임머신에 갇혀서 성공 구호를 외치는 모습으로 보여지며 호불호가 갈리고 있다. 2화의 마지막에 타임머신 안에서 성공구호를 외쳤을 때 '다음편의 도입부는 타임머신 안에서 시작하는 장면으로 그대로 이어지는 게 아닐까?' 하는 추측이 돌기도 했지만, 결국 3화의 시작은 타임머신 연구실의 문을 열고 들어오는 장면부터 시작한다.

• 마찬가지로 결정적인 단서를 찾을 때마다 스페이스 카우보이의 BGM들과 덥스텝 등이 활용되던 전작들과 달리 전체적인 BGM들도 밋밋하게 바뀌어서 연출적인 면에서 좀 심심해졌다. 아무래도 작중 분위기 및 스토리에 더 집중하려고 그런 것 같지만...

• 좌측 상단에 뜨던 프로그램 로고와 장소 자막이 사라진 대신,[4] 에피소드 제목이 장소가 아닌 하당 회차 제목으로 바뀌었다.

• 지난 시즌에 비해 접근성이 크게 악화되었다. 먼저 기존 시즌은 tvN에서 방송했었기 때문에 만약에 TV에서 깜빡하고 대탈출의 새 에피소드를 못 봤다고 가정해도 tvN 공식 유튜브 채널에 올라오는 요약 영상을 보면 어느 정도 재미 있게 볼 수 있었으나 대탈출: 더 스토리는 TVING 독점 스트리밍이다. 그러므로 TVING에 가입하지 않으면 시청 자체가 불가능하다. 이와 동시에 사실상 대탈출: 더 스토리의 각 에피소드의 요약 영상이 유튜브에 올라갈 가능성도 한없이 낮아질 수밖에 없다. 기존 시즌처럼 유튜브에 각 에피소드의 요약 영상을 게시하면 TVING 독점 스트리밍이라는 몇 개 안 되는 장점이 흐릿해지거나 사라질 수밖에 없다.

• OTT로 넘어오면서 심의 규정이 약해져서 욕설이나 출혈 등 다소 잔인한 장면들도 묵음이나 모자이크 없이 그대로 나오는 등 전반적으로 수위가 올라갔다. 이전처럼 무서운 장면이 포함되어 있으니 주의하라는 경고 자막도 띄우지 않는다.

• 시즌마다 직접적으로 이어지는 에피소드가 반을 넘지 않았던 기존 시즌들과 달리, 전체 에피소드를 타임머신 세계관으로 묶어[5] 크라임씬 리턴즈처럼 하나로 이어지도록 만들었다.

• 시즌 1처럼 탈출 실패를 다시 암묵적으로 없앴다. 모든 에피소드가 이어지는 구성이기 때문에 탈출 실패가 발생하면 이후 에피소드들에도 영향이 가기 때문. 그래서인지 탈출 실패 확률이 높아지는 상황에서도 어느 정도 멤버들을 배려하는 모습이 보인다. 그러나 이 때문에 중요한 부분에서 몰입감이 떨어진다는 비판 의견이 존재한다.[6]

• 성공 구호를 불과 4개밖에 외치지 않았다. 에피소드가 5개고 탈출 실패가 없는데 4개인 이유는 폐광산의 비밀 편에서 너무 급하게 탈출한 나머지 성공 구호를 외치는 걸 까먹었기 때문이다.
