2. 개발사

M1 에이브람스 개발 당시 미국 육군과 방산업체들은 여러가지 이유로 XM1에 독일제 120mm 라인메탈 Rh-120 활강포 보다는 미국 육군의 표준 M68 105mm 포를 선호했다. 우선, 105mm 포는 당시 기갑 임무에 적합한 가장 작고, 가볍고, 가장 저렴한 포로 여겨졌다. 실제로 당시 미 육군이 개발 중이던 이 105mm 신형 운동 에너지탄은 이 포의 유용성을 장래에도 크게 확장할 것으로 기대되었다. 또한 육군의 다른 전차인 M60 전차와 개량형 M48 패튼, 그리고 거의 모든 NATO 회원국의 전차가 105mm 포를 사용했기 때문에 XM1에 이 포를 장착하면 동맹 내 표준화가 강화될 것으로 예상되었다. 여기에 XM1용 신형 탄약의 지속 개발은 사실상 NATO의 다른 모든 포를 자동으로 업그레이드하는 것과 같았다. 이러한 모든 이유로 XM1의 개발은 105mm 강선포가 주무장이 될 가능성이 높다는 가정 하에 진행되었다.

그러다가 1975년 영국-미국-독일 3자 간 포 시험으로 미 국방부는 장래 어느 시점에 XM1에 어떤 설계의 120mm포가 추가될 것이라는 데 합의했다. 이를 예상한 크라이슬러와 제너럴 모터스는 모두 각자의 XM1 설계안 개발 중에 다양한 주포와 호환되도록 구조를 변경했다. 미 육군이 로열 오드넌스 L11A5 강선포와 라인메탈 Rh-120의 성능을 비교하는 시험을 거친 후, 육군 장관은 1978년 1월 Rh-120 120mm 활강포가 XM1의 양산형에 장착될 것이라고 발표했다.

M256 120mm포는 1979년에 에이브럼스의 주력무기로 선정되었지만, 이 포에 사용될 개량형 탄약은 아직 완전히 개발되지 않아 1984년까지 실전 배치가 지연되면서 초기형 M1 에이브람스는 105mm M68로 무장했다.

120mm 활강포는 뉴욕 워터블리트에 있는 워터블리트 조병창에서 제조 허가를 받았다. 1980년 10월부터 1981년 9월까지 워터블리트 병기창은 XM256 대포 8문과 예비 포관 14개를 제작했고, 이후 M256으로 채택된 포는 M1A1 에이브람스부터 미군의 표준 전차포로 채택되었다.

미국 전차 역사가인 짐 워포드(Jim Warford)에 따르면 미국 정보부는 소련 장갑차의 효율성을 과소평가했는데, 105mm 강선포는 당대 최신 소련 전차에 상대가 되지 않았다.

3. 특징

M256은 미국에서 라인메탈 120mm L/44 활강포를 라이센스 생산한 버전이 맞긴 하지만, 로열 오드넌스 L7과 L7의 미국 라이센스 생산형인 M68의 관계처럼 원본을 그대로 면허 생산한 것은 아니고 몇가지 개량을 거친 물건이다. M256은 포신 등을 제외한 대부분의 부품을 미국제로 사용하고, 주퇴기를 개량하여 라인메탈제 활강포보다 약간 경량화 시키는 등 전부는 아니지만 미국이 자체적으로 개발한 부분들도 들어간다.

라인메탄 Rh-120과의 대표적인 차이점으로 주퇴복좌기의 설계인데, Rh-120이 유기압식 주퇴복좌기를 쓰는 것과 달리 M256은 공축 스프링 주퇴복좌기를 쓴다. 또한 포신 지지 구조물이 에이브람스의 포신 구동 장비와 주퇴복좌기에 맞게 재설계되었다. 그리고 포구 끝에 달린 동적포구 감지기가 라인메탈제 활강포와의 차이점이라서 눈으로 잘 보면 금방 구분이 된다.

M256에서 발사되는 M829A4 날탄과 같은 열화우라늄 관통자를 가진 포탄은 KE 기준으로 관통력이 800mm 이상 나올 것으로 보고 있다. 물론 미제 탄약이 120mm 포탄 중에서도 가장 강한 축에 들어가기는 한다. 미군은 시가전을 대비해서 여전히 44구경장 M256을 고수하고 있는데 M829A4 같은 관통력이 세계 최강인 날탄을 운용하고 있어 굳이 레오파르트 2A6, K-2 흑표와 같이 포신 구경장을 늘릴 필요가 없다고 한다.

M256을 대한민국의 현대위아에서 면허 생산한 KM256이 K1A1 계열 전차의 주포로 장착되었다.

4.6. CN03 (대한민국)

국방과학연구소와 현대위아에서 2003년 면허 생산형인 KM256 활강포를 국산화로 대체하기 위해서 개발된 활강포로 K-2 흑표의 주포인 55구경장 CN08의 개발에도 영향을 준 것으로 보인다. CN03 활강포는 현재 KM256을 대체하여 현대위아에서 제조되며 K-1A1, K-1A2 전차 주포로 운용 중이다.

M1A1/A2 등장 당시 날탄인 M829는 당시 독일강점기를 상징하는 레오2A5 DM33 날탄과 비등비등한 수준이라 아리에테, 르클레르 고관통 날탄, 에이브 계열의 장갑재 비고증화 억까를 제외하고는 M1A2 한정으로 곧 이어진 기동력 및 방호력 고증화로 버프를 받아 화력이나 기동력 방어력 모두 2A5급이라 준수했었다, 그러나 20년도 말에 독일이 DM53 쓰는 레오2A6를 받으면서 관통 인플레로 만년 탑랭인 M1A2가 모가지 블랙홀에 DM33급 M829 날탄에 머물러 한동안 또 다시 억까를 당했으나 거듭된 패치로 M829A1, M829A2를 새로 받아 DM53 급으로 화력이 비슷해졌다. 다만 T-90M 나올때 파편 방지대 패치로 레오2A5 이상급 계열, T-90M이 버프를 받은 반면 에이브 계열은 되려 너프를 먹었으나 풀업 에이스 승무원 기준 5초 장전으로 타협을 보게 되었다.
