2014년 9월 30일에 발매된 아리아나 그란데와 The Weeknd의 싱글. 아리아나 그란데의 정규 2집 앨범 <My Everything>의 9번째 수록곡이기도 하다. 빌보드 핫 100에서 7위를 달성하여, 듀엣으로 함께한 The Weeknd의 첫 번째 Top 10이자 아리아나의 5번째 Top 10 곡이 되었다. 아리아나는 2집의 첫 번째 싱글 'Problem'을 시작으로, Zedd와 함께한 'Break Free', 제시 제이와 니키 미나즈와 함께한 'Bang Bang'까지 연달아 히트시킨 직후인 상황에서 이 곡까지 히트시키며 톱스타 자리를 공고히할 수 있게 되었다. 더 위켄드는 이 곡의 히트를 통해 영화 <그레이의 50가지 그림자> OST 앨범 수록곡이자 자신의 정규 2집 <Beauty Behind The Madness> 수록곡 'Earned It'의 히트를 이끌었으며, Earned It의 성공은 이듬해 발매된 2집의 싱글 'Can't Feel My Face'와 'The Hills'를 연달아 1위로 만들며 톱스타로 성장할 수 있게 됐다.Billboard와 AllMusic, LA Times 등 무수히 많은 매체들에서 이 곡을 높게 평가하며 동시에 두 천재의 만남이라 소개하기도 했다. 또한 Complex 지에서는 '2014년 최고의 곡 50선'에서 Love Me Harder를 8위로 선정했다.
2. 일화
Republic Records에서는 컴필레이션 앨범 <Trilogy>와 1집 <Kiss Land>를 발매한 위켄드의 흥행력과 음악적 잠재력을 이미 높이 사고 있었고, 위켄드 역시 단순히 R&B 씬에서만 머물 생각이 없었다. 위켄드는 자신의 새 앨범에 들어갈 히트곡들을 만드는 것에 레이블의 도움을 요청했고, Republic 역시 흔쾌히 수락했다. 레이블은 굉장히 치밀하고 전략적으로 계산을 했는데, 당시 아리아나가 마침 프로듀서 Max Martin을 섭외하여 'Love Me Harder'의 초기 버전을 제작하고 있었던 상황이었다. 레이블은 아리아나와의 듀엣을 통해 위켄드의 대중성을 확보하고, 이후 위켄드의 2집까지 순차적으로 히트시킬 전략을 만들었다.[1] 아리아나는 위켄드의 참여에 대해 긍정적으로 평가했고, 적극적으로 그의 참여를 도왔다.[2]레이블의 연락을 받은 맥스 마틴은 위켄드에게 'Love Me Harder'의 초기 버전을 보내주었다. 그 당시를 회상한 위켄드는 "좋은 곡이긴 했지만, 너무 흔했어요. 제 스스로 그 곡을 그대로 둘 순 없었죠. 그대로 저는 그 곡을 굉장히 어둡게 바꾸었습니다."라고 말했다. 초기 버전의 가사는 지금과 같은 성관계 암시에 관한 내용이 아니었던 것으로 보인다. 마틴은 이 버전의 가사를 만족해했고 뒤이어 위켄드를 불러 곡 작업을 함께 했다.
위켄드의 히트곡 'In The Night'의 문서에도 나와있으나, 스튜디오 안에서의 곡 작업 동안에는 마틴이 위켄드에 대해 별다른 관심을 갖지 않았었다. 그러다가 관계자들 중 한 명이 마틴을 위켄드의 1집 공연에 초대했다고 한다. 공연을 본 직후 마틴은 위켄드와 작업을 해야겠다고 결심한다. 이렇게 2015년 최고의 히트곡들 중 하나인 'Can't Feel My Face'와 'In The Night'이 탄생했다.
