1. 개요

경상남도 창원시에 위치한 지역. 마산합포구와 마산회원구 지역을 뜻한다.

2. 지역 특징

2.1. 성깔 있는 마산 사람

정치적으로는 마산시내 중고등학생을 중심으로 한 3.15 의거가 일어났다. 3.15 부정선거 때 민주당 마산지부가 전국 최초로 선거 포기를 선언했고, 이에 호응한 시민들이 대대적인 시위를 하여 경찰 발포로 다수의 사상자가 나면서 4.19 혁명의 원인을 제공하기도 했다. 이어 경남대학교 학생들을 중심으로 부마민주항쟁 등의 사건을 일으켜 80년대까지는 대표적인 민주화 운동의 성지였다. 하지만 PK 지역의 대표 야당인사인 김영삼이 참여한 3당 합당 이후에는 김영삼을 따라 민주자유당 계열의 보수 세력인 국민의힘을 지지하는 성향이 강하다.

이러한 기질은 국제 관계에서도 반영되어 나타나는데 마산시의회는 시마네현의 다케시마의 날 제정에 대항하여 대마도의 날을 만들어 대마도 수복을 다짐했다. 조선 시대 이종무 장군이 대마도 정벌을 위해 마산포에서 출정한 6월 19일을 대마도의 날로 지정했다. 쓰시마섬 문서를 봐도 알 수 있듯이 명확한 근거에 기반한 것이 아니었지만 당시는 반일 감정이 극도로 차오르던 시기라 이에 대해 전국에서 동조하였다. 이 조례는 창원시 조례에도 그대로 남아 있다.

마산아재들의 야구사랑으로도 유명한 곳이다. 1980년대 (나중에 허구로 밝혀지지만) 성영재 새총 저격사건이나 용접기로 문을 뚫은 사건 등이 유명하며 아직도 여대생이 관객석에서 소주를 원샷하는 장면을 볼 수 있는 곳이다. 포털사이트에서 '성지마산' 을 검색해 보면 전투종족 마산 아재의 위엄을 볼 수 있다. 자세한 내용은 마산아재 문서로.

3. 교육

4년제 대학교 2개(경남대학교, 창신대학교 [3])가 있다.

경남대학교는 이름 때문에 거점국립대학교로 착각하는 경우가 많은데, 사립대학이다. 어쨌거나 이름 때문에 인지도는 높다. 학교 위치가 산악지대인지라 경사가 매우 험하다. 경남대학교 셔틀버스가 그 길을 내려가는 걸 보면 보는 사람이 불안해질 정도의 각도.

창신대학교는 지역 고등학생들은 기피한다. 하도 기피를 해대서, 창신대는 라디오로 대대적인 광고를 때리고 있지만 인식이 달라질 것 같지 않다.[4] 이 지역 민족학교이던 창신학교의 후신이며, 대학부와는 달리 창신고등학교는 여전히 지역 명문이다.

마산대학교는 전문대학이다. 마산대학의 전신이 전문대학이던 마산간호대학이었는지라, 간호학과는 유명한 편. 마산제일고, 마산제일여고, 마산제일여중와 함께 청강문화재단 계열이다.

예전엔 마산이 교육의 성지로 불릴 정도로 유명할 때가 있었다. 경상남도 지역이나 경상북도 지역에서 시장선거나 도지사선거, 국회의원 선거 등에서 등장하는 학력을 보면 거의 다 마산고등학교 출신이다. 그리고 금융/재계에서 날고 긴다 하는 사람들은 마산용마고등학교(구 마산상업고등학교) 출신일 정도로 두 학교는 전국구의 명성을 떨쳤던 시기가 있었다. 중간중간 마산중앙고등학교도 정치권 인사나 이름있는 군 장교를 배출하기도 했다. 문제는 마창지역 학군통합으로 인해 교육의 질이 떨어지기 시작했다는 것이다. 연합고사에 들어온 후에도 대략 1990년대 중반까지는 마산고등학교가 넘사벽급 지원률을 자랑했지만 1990년대 말에는 창신 등에 밀리기 시작했고, 결국 청강고가 제일고로 이름을 바꾸고 연합고사 라인에 들어오면서 마산지역 최고 명문의 지위는 모두 사립고등학교로 넘어가 버렸다. 그마저도 새롭게 부상한 창원에게 지위를 넘겨주면서, 마산지역 전체의 고교 교육 또한 쇠퇴했다.

마산의 고등학교가 심각하게 몰락하게 된 큰 계기가 있는데, 바로 학군의 분리. 원래 비평준화 시기 마산과 창원의 고등학교는 한 학군이었고, 때문에 공부 잘 하는 창원 학생은 마산에 있는 고교를 많이 지망했다. 그런데 창원 지역에 새 아파트를 분양하면서 창원시에서 창원시민에게만 1순위 권리를 주자, 마산시민들은 같은 생활권인 마산을 차별한다며 마산시민에게도 동등한 권리를 요구하였다. 창원시에서는 이를 거절하고 마산시의회는 그에 대한 보복으로 마산과 창원의 학군분리를 추진해 결국 이루어졌다. 학군분리 초기에는 창원의 학생들이 마산으로 위장전입을 할 정도였으나, 오히려 나중에는 뒤집어지고 말았다. 통합 후에 학군을 합친다는 선언은 있었지만 10년이 넘도록 여전히 분리된 상태다.

한때 마산학원이라는 재수학원이 교육의 성지였던 시절이 있었다. 실제로 과거에는 많은 수의 수능 고득점자를 배출하던 곳이었지만 점점 수준의 저하를 보이더니 결국은 2020년에 문 닫았다.

4. 산업

4.1. 상업의 도시, 경공업의 도시

창원에서 마산이 차지하는 산업 비중은 다소 미미하다. 그러나 일제강점기를 거치며 1960년대~1970년대 전국 7대 도시[5]가 될 만큼 컸던 역사가 있다. 진주를 비롯한 서부경남에서 생산되는 대부분의 물량이 마산항을 통해 일본으로 수출입되었기 때문이다.

즉 교역도시로서 발전했다는 얘긴데, 사실 마산의 지리적 위치상 교역의 비중은 삼국시대 초기의 포상팔국(골포국)에 거론될 정도 크다. 통일신라시대, 고려 시대와 조선 초기에도 상당히 큰 항구였다고 전하며, 쓰시마 왜구들의 빈번한 노략지가 되기도 했다. 현재의 장군동 유래가 된 장장군 전설이나, 최윤덕 장군이 북방에서 경력 쌓기 전부터 두각 나타낸 것도 다 이유가 있다. 왜구 때려잡던 동네 출생이니까 (정확히는 지금의 창원시 의창구 북면 근방)

조선 후기로 들어오며 어시장과 조운출항지로서 다시 항구의 기능을 되찾게 되었다. 일제강점기에는 '경남선'과 '마산선'의 종착역이자 일본으로 가는 부두의 교역점으로 크게 발전하게 되었으며, 1990년대 초까지만 해도 경남 제1의 도시였다. 1960년대 이래 정부의 정책으로 남동해안공업벨트를 조성하며 상대적으로 당장 쓸 수 있는 토착노동자 비율이 많고, 이미 인프라가 어느 정도 갖춰져 있던 마산에서는 (초기투자 인프라와 토지가 많이 필요한) 중화학공업 대신 경공업을 육성하게 되었는데, 울산과 여수가 현재까지도 중화학공업을 기반으로 굳건히 남아있는 데에 비해 마산은 창원으로 그 기능이 넘어가며 상대적으로 쇠락하게 된다.

4.2. 한일합섬

현재의 창원NC파크 건너편 메트로시티 터에 있었던 공장. 터닦기를 할때 박정희 대통령이 내려와 직접 챙겼을 정도로 당시로서는 국가의 명운을 건 사업이었다. 1986년 국제상사 등 옛 국제그룹 주요 계열사들을 인수하고 1990년대까지 '윈디' 등 의상브랜드를 이끌며 나름 명성을 누렸으나, 경공업의 몰락과 함께 한일합섬 마산공장도 중국발 태풍에 밀려 결국 문을 닫게 된다. 현재의 한일전산여고[6]가 그 흔적으로 남아 있다. 즉 옛 한일여자실업고등학교는 한일합섬 여직공들을 위해 지어 준 교육기관이었던 것.[7] 이들이 고향에서 한 줌씩 들고 온 풀떼를 이어 만든 게 '팔도잔디'의 유래다. 한일전산여고가 축구로 유명한 게 다 이유가 있는 거다. 현재 이곳은 창원 메트로시티가 개발되어 주거구역으로 완전히 변했다.

4.3. 마산자유무역지역(구 마산수출자유지역)

"마산에서 노동활동 = 자유무역지역 근무"라고 성급히 판단할 정도로 마산의 자본유통에서 빼놓을 수 없는 중요한 지역이다.

1970년대 박정희 정권이 본격적으로 수출위주 정책을 펴기 시작하며 국내에 두 군데 수출자유지역을 지정하였는데, 그중의 하나. 다른 한 곳은 익산에 지정되었는데 아무래도 마산이 수출입에 유리한 항구지형이다 보니 이쪽이 더 발전한 감이 있다. 어쨌거나 한일합섬과 함께 과거 마산 산업 발전의 양대 원동력이었던 곳이었다.

외국계 기업의 입주가 쉬운데다가 세제혜택 등 기업규제가 적었고, 결정적으로 당시 한국인의 임금은 현재의 인도 노동자들 수준이었기 때문에(게다가 당시 마산은 잉여인력이 드글거리는 곳이었다.) 외화벌이의 선두주자 역할을 했다. 특히 코리아타코마는 1970년 김종필 전 국무총리의 형 김종락이 미국 타코마 사와 합작설립하여 한국 최초로 객차 해외 수출(남베트남)을 하기도 했다. 1991년 한진그룹에 매각되고 1999년 한진중공업에 합병되어 마산조선소가 됐다가 2007년 성동산업에 조선소가 팔렸으나, 2008년 세계금융위기에 조선업 불황까지 겹쳐 2013년에 폐업되어 부지가 경매로 넘어갔다. 2016년에는 골리앗까지 루마니아로 팔려나갔다. 그러나 노동운동권 입장에선 '신식민주의'라고 부정적으로 평가했으며 장시간/저임금 노동으로 인해 파업이 흔했던 곳이었다. 국내 노동운동사에 언급된 바로는 1987년에 결성된 '마산창원노동조합총연합(마창노련)'의 활동 근거지이기도 했다.

1987년 노동자 대투쟁을 계기로 노동운동이 치열해져 1989년에 수출이 전년도보다 5.9%나 떨어져 수출에 차질이 생겼고, 1990년대 이후로 외국계 기업들은 임금이 더 싼 동남아로 공장을 이전하면서 경쟁력이 좀 떨어졌다. 1994년 이후에 전자 및 전기업종으로 구조가 변경되어 노키아 TMC가 한때 번영했던 시절도 있었으나 마이크로소프트가 노키아를 인수할 때 마산공장 인수를 거부하여 문을 닫게 되었다. 이 외에 한국소니전자 공장도 입주해 있지만 역시 사정이 많이 좋지 못한 편이다. 2000년 '자유무역지역의 지정 등에 관한 법률'이 제정되어 공단명도 현 명칭으로 변경됐다.

매미 등의 태풍이나 폭우가 쏟아지면 가끔 침수되기도 한다. 매립지가 많은 마산의 상습침수구역 중 하나이기도 하다.

자유 무역 지역 안에 있는 마산항 제3부두에는 크루즈선 퀸 엘리자베스 2세호가 기항한 적도 있다. 지역 뉴스에서 다루었을 정도였다.

4.4. 가포신항

마산항의 기존 제1·2부두와 중앙부두, 서항부두를 대체하는 신항구로 민자로 건설되었고 3만 톤급 다목적 부두 2선석과 2000TEU급 컨테이너 부두 2선석 등 4선석이 동시에 접안할 수 있는 총 1.3㎞의 부두시설과 40만㎡의 넓은 배후부지를 구비하고 있으며, 최첨단 하역장비를 갖추고 부두를 개장‧운영함으로써 연간 약 400만 톤 이상의 화물 처리가 가능하다.

생산시설과 연구·지원시설, 공원녹지, 도로·주차장 등 총 14만 5,205㎡로 창원 통합 이후 처음으로 분양하는 도시형 첨단산업단지이다. 현재 덴소 코리아가 입주해 있는 상태이다.

6. 여담

마산합포구에는 신포동이란 곳이 존재한다. '빨간집' 이라고 불리기도 하며 평범한 시민들이 사는 아파트 단지와 청소년 통행 제한 금지구역이 바로 딱 붙어 있는 매우 엄한 뒷골목. 그래서 '안 좋은 예'로 자주 언론에 소개가 나가기도 한다. 정말 별 생각없이 아무것도 모르고 지나가던 관광객들도 왠지 사람들의 시선이 따가워서 뻘쭘해져 돌아볼 정도로 적나라하게 인접해 있다. 사실 이렇게 된 건 일제강점기부터 있던, 부두 노동자들 상대하던 유곽이 점차 불어나는 시가지에 잡아먹힌 꼴이 되었기 때문이다. 원래는 청량리 588처럼 철로 주변의 유곽촌이었다.[8]

한편 부산에서 집창촌을 일컫는 대명사인 완월동은, 마산에서는 초 중 고등학교가 옹기종기 모여 있는 교육단지 이름이다, 그것도 명문들로만. 그리고 위에 서술한 신포동과 도로 하나 사이 끼고 사실상 붙어있다.

교통덕후들에게 인식되는 특이사항으로는, 버스 내구연한이 타 도시에 비해서 상당히 빨리 닳는다는 것이다. 아마도 소금기와 습기 찬 해풍의 영향에 높낮이가 많은 지형~~, 그리고 산복도로에서 이니셜D를 찍는 기사들~~ 때문으로 보인다.
