당시 마돈나의 남편이었던 숀 펜 주연의 영화 ost로,[1] 이전보다 성숙하고 차분한 분위기로 이미지 변신에 성공했다.

Like a Virgin후 새로운 곡을 찾고있던 마돈나는 프로듀서였던 패트릭 레너드{Patrick Leonard}와 스티브 브래이{Steve Bray}를 찾아와 세번째 앨범인 True Blue에 들어갈 곡들을 의뢰하여 쓰여진 곡이다. 레너드는 이곡을 본디 파라마운트 글로벌사의 영화 ’Fire with Fire’의 ost에 포함시키기로 기획했었고 마돈나에게 작사를 맡겼다. 이후 파라마운트사에 제출했으나 영화의 주제와 맞지 않는다고 반려했고 이에 마돈나는 그 당시 남편이던 숀 펜이 주연할 영화에 제출할것을 제안하고 영화의 감독이던 제임스 폴리에게 전달해 낙점된 것이었다.

Hot Adult Contemporary 및 Hot 100 Airplay 차트에서 모두 28위를 기록했다. 5월 10일, "Live to Tell"이 230개 중 229개로 가장 많은 라디오 방송국에서 방송된 싱글이라고 보도되었다. 7일 후, 그것은 마돈나의 7번째 연속 상위 5위 싱글이 되었다. 6월 7일 "Live to Tell"은 Hot 100 정상에 올랐으며 마돈나의 세 번째 차트 1위가 되었습니다. 이 위치에서 일주일을 보냈다.
