1982년 10월 발매된 'Everybody'는 댄스계에서 히트를 쳤다. 노래의 성공으로 레이블은 앨범 녹음을 승인했지만 가수는 Bray 또는 Kamins와 작업하지 않고 대신 워너 뮤직 그룹 프로듀서 Reggie Lucas를 선택했다. Lucas는 마돈나의 라이브 공연을 본 후 "Physical Attraction"을 썼고, 또 다른 새로운 작곡인 "Borderline"과 함께 프로젝트에 가져왔다. 앨범 작업을 하는 동안 마돈나와 프로듀서 사이에 문제가 발생했다. 그녀는 그가 노래를 원래 데모의 희박한 형식에서 벗어나고 있다고 느꼈기 때문에 그녀는 이를 승인하지 않았다. Lucas는 결국 노래를 변경하지 않고 프로젝트를 떠났다. 그런 다음 그녀는 John "Jellybean" Benitez를 데려와 나머지 트랙을 리믹스했다.
