1. 개요

서유기에 등장하는 말. 서천행에 오른 삼장법사가 늘 타고 다닌다.

2. 설명

원래는 의형제를 맺은 당태종이 삼장경을 가져오라고 격려 겸해서 한 마리 하사했었는데 용에게 잡아먹혔다.

그런데 이 용은 다름 아닌 서해용왕의 셋째 아들인 옥룡삼태자(玉龍三太子). 조상의 사당에 불을 내는 장난을 쳐서 야명주 하나도 태워먹는 대형사고[1]를 치자 빡친 아버지가 죽여버리려고 매질을 한다음 하늘에 불효죄로 고발해 공중에 포박한 것을 관음보살이 발견하여, 용서해주는 대신 경을 가지러 가는 사람을 도우라는 명을 내려서 강에 숨어 있었던 것이다. 저팔계나 사오정과는 달리 관세음보살의 명을 잘 받들어서 큰 말썽 안부리고 숨어있었고,[2] 삼장법사 일행이 나타났을 때 배가 고파서 그냥 백마만 뺏아 잡아먹었다. 나중에야 그가 기다리던 삼장법사라는 걸 알자 귀의하고, 둔갑을 하여 백마로 모습을 바꾸고 삼장법사의 자가용(…)이 된다. 일반적인 백마와 구분하기 위해 백룡마라고 부르기도 한다.

맡은 바 본업에 충실하기 때문에 삼장법사를 태우고 다니는 것 외에는 별다른 활약은 없다.그러나 황포괴 에피소드에서는 손오공이 쫓겨나고 저팔계, 사오정만이 삼장법사를 보좌하다가 그만 요괴의 수작에 걸려 삼장법사가 위기에 처했을 때 고삐를 끊고 본모습을 드러내어 요괴와 맞선 적이 있다. 워낙 상황이 절망적인데 나설 사람은 없어서 백마라도 나선 것인데, 일단 아리따운 궁녀로 둔갑해 술을 따르는 묘기를 보여줘[3] 흥을 돋군 다음 칼춤을 보여주겠다 해서 황포괴의 칼을 받아내자 칼춤을 추다 기습하지만, 저팔계와 사오정이 동시에 덤벼도 못이긴 요괴에게는 역부족이었다. 황포괴는 무기가 없어 잠시 당황했지만 만당홍이라는 엄청나게 굵은 촛대를 잡아 맞섰고, 그렇게 몇 합을 싸우다 백마가 궁여지책으로 던진 칼을 가볍게 붙잡고 촛대를 던져 백마의 허벅지를 맞췄다. 결국 부상을 입고 강물로 뛰어들어 가까스로 도망친 다음은 저팔계를 설득하여 손오공을 불러오게 권한다.

그 외에도 왕의 병을 낫게 하기 위한 약재를 제공하기 위해 오줌을 싸는 활약을 했다.(…) 사실 용마인 그가 싸는 오줌은 물고기가 맛보면 용이 되고 풀에 싸면 영지초가 되어버리는데 도를 닦는 선동(仙童)들은 그것을 캐서 불로장생의 약을 만든다고 한다. ~~삼장법사의 고기=용마의 오줌으로 재배한 버섯~~ 이런 귀한 오줌인지라 처음엔 저팔계가 오자 아예 생까고 한 방울도 내주지 않았고, 손오공이 오자 사람의 말로 어떻게 이런 속된 땅에 그 귀한 자기 오줌을 흘리냐고 항의[4]했다. 하지만 손오공이 여긴 왕국의 수도니까 속된 땅이 아니고 병치료에 쓰는 것이니 함부로 버리는 것도 아니라고 잘 설득하자 결국 온 힘을 다해 반 잔정도 오줌을 쥐어짜내준다.

결국 그 뒤로도 서천까지 쭉 삼장법사를 잘 모신 공덕으로 팔부천룡(八部天龍)이라는 직책을 받아 세계를 받치는 기둥을 감싸는 용으로 승격된다.

덧붙여 서천 가는 길의 고난이 너무 난제다 싶을 때 저팔계가 늘상 하는 말이 '짐은 갈라서 나누고 백마는 팔아서 스승님 관짝이나 사고 형은 화과산 수렴동으로 돌아가 왕노릇 하고 나는 고로장의 마누라에게 돌아가 살림이나 차리고 동생은 유사하에 돌아가 사람이나 잡아먹자'이다.[5][6]

3. 서브컬처에서의 등장

코에이의 게임 서유기에서는 황포괴와의 싸움에서 궁녀로 변신했다는 구절 때문에 여성으로 등장.

서유기를 기반으로 한 애니메이션 몽키 키드에서는 히로인 메이가 원작 서유기 백마 포지션이다.

중국 웹코믹 신마귀에서는 다시 용이 되어 속세에서 회사일 하며 살고 있지만 삼장법사랑 서역 간 일이 인상 깊었는지 종종 그때를 회상하다 말로 변하곤 한다. 참고로 여기서의 이름은 오열(敖烈).

최유기에선 서양의 드래곤을 연상시키는 작은 룡의 모습으로 등장. 그런데 변신한 모습이 말이 아니라 지프다.

이말년 서유기에선 용궁에서 깽판친 손오공에게 복수하기 위해 슈퍼용왕로봇에 탑승해 싸우는데 로봇이 박살나 하반신만 남고 그대로 조종석에 갖혀버렸다. 이에 삼장이 부처님께 가보면 뭔가 빠져나갈 방법을 알 수 있을 것이라며 합류를 권유했고 탈 것으로 합류.

갓 오브 하이스쿨에서는 여래의 제자 중 한명인 룡으로 등장.

케모노 프렌즈 3에서도 프렌즈로 등장한다. 서유기에서 말로 변신해 삼장법사를 태우고 다녔다는 이야기 때문인지 용 프렌즈보다 말 프렌즈와 비슷한 모습으로 등장하며, 대사에서도 말이 아니라 용이라는 것을 강조하고 있다. 또한 '배가 고파져서 삼장의 백마를 잡아먹었다.'는 이야기에 배가 고파지면 정신이 나가는 대식가 캐릭터가 되었다.

4. 기타

원작에서부터 존재감이 미비하다보니 서브컬처에서는 생략되는 일이 잦다. 모습 자체는 당연히 나오긴 나오지만 서사 자체는 생략된 채로 평범한 백마로 나오는 경우가 십중팔구.

[1] 여담으로 천웨이동의 서유기에선 악혼녀인 만성용왕의 딸이 백룡의 친구인 구두충에게 반해 몰래 밀회를 가진 걸 보고 분노해 깽판을 치다가 불을 지른 걸로 이야기에 살을 붙인다. 당연히 이 이야기를 들은 손오공도 백룡이 가엾다고 할 정도.[2] 저팔계는 제멋대로 데릴사위가 돼서 여자를 감금하고 난리를 친 데다가, 사오정은 삼장법사 일행이 나타나자 또 잡아먹으려 했었다.[3] 용은 물을 다스리기에 술을 엄청나게 높은 곳에서 따라도 흘러넘치지 않고 잔 크기만한 굵기로 계속 차오르게 하는 묘기쯤은 식은 죽 먹기라고 한다. 황포괴는 신통력은 더 뛰어나지만 이런 재주는 없기에 신기하게 여겨 죽이지 않고 구경했다.[4] 이조차도 손오공이 직접 마구간을 찾아갔기에 대화를 통해 오줌을 누는걸 거부하는 이유를 밝히고 손오공의 설득에 납득하여 공덕을 쌓기 위해 오줌을 눈 것이지 저팔계가 먼저 마굿간에 가서 오줌을 받아오려고 했을 때는 뻔히 쉬는 자신을 일으켜 세워서 그 밑에 오줌 담는 그릇을 대는데도 사람의 말을 할 줄 아는데도 불구하고 말 한 마디 없이 오줌을 누지 않을 뿐 '손오공을 불러와서 논의할 일이다' 정도 수준의 답변조차도 하지 않았다.[5] 용마가 고작 스승님 관짝 값밖에 안 하나 싶지만(...) 위에서 말한 궁녀로 변했던 부분에서 결국 패하고 마구간으로 돌아와서는 손오공을 찾아가라고 저팔계에게 말하니까 "아니 말이 말을 하다니(...) 큰일이 나긴 났나보다"라고 한 것이라든지, 왕의 병을 낫게 하기 위한 약재로 오줌을 쓰는 부분에서 저팔계가 "아니 무슨 말 오줌으로 약을 빚습니까" 하니까 손오공이 "네가 몰라서 그러는데 그놈이 원래 서해 용왕자였다"라고 말해준 것을 토대로 보자면 저팔계는 백마의 정체를 몰랐었다는 것을 알 수 있다. 사실 저팔계만 특별히 모르는 건 아니었고 사오정조차도 백마 소변의 효능은 모르고서 '이번만큼은 큰 형님이 장난을 치는 것임에 틀림 없구려. 큰 형님 처방을 환자가 따르면 먹는데로 설사를 지속[7]할텐데 그에 더해 말의 소변이라니 장난이 아니면 뭐란 말이오?'라고 말한다. 이 에피소드는 손오공이 두 사제를 아득히 초월하는 지식과 신통력의 소유자임을 강조하는 측면이 강하다.[6] 천웨이동 서유기에선 자초지종을 들은 저팔계가 난 고로장으로 넌 용궁으로 가는 수밖에 라고 했다.
