1. 개요

케빈 스미스(영화감독)이 제작한 블랙 코미디 영화. 1999년작.

천국에서 추방당한 두 천사가 편법을 써서 다시 천국으로 가려 하자, 메타트론이 예수의 후손인 주인공 베서니를 찾아와 두 천사들을 막으라고 지시하면서 벌어지는 소동을 그렸다.[1] 영화에서 주로 가톨릭을 중심으로 까대는 그럭저럭 가벼운 블랙 코미디지만 어째서인지 가톨릭보다 디즈니쪽에서 더 태클을 걸었다고 한다.

2. 등장인물

로키: 배우는 맷 데이먼. 죽음의 천사. 직책이 직책인만큼 높으신 분의 명령에 따라 인간을 벌하는 임무를 수행했다. 그러던 어느날 탈출기에 기록된 이집트의 장남을 몰살시킨 명령에 회의를 품고 죽음의 천사를 사직했다. 문제는 이때 기분이 꿀꿀한 나머지 친구 바틀비와 함께 술을 마셨고, 취중에 곱게 사표를 던진 게 아니라 높으신 분께 정중하게 손가락 가운데 중지를 들어보였다. 결국 둘은 지옥보다 더 끔찍한 위스콘신주로 영원히 추방 당한다. 전직이 그렇고 그런 만큼 인간을 죽이는데 전혀 거부감이 없으며 오히려 나쁜놈을 잔뜩 죽여서 지상을 청소하면 신께서 좋아할거라고 믿고 있다. 똘추기믹.[2]

바틀비(Bartleby): 배우는 벤 애플렉. 천국의 파수꾼. 로키와 함께 술을 마시고 높으신 분께 거역한 죄로 천국에서 추방당한 천사. 뉴저지의 한 성당이 100주년 기념으로 '죄를 사한다'는 교황의 축성을 받았는데, 이를 이용해 로키와 함께 천국으로 돌아가려 한다. 원래 막나가는 로키에 비해 이성적이고 인간들에 대해 호감을 갖고 있었지만 우연히 신이 천사보다 인간을 더 사랑한다는 걸 알게 되고 완전히 빡돌아버린다. 흔히 말하는 평소에 얌전한 사람이 열받으면 더 무서운 케이스.

베서니 슬로운(Bethany Sloane): 배우는 린다 피오렌티노. 낙태 전문의인 산부인과 의사인데 정작 자신은 남편과 사귀다가 임신한 아이를 낙태한 게 원인이 된 불임으로 남편과 이혼까지 해서 믿음을 잃은 가톨릭 신도다. 사실은 예수의 마지막 남은 후손[3]으로 두 타천사를 저지하는 임무를 강제로 부여받는다.[4]

메타트론: 배우는 알란 릭맨. 높으신 분의 목소리. 인간은 높으신 분의 목소리를 견딜 수가 없기 때문에 메타트론이 대신 말을 전한다고[5]. 피곤해 보이는 인상에 뭔가 불평불만이 많은 아저씨같은 차림새지만 실은 세라핌, 즉 천사 중 가장 높은 계급인 치천사다. 베서니에게 계시를 주러 등장했을 때 자신을 강간하러 온 줄 안 베서니가 잔뜩 경계하자 천사는 무성(無性)이라며 바지를 내려 맨들맨들한 그곳을 보여준다. 천사는 술을 못 마시게 되어 있다며 향기만 즐길 수 있다고 데킬라를 입에 머금었다가 게워내는 엽기적인 기행을 선보인다. 참고로 천사들이 술을 못 마시는 이유는 바로 로키와 바틀비의 선례가 있었기 때문.

제이 & 사일런트 밥(Jay & Silent Bob): 메타트론이 예언자라고 칭한 두 사람.[6] 도둑질에 쌈박질에 약까지 안 좋은 건 다 한다. 실은 감독의 데뷔작 점원들(Clerks)에서부터 등장해서 거의 모든 작품에 빠지지 않고 등장하는 마스코트적 페어. 사일런트 밥 역을 맡은 배우는 감독 본인이다. 케빈 스미스(영화감독) 항목 참고. 참고로 사일런트 밥은 묵언 수행인지 말을 하지 않다가 결정적인 순간에 한마디 한다. 껄렁껄렁한 첫 모습과는 달리 베서니와 동행하면서 은근 정이 든 듯, 글릭 추기경이 베서니를 면박하자 추기경의 골프채를 훔쳐서 지들 나름대로 복수하는 모습도 보여주고, 사일런트 밥은 후반부에 베서니가 중상을 입자 오열하면서 축 늘어진 베서니를 들고 온다.[7]

루퍼스(Rufus): 배우는 유명 코메디언 크리스 락. 예수의 13번째 제자. 그냥 시체다. 돌에 맞아 죽었는데, 예수가 죽은 뒤 2년 뒤에 다시 보자고 해놓고는 먹튀했다고, 심지어 흑인이라서 자신은 성경에선 잘렸고, 흑인인 예수가 백인으로 날조되었다고 분통을 터뜨린다. 베서니를 도와 당당히 성경에 사도로서 이름을 올리고, 천국으로 가 예수와 다시 만날 날을 기다리고 있다.

아즈라엘: 배우는 제이슨 리. 악마. 로키와 바틀비를 유혹한 흑막이다. 원래는 천사로 뮤즈였는데, 루시퍼가 천국에 쳐들어와 전쟁이 벌어졌을 때 중립을 지킨 죄로 지옥으로 추방당했다. 지옥 생활을 견디다 못해 도주해서, 높으신 분의 섭리에 모순을 일으켜 만물을 멸할 작정이었다. 악마라 성물이 아니면 인간의 힘으로는 죽일 수 없는 몸이었는데 어이없이 골프채에 맞아 죽었다. 다름 아닌 추기경이 쓰던 골프채라서.[8] 참고로 말하자면 아즈라엘 본인이 골프채로 한번 쳐보라면서 옷을 벗으며 실컷 도발하다가 맞아 죽었다.[9]

세렌디피티(Serendipity): 배우는 셀마 헤이엑. 원래 뮤즈였다가 3년 전 사표를 내고 지상으로 내려왔다. 그런데 뮤즈는 타인에게 영감을 줘서 대박을 터뜨리게 만들지만 정작 자기자신에겐 해당사항이 없기 때문에 그저 싸구려 클럽에서 스트리퍼로 보내고 있다. 뮤즈기 때문에 무성이지만 여자의 몸으로 행세하는데, 베서니가 "아까 제이가 네 슴가에 들이대는 거 봤는데 여자가 아니라고?"라고 묻자 베서니를 보더니 "너라면 슴가가 여성의 필수조건은 아닌 거 잘 알텐데"라고 드립쳐서 베서니를 관광보낸다. 처음 만난 인상과는 달리 깡다구도 은근 좋고 베서니를 잘 이끌어주는 베서니 일행의 공신.

높으신 분: 배우는 여성 록 가수로 유명한 앨라니스 모리셋. 인간의 몸을 빌어서 인간 세상을 구경하다가 아즈라엘의 부하들에게 습격당한다. 그런데 가사상태에 빠졌기 때문에 인간 몸속에서 계속 머무르게 된다. 마지막에 베서니가 인공심폐기를 떼자 본모습이 나오는데... 여성이다. 그리고 성격이 좋게 말하면 어린아이처럼 순진하고 나쁘게 말하면 완전 4차원이다.

이그나티우스 글릭 추기경(Cardinal Ignatius Glick): 배우는 유명 코메디언 조지 칼린 [10]. 신자가 떠나는 오늘날 가톨릭의 위기상황을 극복하기 위해 이런저런 노력을 하고 있다.

루퍼스: 예수도 흑인인데 나만 성경에서 잘렸어. 왜냐하면 나는 12명의 백인 자식들로 메꿀 수 있지만, 예수가 없으면 신약성경이란 게 존재하기 힘들잖아? 그러니까 예수의 피부색을 좀 바꿔놓은 거지.[11]

루퍼스: 안티오크의 사람들이랑 똑같은 말을 하네. 그리고 그 다음에 그들은 나를 석살(stoning)했지.
베서니: 순교당한 건가요?
루퍼스: 그렇게 볼 수도 있지. 다르게 표현하자면 졸라 큰 돌덩이에 쳐맞아 뒈진 거고. 백인들은 항상 좋은 부분만 골라 듣고 해. 영생, 주님의 곁으로 등등. 하지만 그런 말을 하는 예수가 흑인이란 걸 안 순간부터 난리가 난거지. 그게 바로 위선이란 거야. 흑인은 내 스테레오를 훔칠 수는 있지만 내 구원자가 될 수는 없다, 이런 사상인 거지. (루퍼스가 사일런트 밥 쪽을 유심히 쳐다본다)
루퍼스: 그 해쉬브라운 먹을거냐?

베서니: 하지만 예수는 독생자잖아요? 마리아는 동정녀였고요.
루퍼스: 마리아는 동정녀로 예수를 낳긴 했지. 하지만 남편은 있었잖아. 넌 건장한 남 녀 둘이 결혼한 사이인데 성관계 한번 안 한다는 게 말이 된다고 생각해?[12] 남자의 손길 없이 아이를 잉태했다, 그런 건 믿음이 있다면 넘어갈 수도 있지. 하지만 결혼한 건강한 두 남녀가 한번도 붕가붕가를 안했다고? 그걸 믿는 놈은 골이 빈 거라고!

베서니: 그래서 뭘 말하고 싶은 거에요, 루퍼스?
루퍼스: 네 혈관에 흐르는 피가 예수의 피와 염색체 한 두어개 정도는 공유할 거라는 거지. 넌 예수의 증증증증증증증증조조카야.
제이: (대마를 빤 상태로) 그러면......베서니는 흑인 혼혈이란 건가요?

로키: 대학살은 인간이 할 수 있는 활동 중 최고로 힘을 많이 소비하는 일이라고. 축구를 제외하고.

(사람들이 꽉 찬 엘레베이터에 들어가면서)
로키: 이야~! 그럼 지구에서 보내는 마지막 4일이 되겠네. 성기만 있었으면 딸이나 칠 텐데. 그냥 그 다음으로 좋은 거 할까.
바틀비: 그게 뭔데?
로키: 사람이나 좀 죽이지 뭐. (옆에있는 여자가 놀라서 커피를 뿜어냄) 참 나. 너 말고.

메타트론: 난 너에게 성전의 임무를 부여하기 위해 왔다.
베서니: 모르시나본데, 전 낙태 클리닉에서 일해요.
메타트론: 노아는 주정뱅이였어. 근데 뭘 해냈지? 그리고 너더러 방주를 지으란 것도 아니야.

메타트론: 그래서 주님은 다시는 로키와 바틀비가 천국에 발을 딛지 못할 것이라고 선언했지.
베서니: 지옥으로 보내졌나요?
메타트론: 아니, 더 끔찍한 곳. 위스콘신.

베서니: 그분은 지내보면 어때요?
메타트론: 주님? 외롭지만 꽤 웃긴 분이셔. 유머감각이 탁월해. 섹스를 예로 들어보자. 너희들이 붕가붕가하는 도중에 짓는 우스꽝스러운 표정보다 더 웃긴 건 없다고.
베서니: 천국은 섹스를 농담거리로 생각하나요?
메타트론: 내가 알기로는 여기서도 크게 다르진 않은 것 같은데.

루퍼스: 주님은 여전히 인류를 사랑해. 하지만 그의 이름을 걸고 행해지는 여러 가지 것들이 맘이 아픈 거지; 전쟁, 차별, TV를 통한 선교. 하지만 그가 제일 실망한 건 종교간의 분파야. 그분의 말에 따르면, 인류는 좋은 아이디어를 갖고 안타깝게도 그 위에 믿음이라는 구조를 덮어씌웠지.
베서니: 믿음을 갖는 게 좋은 게 아니란 건가요?
루퍼스: 그냥 아이디어만 갖고 있는 게 낫다고 생각해. 아이디어는 늘 바꿀 수 있어. 믿음을 바꾸긴 더 복잡하잖아?

4. 여담

천사인 로키와 바틀비, 그리고 메타트론은 늘 같은 디자인의 후드티를 입고 있는데, 이 후드는 흔히 천사를 묘사할 때 쓰이는 머리 위의 헤일로를 상징한다.

케빈 스미스 감독은 가톨릭교회에서 많은 불만을 가지고 상영 반대 시위를 하고 있다는 소식을 듣자 몰래 시위하는 곳에 가서 장난으로 동참했다. 얼굴을 알아본 기자가 인터뷰를 요구하여 해당 장면이 뉴스에도 방송됐다. 물론 인터뷰에선 자신은 감독이 아니라고 잡아뗐고 기자가 이름을 묻자 같이 시위에 나간 친구의 이름인 브라이언 존슨이라고 거짓말을 했다.원본 번역본

스미스 감독은 자신의 영화에 앨런 릭먼같은 배우가 출연하는 것에 큰 의의를 뒀는지, 제이 역할을 맡은 제이슨 뮤스에게 이번 촬영 땐 개지랄 떨지 말고 똑바로 하라고 신신당부를 했다.[13] 그리고 뮤스는 촬영 전까지 자신의 대사뿐만이 아니라 배역 전원의 대사를 외워버리는 정신나간 짓을 수행해서 스미스를 벙찌게 했다. "What are you, fucking Rain Man?

앨런 릭먼은 스미스의 전작인 체이싱 에이미(Chasing Amy)를 보고 팬이 되어서 스미스와 함께 일하고 싶었다고 한다. 각본을 읽어본 후, 릭먼은 "이 각본 그대로 갈 거냐"와 "내 날개 진짜 소품이냐 아님 CGI냐"라는 질문과 함께 출연을 승낙했다고...

스미스와 베서니 역의 린다 피오렌티노는 뭔가 잘 안 맞았는지, 스미스는 이후 인터뷰에서 베서니 역할을 피오렌티노에게 준 게 실수였다고 말했다. 당연히 둘은 협업하지 않았지만, 스미스가 2018년에 심근경색을 앓은 후에야 앙금을 털어낼 수 있었다고 한다.

[1] 두 천사를 막아야 하는 이유는, 주님이 두 천사는 다시는 천국에 발을 딛지 못할 것이라고 선언했기 때문이다. 우주는 "주님은 틀리지 않는다"라는 기본전제를 깔고 돌아가는데, 만약 그 기본전제가 참이 아니게 되면 주님이 만든 모든 게 무로 돌아간다는 것.[2] 그래서 나중에 토르: 라그나로크에 극중극에서 로키역 으로 등장한다.[3] 예수의 까마득히 먼 조카, 즉 예수의 형제의 후손이다.[4] 말을 듣고 어이없어하면서 "전 낙태 전문의인데요"라고 하자 메타트론은 "노아는 주정뱅이였는데 뭘 해냈는지는 알고 있지? 그리고 너더러 방주를 만들라고 하는 건 아니야"라고 태연하게 대답한다.[5] 메타트론 왈, "그걸 몰라서 아담을 다섯 번이나 만들어야 했지."[6] 영어 단어를 사용한 말장난인데, 예언자를 뜻하는 prophet은 이득을 뜻하는 profit과 동음이의어다. 둘이 베서니를 구해줬다가 질색하면서 갈길 가려고 하자 제이가 빡쳐서 주절주절대다가 "make myself a profit"이라고 한 말을 우연히 듣고 어이없어 하면서 둘을 다시 부르는 베서니가 포인트.[7] 물론 제이의 경우 그냥 섹스 한 번 하고 싶어하는 면이 강하지만...[8] 정확히는 순수한 믿음의 힘이 담겼기 때문. 골프채가 성물이고 거기에 참된 힘이 담겨있다는 순수한 믿음을 가지고 휘둘렀기 때문에 아즈라엘이 한 방에 죽고 만다.[9] 후반에 주인공 일행을 포박한 상태라 굉장히 유리한 상황이었는데, 사일런트 밥이 골프채로 치라고 베서니에게 눈짓을 하자 그걸 본 아즈라엘이 그걸로 내가 죽겠냐며 도발한다. 그리고...[10] 참고로 무신론자이다[11] 이미 고고학적, 학술적으로도 가능성이 높은 것으로 간주되는 얘기지만 당연하게도 실존했던 예수가 금발벽안 같은 게르만계 비슷한 백인이 아니라고 한다. 다만 이스라엘, 레바논, 시리아 같은 레반트 지역은 아라비아 반도 및 이집트 같은 타 중동 지역과는 다르게 스페인인, 포르투갈인, 이탈리아인, 그리스인, 터키인 같은 남유럽계 비슷한 외모가 많은 편이다. 이 때문인지 남유럽인과 비슷한 레바논이나 시리아계, 팔레스타인계의 레반트 지역에서 이주해 온 기독교 계통 이민자가 많은 브라질과 아르헨티나, 칠레, 멕시코 등 라틴아메리카에서는 이들을 그냥 백인 취급한다. 즉 한국인이 생각하는 백인은 아니지만, 그렇다고 흑인도 아니다.[12] 뭐... 성경에서도 이미 창세기에서 인간을 창조한 신이 "너희는 나아가 자손을 낳고 땅 위에 번성하라"라고 하기는 한다.[13] 클럭스 촬영 당시 뮤스가 긴장해서 촬영이 지연된 사건 등이 있어서 뮤스도 할 말이 없긴 하다.
