1. 개요

구글에서 서비스 중인 유튜브의 유료 요금제. 2015년 10월 21일 처음 발표되었고, 2016년 12월 6일에 미국, 호주, 뉴질랜드, 멕시코에 이어 한국에는 전 세계 다섯 번째로 출시되었다.

단, 한국 외 대부분의 지역에서는 YouTube Music이 광고를 포함한 무료 서비스이므로, 타 지역에서는 YouTube Music 광고 제거가 된다.[2][3]

Google Play Music에서 이어받은 기능으로, PC 화면 상단 우측에 '음악 업로드'라는 버튼이 있다. 이 버튼을 누르면 사용자가 자신이 가진 음악파일을 직접 업로드하여 자신의 계정에 연결된 모든 기기에서 들을 수 있다.[11] 다만, 이 기능은 아직 한국에서 지원되지 않으며, VPN 사용하여 업로드한 후 다시 한국 IP로 접속시 들을 수 없는 노래로 표시된다.[12]

2023년 12월 인상 후 가격은 11,990원(VAT 포함). 2020년 출시 당시 가격은 종전까지의 YouTube Premium의 가격인 8,690원(VAT 포함)이었다.

YouTube Premium 애프터파티 제공

뮤직비디오 등을 업로드하면 그 비하인드 등을 Premium 독점으로 시청 가능하게 제공해주는 기능이다.

기존의 유튜브 레드를 대체한다. 서비스 명칭에서 느껴지는 이미지와는 달리 프리미엄이 뮤직 프리미엄의 상위호환 서비스이다.

iOS 사용자도 브라우저 웹사이트에서 결제하면 동일한 가격으로 결제할 수 있다.

한국 서비스 이원화 이후 가격이 인상되었다. 2020년 9월 2일 요금 인상[19]은 그 전에 가입했다면 가격이 유지되었으나, 2023년 12월 인상의 경우 기존 가입자에게도 소급 적용 되었다. 다만 기존 가입자는 1개월[20]간 기존 가격으로 유지가 가능하다고 한다. YTN

한국에서는 '본인이 만 19세 이상임을 확인하고' 라는 문구가 들어가있지만 실제로는 결제 과정에서 성인인증을 요구하지 않으므로 19세 미만도 구독할 수 있다.

미국 기준 $13.99[21], 일본은 ¥1,280(약 ￦11,200)(iTunes에서 결제시 ¥1,550 부과.) 국가에 따라 가족 요금제[22], 학생 요금제[23]가 있기도 하다.

2020년 하반기~2021년쯤 유튜브 프리미엄에 YouTube 기능 실험 대상 참여 가능이 추가되었다.[24]

가끔씩 구글이 프리미엄 이용자에게 다른 혜택을 주는 경우도 있다. 예를 들어서 4,990원 이하의 채널 멤버십에 무료로 가입할 수 있게 해준다거나[25] 5만원 상당의 구글 홈 미니를 뿌린다거나. 물론 이는 다 기간 제한이다.

2.2.1. 유튜브 오리지널

유튜브에서 자체 제작한 영상들을 볼 수 있다. 대부분 영어로 된 드라마(자막 있음), 다큐나 애니메이션 위주이지만, 한국어 영상도 조금씩 추가되고 있다. 2021년 3월에 8부작 다큐 K-POP Evolution이 공개되었다. 채널 링크

단, 주의할 점이 유튜브 오리지널 감상시 만 나이를 입력하지 않은 계정이면 재생이 안될 수 있다. 만약 본인이 프리미엄에 가입하였는데도 불구하고, 오리지널을 시청하려고 할 때 풀영상이 아닌 예고영상이 나온다면, 나이를 체크해봐야 한다.

2019년을 끝으로 유튜브 오리지널 드라마 제작 중단을 발표했다. 그리고 현 시점 기준으로는 예전에는 프리미엄만 시청 가능하고 일반 유저에게는 티저만 나왔지만, 지금은 일반 유저도 광고가 붙지만 시청할 수 있다.

결국, 2022년에 아동용을 제외하고 사업을 철회하였다. #

2022년 8월 14일, 새로운 OTT 마켓플레이스를 준비하고 있다는 기사가 나왔다. # 내부적으로 '채널스토어'라는 이름을 사용하며 2022년 가을에 서비스할 예정이라고 한다.

2.3. 유튜브 프리미엄 라이트(Lite)

유튜브 뮤직 관련 기능은 일체 제거하고, 오직 영상에서 광고가 제거되는 플랜이다. 단, 쇼츠 및 음악 관련 영상과 검색, 탐색 시에는 광고가 표시될 수 있다고 명시되어 있다. 이로 인해 다른 핵심 기능들도 제거하여 유튜브 프리미엄 구독을 유도하는 것 아니냐는 비판을 받는다.

미국, 독일 등 일부 국가에서 서비스 중이며 한국도 공정거래위원회의 심사를 계기로 2025년 6월 이후 서비스를 개시할 예정이다.

백그라운드 재생, 오프라인 저장 등 핵심적인 기능이 대거 빠진 반쪽짜리 멤버십을 타협안으로 들고 온 점에 대해 비판이 있었다. #

2025년 11월 27일, 공정거래위원회는 유튜브가 신청한 동의의결이 승인되었음을 발표하고 프리미엄 라이트 요금제에 대한 상세 정보를 공개했다. #

비음악 콘텐츠(영상)[26]의 영상 중단형 광고 제거, 백그라운드 재생 및 오프라인 저장 기능을 지원한다. 비음악 콘텐츠 중 음악 권리자가 권리를 보유하는 콘텐츠에 대해서는 백그라운드 재생 및 오프라인 저장 기능이 제공되지 않는다.

원칙적으로 의결서 송달일로부터 90일 이내에 상품을 출시하여야 하나 구글은 2025년 연내 출시가 이루어질 수 있도록 노력한다는 입장이라고 한다. 또한 구글은 일부 소비자를 대상으로 유튜브 라이트 상품을 출시한 후, 일정 기간(4~6주) 시범 운영을 거쳐 국내 모든 소비자들에게 출시할 예정이라고 밝혔다.

미국 구독료는 $7.99이며, 한국 내 가격은 안드로이드와 웹은 8,500원, iOS는 10,900원이다.

4. 여담

2015년에 출시했을 때는 이름이 '유튜브 레드'였고 2018년 6월부터 ‘유튜브 프리미엄’으로 바뀌었다. 기존에는 한국 한정으로 유튜브 뮤직 이용이 프리미엄에 함께 묶음으로 제공되는 서비스였으나, 2020년 9월 2일부터 유튜브 뮤직 서비스가 유료화되면서 해외의 방식과 마찬가지로 유튜브 뮤직만 제공하는 서비스와 프리미엄과 같이 제공하는 서비스로 가격에 차등을 주어 이원화되었다.

결제일을 변경하려면 무조건 일시 중단을 눌러서 활성화를 중지하고 구독을 해지한 후 원하는 날짜에 다시 결제하는 방법밖에 없다.

이 서비스가 출시되면서 프리미엄 서비스를 사용하지 않는 이용자의 불편이 늘어났다. 영상 도중 광고 송출 [28]이 잦아지고, 스킵 불가능 광고(범퍼 광고)도 늘어났다. 2018년 8월 27일경에는 유튜브 홈 화면에 유튜브 프리미엄 무료 광고 영상이 많이 뜨는 일이 있었다.다음 날부터 수는 적어졌지만 계속해서 유튜브 프리미엄 유료 영상이 뜨고 있었지만 9월부터는 다시 뜬다. 그리고 2019년 5월 24일부터 1/4이 유튜브 프리미엄 홍보광고로 나온다. 게다가 유튜브 앱을 실행할 시 백그라운드 프로세스가 없을 때 열면 거의 반드시 떠서 라이트 유저들은 광고가 너무 지나친 탓에 엄청 짜증나고 일일이 누르기 귀찮다고 한다. 때문에 업데이트를 제거해서 2018년 초기 버전으로 되돌리는 사람들도 늘어나고 있으며 유튜브 광고 차단에 최적화된 Adblock Plus 등의 사용량이 증가했다.

여럿이 협업하여 만든 곡의 경우 아티스트 보기를 누르면 이름이 먼저 적힌 아티스트의 페이지로 이동한다.

일부 외국 가수의 경우 일부 한국어로 번역되는데 오히려 정확하지 못하다. 일례로 Pomme가 완전히 다른 뜻인 "지혜"로 번역되는 경우가 있다.(...)[29]

2023년 기준 유튜브의 음악 단가는 곡 재생당 평균 0.5센트~0.7센트로 Apple Music(1센트)보다는 낮지만 Spotify(0.3센트~0.5센트)보다는 오히려 높다. #

유튜브 뮤직도 이퀄라이저를 지원하기 시작했다.[30]

유저들이 점차 프리미엄 서비스를 이용하게 되자, 광고료를 받지 못하게 된 유튜버들이[31] 본인의 영상 그 자체에 직접 스폰서 광고를 삽입한다. 그리하여 유튜브 프리미엄의 광고로부터의 자유 기능이 점점 무의미해지고 있다. 그러나 이에 대한 반론도 있다. 이러한 경우에는 광고를 바로 넘길 수 있고 정말 악질 유튜버가 아니라면 영상을 시청하기 힘들 정도로 광고를 도배하는 일은 많지 않다. 또한 '유튜브 광고'를 표시하지 않으려는 목적으로 유튜브 프리미엄을 사용하는 것이지, 영상 내부의 광고까지 가릴 목적으로 결제하는 것이 아니다. 유튜브 영상 내부에 유료 광고가 포함되어 있으며 스트리머가 시청자들에게 표시하도록 설정한 경우 플레이어 왼쪽 아래 '유료 광고 포함'이라고 표시되며, 이러한 영상도 마찬가지로 유튜브 광고를 포함할 수 있고 영상 내부의 광고는 바로 넘길 수 있다. 그리고 이러한 내부광고에 대응하기 위해 SponsorBlock이라는 것이 생겼다.

구글에서 한 번씩 유튜브 프리미엄 회원들에게 공짜로 구글 기기들을 선물하는 이벤트를 여는데, 2020년에만 구글 네스트 미니라든지 크롬캐스트 울트라, Stadia 게임 컨트롤러 등을 프리미엄 회원들 중 신청자에게 그냥 무료로 배송해줬다. 이 정도면 2020년 한해 동안 내는 유튜브 프리미엄 결제 금액을 다 보상받을 수 있는 수준. 보통 이벤트가 공고 며칠 전까지 가입자에 한해서 기기를 증정하는 것이기 때문에, 타이밍만 잘 맞추면 오히려 더 싼 가격에 기기들을 살 수 있는 셈. 물론 구글 관계자가 아닌 이상 이를 예측할 수는 없지만. 그러나 혹시 인도나 아르헨티나 우회결제를 했다면 이 선물은 받을 수 없다. 다만, 이러한 혜택은 2020년 이후로는 따로 소식이 없는 상태. 아무래도 코로나 시국이였을 때이기에 일시적으로 했을 이벤트 였을 가능성이 높다.

2021년 10월경 장기 멤버십 대상으로 Google one 클라우드 스토리지 100GB 3개월 무료쿠폰을 주었다.

2022년 1월 19일부터 가격 표시 방법이 VAT(부가가치세) 포함 가격으로 변경되었다.[32]

(인터넷이나 매장에서)갤럭시나 아이폰을 구매할 경우 판촉 행사로 Youtube Premium 1개월 무료 이용권을 주기도 한다.

미성년자도 체크카드 결제를 통해 보호자 동의 없이 프리미엄 구독이 가능하다.[33]

오프라인 저장 기능은 오류가 많다. '완료되지 않은 영상을 찾는 중'이라는 알림이 지속적으로 뜨는 오류는 유명하고, 이미 저장이 다 끝난 영상을 나중에 다시 저장하기도 하는 등[34] 불편한 점이 굉장히 많다. 정작 이 문제에 대해 문의하면 유튜브 프리미엄 기한이 끝나지 않았는지, 혹은 다른 기기에서 저장된 영상들이 있는지 확인해보라는 등 이상한 답변만 와서 악명이 높다.[35]

유튜브 프리미엄 가입자에 한해 고음질 오디오 스트리밍을 지원하기 시작했다.

유튜브는 다른 구글 서비스와 마찬가지로 웹에서 고객센터를 운영하고 있으며, 도움말과 게시판을 통해 질문을 게시할 수 있다. 유튜브 프리미엄 가입자에게는 채팅 및 이메일 상담 기능이 추가로 제공되며, 프리미엄 계정으로 고객센터에 접속할 경우 해당 메뉴를 확인할 수 있다.

4.1. 우회 결제 이슈

일부 유저들이 인도, 아르헨티나, 튀르키예, 나이지리아 등 구독료가 저렴한 국가의 VPN을 이용해 우회 결제를 하는데 이를 지칭하여 인터넷상에서는 명예 인도인, 명예 아르헨티나인 등으로 불렀다. 하지만 2024년 2월 25일부터 구글이 유튜브 프리미엄 우회 단속이 본격화되었고, 6개월 동안 해당 국가에 로그인하지 않을 경우 멤버십 정지 조치가 내려지면서 우회구매가 사실상 무력화되었다.[36] # 6개월 안에 해당 국가 IP로 로그인만 하면 우회가 가능하다는 주장이 있으나 확인된 사실은 아니다. 멤버십을 가입한 국가 외의 국가에서 로그인한 기록이 있어도 제재를 할 수 있기 때문이다.

유튜브의 이러한 노력에도 불구하고 아직도 새로 우회결제를 시도할 경우 국가에 따라 우회결제가 가능하기는 하여 완벽히 우회결제를 차단하지는 못한 상태이다.

한국 기준 2024년 10월 17일부터 아예 카드 제한을 걸어 해당 국가에서 발급받은 카드로만 결제가 된다는 메세지가 뜨고 있다. 11월부터 적용되며, 해당 국가에 거주하더라도 해당 국가에서 발급한 카드가 없으면 결제가 불가능하다. 위에서 언급된 해당 국가 IP로 로그인한 사람들도 동일한 팝업이 뜬다. 다만 해당 제한 이후에도 무슨 일인지 일본 등 가격이 거의 비슷한 곳에서 결제할 경우 결제가 정상적으로 처리되는 것을 보아 인근 지역에서 결제하는 것은 문제가 되지 않는 것으로 보인다.

최근에는 유튜브 프리미엄 우회 방식으로 구독 공유 계정 서비스를 구매하거나, 일명 '파티장' 개념의 계정 공유 서비스가 다수 등장하였다. 이러한 서비스는 여러 명이 함께 프리미엄 계정을 사용하는 방식으로, 기존 유튜브 프리미엄 요금보다 50% 이상 저렴한 비용으로 이용 가능한 점이 장점으로 작용하고 있다. 특히 해외 결제 또는 가족 계정 등록 우회를 통해 실제 가입 국가와는 다른 국가로 우회 접속하여 가입하는 형태가 많으며, 이를 통해 가격을 절감하려는 수요도 꾸준히 증가하는 추세이다.

이래도 우회 구매가 잦았는지 2025년 9월 26일부터 약관을 개정하여 단속을 강화하려는 움직임이 보이고 있다. # 가장 큰 변화는 ‘지역 제한’ 조항인데 IP 주소를 통해 이용자가 어느 지역에서 가입했는지를 면밀하게 확인할 수 있다고 한다. 해당 국가 이외의 지역에서 유튜브 프리미엄 서비스 접속이 4주 이상 이뤄지거나 가상 사설망(VPN)을 통해 가입 국가에 대해 허위 진술을 시도하는 경우 서비스 약관 위반에 해당되며 이 경우 유튜브 프리미엄이 일시 중지되거나 해지될 수 있다고 경고했다. 이 변경점으로 인해 VPN을 통한 지역 제한이 걸린 콘텐츠 이용이 사실상 불가능해질 것으로 예상되었고, 실제로 9월 26일 이후부터 단속을 강화하여 아르헨티나와 인도 쪽으로 우회하는 방법이 개정 후부터 막히기 시작했다. #
