1. 개요

스웨덴의 팝 그룹 ABBA의 일곱 번째 스튜디오 앨범.

비에른과 아그네사 커플이 이혼하고 나서 나온 앨범이어서 이전보다 분위기가 조금 조용하고 어두워졌다. 전 세계적으로 디스코 열풍도 끝나면서 전작에서 대다수를 차지하던 디스코 곡의 비중이 줄고, Super Trouper, Lay All Your Love on Me 정도만이 남았다. 차트 성적으로 보면 2곡(The Winner Takes It all, Super Trouper)의 UK 차트 싱글 1위 곡을 배출해 아바의 마지막 전성기를 알린 앨범이라 할 수 있다.

2. 여담

영국 판매량이 엄청나서 1980년 영국에서 가장 많이 팔린 앨범이 되기도 했다.
1983년에 미국의 애틀랜틱 레코드에서 처음으로 CD가 발매되었고, 1980년대 중반에는 폴리도어에서도 발매했다.
이 앨범의 마지막 트랙인 "The Way Old Friends Do"는 발매 한 해 전인 1979년 콘서트 투어때 녹음된 라이브 음원이다.
한국 노래방에서 유달리 많은 사랑을 받는 앨범. 물론 전 세계적으로 큰 성공을 거둔 Super Trouper, The Winner Takes It All은 있어도 이상하지 않은 곡이지만 주요 국가에서 싱글 컷도 되지 않은 Andante, Andante, 영어 버전으로는 1999년에서야 싱글로 발매된 Happy New Year도 금영과 태진 모두 실려있다. 여기에 영화 맘마미아에 수록된 아만다 사이프리드와 도미닉 쿠퍼가 부른 버전이 실린 것도 합하면 앨범에서 무려 5곡이나 수록된 격이다.

앨범과 동명의 곡. 본래 앨범에 수록하려던 곡 Put on Your White Sombrero가 빠지고 그 자리를 채우려 땜빵(?)으로 만들어진 노래라는 비화가 있다. 주인공은 공연에 선 가수로, 무대에 서기 힘들었지만 '너'가 있어서 힘내서 공연할 수 있다는 뜻의 노래이다. 여담으로 제목 Super Trouper의 의미는 콘서트에서 사용하는 조명 이름이라고 한다. 뮤직비디오는 아바 역대 뮤비 중 가장 많은 인원이 투입된 것이라고 한다. 영국에서 9번째이자 마지막으로 차트 1위에 올랐으며, 그 외에 네덜란드, 벨기에, 서독, 아일랜드, 코스타리카에서 1위를 기록했다. 빌보드에서는 45위. 유독 호주에서 인기가 저조해 77위를 기록했으며, 때문에 아바 최고의 히트곡만 모아둔 컴필레이션 ABBA Gold 호주 판에서는 이 곡 대신 Ring Ring이 수록되었다.
뮤지컬 및 영화 맘마미아에도 수록. 소피의 처녀 파티에서 도나, 타냐, 로지가 축하 공연으로 선보이는 곡이다. 영화 맘마미아 2에선 전 출연진이 총출동해서 커튼콜 곡으로 쓰였다.

Dancing Queen을 누르고 영국인이 뽑은 아바 최고의 곡 1위에 꼽힌 명곡. 아그니타와 비요른 커플이 이혼하고 그 감정이 반영된 곡이라는 루머가 있는데, 일단 비요른은 공식적으로는 부정한 바 있으나 비요른이 이 곡의 가사를 쓰면서 술을 엄청나게 마셨다는 사실은 잘 알려져 있으며, 그렇게 만취한 상태에서 2시간 만에 써 내려갔다고 한다. 결과적으로 비요른이 가장 빠르게 작사한 곡이라고 한다. 더더욱 웃긴 것은 정작 당시 비요른은 새 여자친구이자 훗날 두 번째 아내가 되는 레나와 사귀고 있었다. 즉 새 여자친구가 생긴 전 남편에게 전 아내가 애절하게 하는 말을, 바로 그 전 남편이 가사로 써서 전 아내에게 부르도록 한 셈이다. 둘 다 평범한 사람들이 아니다.
이별한 커플을 싸움의 승자와 패자에 비유한 가사가 인상적이지만 비요른과 아그니타는 "이혼에 승자와 패자는 없다. 특히 아이가 있을 때에는"이라고 증언했다. 뮤직비디오는 스웨덴의 서쪽 해얀에서 촬영했다고 한다. 아무튼 심금을 울리는 멜로디와 가사가 어우러져 발매 당시에도 큰 인기를 끌어 영국 차트에서 3년 만에 1위를 안겨줬고, 그 외에 벨기에, 네덜란드. 아일랜드, 남아프리카 공화국에서 1위를 거두었다. 심지어 아바가 상대적으로 부진하던 미국 빌보드에서도 8위를 기록했다. 워낙 명곡이어서 커버한 가수도 꽤 많은데, 카일리 미노그, 수잔 보일, 존 배로먼(?) 등이 있다.
곡 퀄리티와 인기 때문인지, 뮤지컬 및 영화 맘마미아에서도 극 클라이맥스를 장식한다. 도나가 결혼식 준비를 마친 소피를 방에서 내보내고 샘이 찾아오자 헤어진 뒤 20년 동안 힘들었던 일과 감정을 토해내는 곡으로 등장한다. 파워풀한 가창력과 섬세한 감정 표현이 요구되는 곡이라 이 곡이 끝나면 관객들이 기립박수를 칠 만큼 뮤지컬에서 큰 역할을 하는 곡이다. 드라마 “베터 콜 사울”에서도 큰 비중을 차지하는 곡이다.

멤버들이 스코틀랜드 상류사회에서 경험했던 것들을 토대로 만든 곡이라고 한다. 가사가 난해한 편이고 사회 비판적인 성격이 있다. 뮤직비디오 버전은 앨범 및 싱글 버전보다 길고 몇몇 가사가 추가되었는데, 2011년에 되어서야 음원으로 발매되었다. 미국, 일본, 호주, 프랑스 등 일부 지역 한정으로 싱글이 발매됐는데, 호주에서만 9위라는 높은 순위를 기록했다.

부드러운 멜로디와 프리다의 아름다운 보컬이 어우러진 곡이지만, 클라이맥스를 제외한 가사를 보면 은근히 선정적이다. Make it slow, take it easy 등 음란마귀를 끼고 보면 묘하게 들릴 수도 있는 가사라. 하지만 클라이맥스와 같이 보면 뮤즈와 음악가의 이야기라는 것을 알 수 있다. 엘살바도르와 아르헨티나에서만 스페인어로 번안해 싱글로 발매되었기 때문에 세계적으로 히트 하지는 않은 노래이지만, 멜로디가 한국 감성에 맞았는지 한국에서는 어느 정도 인지도가 있어 노래방에 수록되어 있기도 하다. 영화 맘마미아 2에선 젊은 도나가 식당의 가수로 채용되기 위해 부른 오디션 곡으로 쓰였다.

이중인격, 또는 변덕스러운 마음에 관해 노래한 곡. 자신을 지킬 앤 하이드에 비유하면서 너 역시 그런 이중성을 지녔다고 하는 가사가 인상적이다. 앨범 안에서 신디사이저의 비중이 가장 높은 곡으로, 일부는 신스팝으로 분류하기도 한다.

제목만 보면 희망찰 것 같은 노래이지만, 가사만 보면 마냥 그렇지도 않다. 오히려 앞으로 다가올 미래에 대한 두려움과 불안함에 대해 다룬 조금은 어두운 곡이다. 그런데 제작 중에는 이것보다는 조금 더 희망찬 노래로 제작되었던 듯 하다.[6]
뮤직비디오 중 일부는 Super Trouper의 뮤비를 재탕(?)한 거라고 한다.
영어 버전은 앨범이 발매된 지 무려 19년 후에야 유럽 여러 국가에서 발매되었는데, 기이하게도 영화 맘마미아 개봉을 전후로 한 2007년부터 매년 연말연시에 차트에 진입하기 시작했다. 특히 스웨덴에선 2008년 4위, 2009년 5위를 기록했는데, 싱글을 발매한 1999년~2000년 당시 순위가 27위에 불과했던 것을 감안하면(A-teens가 리메이크한 버전이 4위에 오르긴 했다.) 엄청난 성적이다. 규모는 조금 작지만 All I Want for Christmas Is You와 같은 연금으로서의 역할을 다하고 볼 수도 있다. 최근엔 순위가 조금 죽은 것 같긴 하지만.
2011년에 전세계 500장 한정으로 7" 싱글이 재발매되었다. A사이드는 Happy New Year, B사이드는 The Way Old Friends do가 수록되었다. 다만 전세계 500장 한정이라 순식간에 동이 나버렸고 현재는 약 100만원 언저리의 천문학적인 가격에 거래된다. 그 후 2018년 12월, 2019년 새해를 기념하기 위해 다시 한번 싱글발매가 이뤄졌는데, 이번에는 전세계 3000장 한정이다. 6집의 분위기와 유사한 정통 디스코 사운드의 곡이다. LP 앨범에 수록된 버전은 마지막에 박수 소리가 녹음되었는데, 다음 곡 The Way Old Friends Do의 도입부 박수와 노래의 끝 부분이 교차된 것이다. 리마스터 버전에는 도입부 박수가 실려있지 않다. LP와 동일한 마스터를 사용한 폴리도어 초기 CD 발매분에서도 나온다. 본래 싱글로 발매할 생각이 없었으나 당시의 싱글로선 드물었던 12인치 LP 싱글로 발매하기로 해 On And On And On과 더블 A면 싱글로 영국, 아일랜드, 독일, 벨기에 등지에 발매되었다. 영국에서는 7위를 기록해 3집 SOS 이후로 가장 낮은 성적을 기록했지만, 동시에 12인치 싱글로서 최고 성적을 거두었다.
맘마미아에서는 소피와 스카이가 사랑을 나누는 듀엣 곡으로 특히 영화에서 큰 인기를 끌었다. 이 둘이 부른 버전으로 노래방에 수록될 정도. 여담으로 후반부에는 스카이와 소피가 ~~Dancing Queen에서 도나, 타냐, 로지에 이어~~ 바다에 입수한다. 전체적인 비트 때문인지 멜로딕 메탈밴드들에게 커버곡으로 인기가 있는 편. 헬로윈과 아반타지아가 커버했다. 2020년대부터는 틱톡이나 유튜브 등지에서 2차 세계대전 혹은 영화 나폴레옹 등 뭔가 심각한 소재를 배경으로 속도를 느리게 한 버전이 유행하고 있다. 가사와 비트가 역설적인 분위기를 내기 때문인 듯.

기쁠 때나 슬플 때나, 싸우고 난 뒤에도 다시 화해하는 오랜 친구처럼 곤경을 함께 맞서자는 내용의 곡이다. 노래 길이는 3분이 조금 안 되는 정도로 짧은 편이다. 라이브 버전이라 그런지 앞뒤에 관객의 박수 소리가 들린다. 앨범이 처음 발매되었을 당시에는 싱글 컷이 되지 않았지만 1992년, ABBA의 베스트 앨범을 홍보하기 위해서 싱글 컷 되었다. 2016년, ABBA의 멤버들이 다시 모여 이 노래를 부르는 영상이 공개되자 ABBA 재결합설이 대두되기도 했다. 가사의 메시지와 맞물려 올드 팬이라면 울컥할 요소.
