1. 개요

미합중국 해병대의 수직이착륙 공격기. 영국의 호커 시들리 해리어를 라이센스 생산/개량한 버전이다.

2. 역사

미 해병대는 1969년 영국 공군의 최초 해리어 비행대가 창설될 무렵부터 해리어에 상당한 관심을 보이기 시작했으며, 이는 호커 시들리가 미국 수출 가능성을 염두에 두고 기체를 추가 개발하는 계기가 되었다. 의회에서는 복수의 근접항공지원기 개발이 동시에 진행되는 상황에 대해 우려를 표했으나, 해병대는 해리어 도입에 강한 의지를 보이며 해리어를 도입하는데 성공했다.

해병대는 1971년 1월 6일, 영국 서리주(Surrey) 던스폴드 비행장(Dunsfold Aerodrome)에서 첫 해리어를 인수하였으며, 같은 해 1월 26일부터 팻턱센트 리버 해군항공기지(Naval Air Station Patuxent River)에서 시험 운용을 시작하였다. AV-8A는 그해부터 해병대 공격비행대에서 기존 항공기를 대체하며 실전 배치되었고, 해병대는 해리어의 함상 운용 가능성에도 주목하게 되었다.

엘모 줌왈트 제독은 해리어와 헬리콥터를 함께 운용할 수 있는 15,000톤급 경항모인 ‘제해함(Sea Control Ship)’ 개념을 제안하였다. 미 해군은 이를 바탕으로 강습상륙함 USS 괌(LPH-9)을 임시 제해함(Interim Sea Control Ship)으로 개조하여 1971년부터 1973년까지 해리어 운용 가능성을 실증하였다. 이 개념은 이후에도 슈퍼캐리어의 운용 타당성, 국방예산 삭감 등의 이슈와 맞물려 간헐적으로 재검토되었다.

1976년에는 해리어 14대가 항공모함 USS 프랭클린 D.루즈벨트에 탑재되어 6개월간 운용되었고, 이 시험을 통해 해리어가 일반 함재기보다 불리한 기상 조건에서도 안정적으로 작전할 수 있음이 입증되었다. 해병대는 이러한 성과를 바탕으로 해리어의 해군 작전 통합 방안을 모색하였으며, 민간 화물선을 해리어 운용 플랫폼으로 전환하는 비상 계획인 아라파호(Arapaho) 구상도 그 일환이었다.

또한 아이오와급 전함의 재가동이 검토되던 시기, 후방 주포탑을 제거하고 비행갑판, 격납고, 스키 점프대 두 개를 설치하여 해리어를 운용하는 '전함-항공모함 하이브리드' 설계안도 제시되었다. 그러나 해병대는 추가적인 항공기 플랫폼보다는 해상 포격지원을 더 중시하였고, 막대한 비용과 지연 가능성 역시 문제로 지적되어 해당 계획은 폐기되었다.

해병대는 해리어를 육상 기반의 원정 작전에 활용하는 방안을 정립하였으며, 이는 전방기지를 중심으로 신속한 전개를 목표로 하였다. 전투지역(FEBA)으로부터 약 32km 떨어진 지역에 1~4대 규모의 소형 기지를 24시간 이내에 설치하고, 보다 안정된 후방 기지는 80km 정도 떨어진 곳에 위치시키는 방식이었다. 이러한 운용은 출격률을 증가시키고 연료 소비를 절감하는 데 크게 기여하였다.

AV-8A의 공대공 능력 또한 검증되었는데, 맥도넬 더글러스(McDonnell Douglas) F-4 Phantom II와의 모의 공중전 훈련에서 조종사들은 ‘전진 비행 중 추력 편향(Vectoring In Forward Flight, VIFF)’ 기술을 통해 상대를 기동으로 압도할 수 있음을 입증하였다. 이로써 해리어가 근접 공중전에서도 효율적인 전투기 역할을 수행할 수 있다는 평가를 받게 되었고, 이전까지 수직이착륙기가 고비용 실패작으로 간주되던 인식에도 변화가 일어났다.

해병대는 해리어의 군사적 가능성에 확신을 가지고 후속 개발에 적극 나섰다. 1979년부터는 AV-8A를 AV-8C로 개량하는 사업이 진행되었으며, 이는 기체 수명 연장과 수직이착륙 성능 개선에 중점을 둔 것이었다. AV-8C를 포함한 AV-8A 계열 기체들은 1987년까지 모두 퇴역하였고, 이들은 1985년부터 운용이 시작된 2세대 해리어인 AV-8B 해리어 II로 교체되었다.

해리어의 미 해병대 운용 성과는 미 공군에서도 관심을 불러일으켜 AV-8B 해리어 II 도입이 제안되었으나, 실제 발주로는 이어지지 않았다. 1990년대 후반부터 해병대는 해리어 II를 F-35B 라이트닝 II로 단계적으로 대체하는 계획을 수립하였다.

한편, AV-8A 및 AV-8C는 AV-8B와 마찬가지로 높은 사고율 문제를 겪었으며, 1970~80년대에 약 40기의 기체가 사고로 손실되고 30명에 가까운 조종사가 사망하였다.
