1. 개요

흥천사의 중심 건물로, 극락보전은 아미타불을 모시는 법당이다.

흥천사는 창건할 때부터 신앙의 기반을 정토에 두었다. 정토 신앙은 대승불교의 일종으로, 열심히 염불하여 수행하면 극락 왕생하여 열반을 얻는다는 교리이다. 자세한 내용은 정토교 문서 참조. 정토는 일종의 이세계로, 각 세계마다 부처님이 한 분씩 계시는데, 그 중에서도 대표적인 부처님과 세계가 바로 아미타불과 서방극락세계이다. 그래서 흥천사에서 가장 핵심인 전각은 바로 아미타불을 모신 극락보전이다.

2. 역사

흥천사는 1396년(태조 5년)에 조선 태조의 정비였던 신덕왕후 강씨가 죽자, 태조가 슬퍼하며 아내의 명복을 빌기 위해 신덕왕후가 묻힌 정릉 인근에 지었던 절이다. 그러나 계모 신덕왕후를 거의 증오하다시피 했던[2] 태종은 즉위한 뒤인 1403년(태종 3년)에 사찰에 딸린 전답과 노비의 수를 줄이고, 1408년(태종 8년)에는 절의 건물 170칸을 뜯어서 명나라 사신들의 객사인 태평관을 짓는데 사용했다.

이후에도 숭유억불 정책에 따라 허물고 수리하기를 반복했다. 그러다 1504년(연산군 10년)에는 12월에는 화재로 절이 전부 불 타 사리각만 남았고, 1510년(중종 5년)에는 이 사리각까지 불 타 완전히 폐허가 되어버렸다.

그 뒤 오랜 세월이 지나 1794년(정조 18년)에 정조의 명으로 현 위치인 성북구 돈암동 지역에 '신흥사(神興寺)'란 이름으로 절을 다시 복구했다. 현재의 극락보전은 1853년(철종 4년)에 구봉 계장 스님이 새로 지은 것이다.

1985년 12월 5일에 서울특별시 유형문화재 제66호로 지정받았다.

3. 구조

단층으로, 정면 3칸, 측면 3칸이다. 기둥과 주춧돌은 원형이며, 고막이벽은 적색 벽돌이다. 지붕은 팔작지붕이고 처마는 겹처마로, 공포는 다포이다.

문은 정면과 좌측면의 남쪽 가장자리에 달려있으며, 문살은 꽃 모양이라 아름다운 느낌을 자아낸다. 뒷면과 우측면은 전부 벽이며 벽에는 불교와 관련된 그림이 그려져 있다. 좌측면 벽 앞에는 일반 신도들이 사용할 신발장을 두었다.
