1. 개요

일본 오카야마현의 현청 소재지이자 최대 도시.

2. 지리

오카야마현 중부에 위치해 있으며 서쪽으로 쿠라시키시와 소자시에 접하고 동쪽으로 아카이와시와 세토우치시, 북쪽으로는 키비츄오초와 미사키초, 남쪽으로는 타마노시와 코지마 만에 접한다. 시 중심부로는 아사히카와가 흐르며 이 강 연안 평야에 시가지가 형성되어 있다. 평야가 많은 남부와 달리 북부는 키비 고원으로 이어지는 산지가 대부분이다.[2]

2009년 정령지정도시[3]로 지정되었다.

아래의 지도를 보면 알 수 있듯이 세토 내해를 건너면 바로 카가와현의 중심지인 타카마츠시다. 이렇게 지리적으로 인접한 관계로 오카야마시와 타카마츠시의 교류는 활발한 편이다.[4][5]

3. 기후

강수량이 1,100mm 정도이며 강수일수도 가장 적어 비가 무진장 많이 내리는 일본에서 가장 적은 지역 중 하나로 이 정도면 일본보다 강수량이 적은 한국에서도 적은 축에 낀다. 그래서 맑은 나라(晴れの国)라고 홍보하고 있다. 다만 그 맑은 날씨가 주로 여름에 집중되는 편, 오카야마 뿐 아니라 시코쿠의 기후 자체가 쾨펜의 기후 구분상으로는 Cfa인데 실제 날씨는 Csa에 가까운 특징을 보인다.

4. 경제

2020년 기준 실질 GDP는 2조 8154억 3900만 엔이며 1인당 평균 소득은 309만 3천엔이다. 총생산에서 각 산업군별 비중은 1차 산업 0.5%, 2차 산업 20.6%, 3차 산업 78.9%로 3차 산업 비중이 높은 편에 속한다.[6]

기린 맥주의 공장이 이곳에 있어서 많은 사람들이 방문한다. [7] 유력 지방은행 중 하나인 주고쿠은행의 본점도 여기 있다.

학습지를 위시한 교육 및 육아 전문 출판사로 유명한 베넷세(ベネッセ)의 본사가 여기 있다. 한국 국내에서도 친숙한 줄무늬 호랑이 시마지로 등을 출판하는 회사다. 나오시마초의 그 유명한 베네세 아트 사이트도 이름처럼 여기서 지역 기여 차원으로 주도해 기획된 프로젝트다.

5. 교육

일본에서도 흔치 않은 의과대학 계열 고등학교인 가와사키 의대 부속고가 있어서, 졸업 후 바로 무시험 전형을 통해 의과대학으로 진학한다.[8]

전반적으로 고교 편차치는 썩 높진 않으나[9], 다른 중소도시랑 비교하면 그래도 낮은 건 절대 아니며 전국 평균에 밀리는 것은 아니다.

현내 최고의 대학은 오카야마대학이다. 보통 칸세이가쿠인대학, 칸사이대학, 리츠메이칸대학 등 칸사이권의 유명 사립대나 오사카대학 같은 명문 국립대로 진학하는 학생들은 꽤 있지만, 도쿄 쪽의 경우 아예 도쿄 쪽으로 이주하고 싶은 학생이 아니면 잘 안 간다는 듯. 칸사이권으로 진학하는 경우는 오카야마로 취업하려는 경우도 꽤 많다. 오카야마 출신들이 오카야마대학으로 진학하는 경우는 대부분 현내에 남을 생각으로 진학하는 학생들이 많다.

이외의 사립대학은 중하위권, 하위권 대학이 많으나, 2020년대 일본의 구인난 덕분에 그럭저럭 취업은 되기 때문에 다닐 가치가 없는 급은 아니다. 오카야마이과대학[10], 슈지츠대학[11] 등이 있다.

6. 관광

간사이권과 후쿠오카권 사이에 있는 주코쿠 지역의 도시이기에 두 권역에 비해 관광자원이나 수요가 많지 않다.
일본 데님의 최초 생산지이자 성지이다. 데님 매니아들은 고지마 청바지 스트리트가 필수 관광코스.
주고쿠 지방에서는 그래도 히로시마시와 함께 인지도가 있는 도시이기는 하나 아직 한국인 관광객들의 발길이 많은 도시는 아니다. 간사이권에서는 칸사이 와이드 에이리어 패스와 같은 교통 패스를 통해 신오사카역에서 오카야마 역까지 신칸센으로 50분 가량이면 접근이 가능하다. 오사카권에서 장기간 여행한다면 패스를 통해 하루 정도의 일정을 잡을 만하다. 대한항공이 인천-오카야마 간 직항을 운행하고 있어서 방문도 수월하다.

일본 3대 정원[12]으로 알려진 고라쿠엔(後楽園), 오카야마 성, 그리고 대형 불교 사찰인 소겐지가 주요 관광지이다. 특히 오카야마 성은 행주 대첩 당시 일본군을 진두지휘했던 다이묘인 우키타 히데이에의 거성이기도 하다. 현재 존재하는 천수각은 현재 남아있는 대부분의 일본 성들이 그렇듯이, 1960년대에 재건한 것.

7. 교통

교통의 요지로, 산요 신칸센과 산요 고속도로 등이 오카야마를 지나고 있으며, 오카야마역은 지나가는 모든 신칸센 열차가 설 뿐 아니라 시코쿠, 돗토리현, 시마네현 등지로 오가는 특급열차들이 서는 곳이다. 철도편을 이용하여 시코쿠로 이동할 경우 반드시 오카야마시를 거쳐야 한다[13]. 그 외에도 돗토리현, 시마네현으로의 교통편도 있어서 주고쿠 지방 교통에서 중요한 역할을 담당하는 곳이다. 그리고 카가와현 타카마츠시로 가는 여객선이 자주 오간다. 선라이즈 이즈모/세토가 이 역에서 연결 또는 분리된다.

노면전차가 운행되고 있으며, 2개의 노선이 있다. 중심역은 오카야마에키마에역 [14]이다.

한국과의 교통편으로는 인천~오카야마간 정기 항공노선이 개설되어 있으며, 대한항공에서 1991년 주 4회 최초 취항 이후 코로나 기간을 제외하고 꾸준히 운항하고 있다. 2025년 기준 주 3회 운항중.[15] 골프와 일본인 수요가 대부분인 노선으로 여행객 수요가 그리 많지 않아 대한항공의 일본노선 중 가장 저렴하다는 장점이 있어, 오사카 여행수요를 일부 분담하기도 한다.

시내버스의 경우 오카덴, 료비버스, 우노버스 등이 있는데 관광객은 그다지 탈 일이 없지만 유학이나 취업을 하면 그 중에서도 가장 구석구석까지 들어가는 우노버스를 탈 일이 많다. 그러나 우노버스는 하레카라는 오카야마 전용 교통카드만 사용가능하기 때문에 정말 어지간하면 타지 않는 것을 추천한다.[16] 심지어 오카야마 현민들도 우노버스‘만’ 다니는 노선을 이용하는 것이 아닌 이상 거른다. 이게 차라리 다른 중소도시처럼 모든 교통수단이 스이카나 파스모를 안 받으면 모르겠으나 오카야마에서는 우노버스를 제외하면 대부분 스이카나 파스모를 받기 때문에 하레카가 굳이 필요하지 않다.

8. 스포츠

J1 리그의 파지아노 오카야마 [17], 여자배구 오카야마 씨걸즈 등이 이 지역을 근거지로 두고 있다.

9. 매체에서의 등장

1993년 방영된 MBC 드라마 파일럿에서 주인공 강민기(최수종 역)가 오카야마 공항으로 비행하는 장면이 나온다. 이때 함께 조종하던 기장(문회원 역)이 오카야마시에 대해 조용하고 깨끗한 가장 일본적인 도시라고 소개하였다.

도쿄, 오사카, 후쿠오카처럼 대도시는 아니기에[18] 한국인 관광객은 적은 편이다. 벚꽃철에 시내에서 마주치는 한국인들을 열 손가락 안으로 꼽을 수 있을 정도이다.[19] 다만 오카야마역 앞에 위치한 돈키호테나 쿠라시키 미관지구, 고라쿠엔 등 명소를 방문한다면 한국인 관광객을 제법 많이 마주칠 수 있다.

워홀러나 유학생이 많은 곳도 아니다. 서일본의 국립대에선 명문권 반열에 있는 오카야마대학에 소수의 한국인 유학생들이 있으며, 다른 사립대인 오카야마 상과대학에도 역시 매년 소수의 한국인 교환학생이나 편입생들이 오고 있다. 그 외에는 극소수의 신입학생도 나온다. 때문에 한국인이 적게 찾는 곳처럼 보일 수도 있다.

그러나 방문객의 범위를 보다 확장해보면 생각보다 많은 한국인들이 찾는 지역이다. 가장 큰 이유는 대한항공의 독점노선인데도 불구하고 왕복 표값이 간사이 국제공항의 저가항공 노선 왕복 표값과 비슷하게 나오기 때문.[20] 여기에 FSC 특유의 라운지 서비스, 아늑한 기내 환경, 마일리지가 더해져 비즈니스 수요를 나름 확보하고 있다.

동서남북 교통환경이 좋고 간사이 외의 노선들보다 저렴하다 보니 정작 히로시마, 돗토리, 다카마쓰 등의 지역을 가는데 그 지역 공항이 아닌 이 곳을 이용하는 경우도 더러 있다. 또, 오카야마현 중부부터는 개발이 덜 되었지만 수질 좋은 온천마을, 가성비 좋은 골프장이 잘 조성되어 있어 패키지 관광객들도 많이 찾는다.[21] 이런 사람들은 대개 관광객, 학생들과 동선 및 시간이 겹치지 않으며 오카야마시 외부에 가는 경우도 많기 때문에 관광객의 시점에서는 한국인의 수가 적어 보이는 것이다.

오카야마시가 일본배우 오다기리 죠의 고향으로 종종 헷갈려 하는 경우가 있는데, 오다기리죠는 같은 현의 츠야마시 출신이다.

2000년대 초반 2ch(현 5ch) 등 인터넷 커뮤니티에 오카야마의 뽕 내지는 지능형 안티들이 몇몇 있었는데[22], 이를 비꼬는 '대도시 오카야마'(大都会岡山)라는 밈이 만들어졌다. 오카야마는 히로시마에 밀려 주코쿠 지방의 만년 2위 도시 신세를 면치 못했는데, 당시 오카야마뽕들은 오카야마 소재의 화학기업 '하야시바라'(林原)의 오카야마역 일대 재개발 계획[23]이 완성되면 오카야마가 히로시마를 뛰어넘는 대도시가 된다고 설레발을 치는 와중에 '오카야마가 주코쿠 지방의 중심이 된다' 같은 비교적 현실적인 내용으로 시작한 것이 점점 지능적 안티들까지 붙는 과정에서 살이 붙어 '오카야마가 뉴욕·런던을 뛰어넘는 세계 최대 도시가 되고, 일본이 오카야마국으로 바뀌고, 지구가 오카야마 행성으로 불린다' 등의 허무맹랑한 내용들로 변하면서 밈이 되었다. 한편 대도시 오카야마라는 이름은 안젤라 아키가 한 방송에 출연해 도쿠시마현 출신인 본인은 오카야마를 대도시로 보였다는 말을 함으로서 붙혀졌다.
이 '대도시 오카야마'는 미개의 땅 군마와 함께 양대 지역드립이라고 하며 마침 그려지는 모습도 우주급 대도시와 야생에 가까운 미개척지로 대비된다.
오카야마 사람들의 바램과는 달리 하야시바라 시티는 2011년 하야시바라가 파산하면서 물거품이 되었다(...) 그래도 이온몰이 들어섰고[24] 밈 또한 나름 긍정적으로 여겨졌는지 이바라기 류타 현지사는 밈을 묻어가기보단 잘 써먹는게 좋다고 생각한다는 투의 반응을 보였고 오오모리 마사오 시장 또한 주목받아서 나쁠거 없다는 반응을 내비쳤다. 이후로도 이온몰 오픈 광고에 이 드립을 활용하거나 2013년에는 시 홍보 동영상에서 대놓고 대도시 오카야마라는 멘트를 치는 등 잘 써먹고 있다.

[1] 추계인구 2026년 1월 1일 기준[2] #[3] 지금까지 그 기준이 여러 번 바뀌었지만 현재는 대략 인구 70만 이상에 그 지역에서 중심 기능을 수행하는 도시로, 아래에 구를 둘 수 있는 시이다. 한국의 수원시, 창원시, 포항시 등 자치구가 아닌 구를 둘 수 있는 시와 유사하나, 이쪽은 한국의 광역시 이상으로 거대한 요코하마시나 나고야시까지 포함하고 있어서 한국의 구를 둔 시와 1:1로 대응시키기는 애매하다. 다만 오카야마시, 시즈오카시 등의 중규모 도시의 경우 한국의 그것과 대충 1:1 대응이 가능하다고 할 수 있다.[4] 오카야마 공항에서 인천으로 가는 항공편이 대한항공 독점으로 비싼 탓에, 에어서울과 진에어가 다니는 타카마츠 공항으로 비행기를 타고 와서 마린 라이너로 오카야마에 들어오는 수요도 생겼다.[5] 일본에는 히로시마시-마츠야마시, 기타큐슈시-시모노세키시, 아오모리시-하코다테시 같이 바다를 건너 마주보는 도시가 여러 곳 있다.[6] #[7] #[8] 다만 저 카와사키의과대학은 일본 의다 사이에서는 하위권이다. 물론 와세다나 게이오 이공계열 학과에 들어갈 성적 정도는 갖춰야 한다. 사실 진짜 문제는 이 학교는 일본 의대 사이에서도 학비가 제일 비싸다는 게 더 문제.[9] 오카야마시도 아닌 오카야마현 전체로 봐도 제일 높은 고등학교의 편차치가 치바 현/사이타마현 으로만 가도 7-10위권이다.[10] 전반적으로는 편차치 30대에서 커트라인이 잡히는 하위권 대학이지만 이 학교는 수의대가 있어서 수의대만큼은 편차치가 칸칸도리츠랑 비슷하며 하위과보다는 오히려 더 높다. 또한 오카야마의 회사에는 의외로 이 대학 출신 고위직이나 중간관리직들이 꽤 많다.[11] 오카야마역에서 1개 역 떨어져있는 곳으로 역 바로 앞에 대학이 있다. 다만 이 학교에는 오카야마이과대학같은 간판 학과는 없다.[12] 가나자와시의 겐로쿠엔, 미토시의 가이라쿠엔, 오카야마시의 고라쿠엔[13] 버스편의 경우 오사카 출발시 아카시 해협 대교를 건너 시코쿠 도쿠시마현으로 바로 들어간다. 덕분에 일본인 입장에선 바로 오사카시라는 대도시로 보내주는 버스를 거르고 JR 시코쿠 열차를 이용해야 할 이유가 많지 않다. 비슷한 이유로 신고베역을 도어투도어로 이어주는 신고베-도쿠시마 버스도 절찬리에 운행중.[14] 역명 그대로 오카야마역 앞에 있다.[15] 24년 하계만 해도 데일리로 운항을 했으나, 구마모토, 고베 등 신규 취항지 증가에 따라 오카야마행 노선이 데일리 → 주 5회 → 주 3회로 점차 감편되었다.[16] 거기다가 하레카는 버스 터미널 영업시간, 혹은 버스 안에서만 충전이 가능하기 때문에 충전이 매우 불편하다. 거기다가 버스 안에서 충전할 때도 기사가 편한 타이밍에 하지 않으면 기사한테 왜 아까 충전 안 했냐고 반말로 혼나는 일도 비일비재하다. 그리고 당연히 이 버스기사들은 영어를 매우 못한다. (물론 우노버스를 이용해야 할 사람이면 외국인이어도 일본어를 구사할 가능성이 매우 높긴 하다.)[17] 수많은 한국선수가 거쳐간 팀이다.[18] 한국으로 치면 전주, 천안, 포항 같은 중견급 도시다.[19] 관광객의 경우 주로 대도시권을 돌아보고 나서 다른 여행지를 찾는 일본여행 매니아들이나, 주코쿠 권역의 문화유산과 정원들을 감상하려는 사람들이 찾는다. 그 밖에는 교통 입지에 주목해 간사이, 주고쿠, 시고쿠 등 복수 지역을 둘러보려는 사람들이 거점으로 삼기도 한다. 간사이 와이드 에어리어 패스가 높은 효율을 발휘하는 지역으로, 서로 멀리 떨어져 있는 지역들인 돗토리/다카마쓰/히메지/고베에 심지어 오사카까지 이 곳에 숙소를 잡으면 환승을 최소화하며 편하게 둘러볼 수 있다. 반면 시가/나라/와카야마를 둘러보려면 오사카를 거점삼는 게 낫다. 교토는 JR보단 지역 패스와 사철이 더 유용하다.[20] 간사이는 일본 노선을 취항하는 국내 항공사, 특히 저가 항공사라면 여러 편성을 쑤셔넣고 보는 곳인데 경쟁이 치열한 간사이행 저가항공 티켓과 독점노선+지방도시+FSC 티켓의 대등하다는 것은 이 노선이 말도 안 되게 저렴하단 뜻이다.[21] 애초에 대한항공이 일 1회 왕복하는 노선인데 장사가 안 되는 곳에서 미쳤다고 이럴 리 없다. 장사가 잘 되는 노선이 아니면 항공사들은 단거리 노선이더라도 주 2,3회 정도만 운항한다.[22] 그 발단은 과거 2ch의 지리 고향 자랑판 이라는 게시판에서 삿센히로후쿠vs오카야마간 대립으로부터 시작됐다.[23] 하야시바라 시티(ハヤシバラシティ)라는 이름의 재개발 계획이었는데 무려 1500억엔 가량의 금액을 투자하여 초고층 빌딩, 백화점, 호텔, 박물관, 미술관, 아파트 등을 세울 예정이었다.[24] 하야시바라 시티 당시의 청사진의 위용을 찾기 힘든 모습이긴 하나 나름 이온에선 꽤 밀어주는 점포인데 이온몰 최초의 도심형 점포이기도 하고 규모도 결코 작지 않아 나름대로 주코쿠 지역 플래그십 스토어로서 관리하고 있다.
