4. 줄거리

미시마 사건이 일어난 1970년 11월 25일, 미시마는 자신이 작성한 원고와 제복을 챙겨 자신이 가장 신임하던 4명의 방패회 회원들과 함께 자위대 청사로 향하러 자동차에 탑승한다.

자동차가 가는 도중에는 플래시백으로 병약하던 미시마가 어떻게 일본의 명망있는 작가가 되었는지, 또 어떻게 우익 활동에 발을 담그게 되었는지를 보여준다. 또한 플래시백에서는 미시마가 집필한 금각사, 쿄코의 집, 달아난 말[2]을 아름다운 미장센으로 설명한다. 총 4장으로 구성되어있고 미, 예술, 행동, 펜과 칼의 조합이 그것이다.

결말부에서 미시마는 자위대 청사에 도착한 후 총감을 결박하고 미시마 사건을 일으킨다. 연단에 올라섰을때 주마등처럼 그의 여러 기행과 (F110에 탑승한 전적 등등)인생을 장면과 나레이터가 소리내어 읽고 보여준다. 결국 말미에는 연설을 하며 자위대원에게 소리치지만 아무런 소용이 없고 되려 욕을 먹게 되자 미시마는 죽음 또한 예술로 승화한것인지는 모르겠으나 어쨌건 표면적으로는 반응에 대한 실망감에 죽음을 맞이한다.

미시마 - 그의 인생은 38회 칸 영화제 최우수 예술 공로상을 수상받은 만큼 폴 슈레이더가 미적인 감각을 발휘하였다. 특히 4개의 장[3] 중 그의 작품 세계를 재현해낼때 가장 빚난다. [4]

8. 기타
- 도시샤대학 영문과 교수로 재직 중이던 레오나르도 슈레이더가 당시 미시마 사건을 접하고 충격을 받아, 5년간의 자료 조사를 거친 후 동생인 폴 슈레이더와 함께 각본을 쓴 것이 이 작품의 시작이다.
- 크라이테리온 콜렉션에서 발매되었다. 또한 The best 50 criterion covers 에서 지명되었다.
- 일본에서는 제 1회 도쿄 국제 영화제에서 공개된 후 개봉할 예정이었으나, 유족의 항의와 우익단체들의 시위를 우려한 관계자들에 의해 최종적으로 공개가 무산되었다. 현재까지도 DVD 등의 2차 매체가 발매되지 않았다.
- 원래는 "천인오쇠" "금색"도 영화에 넣으려 했으나, 각각 각본상의 어려움, 유족의 반대로 현재의 작품들이 선정되었다.
- 오즈 야스지로의 페르소나 류 치슈가 주지승 역으로 특별출연했다.
- 사카모토 류이치[5]가 미시마 유키오 역을 제안받았으나 거절했다. 훗날 라디오에서 전장의 크리스마스 이후에 미시마 역까지 맡으면 우익으로 여겨질것 같았다고 밝혔다.
