1. 개요

문현진 [1] 글로벌피스재단 세계의장이 창설한 단체이다.

2017년 12월 2일 서울에서 창립대회를 열고 공식 발족하였다.#

2008년부터 시작된 통일교 왕자의 난으로 인해 후계권에서 밀려난 문현진은, 통일교와 별개의 독자 노선을 걸어왔으며, 그 일환으로 만든 단체가 '가정평화협회'이다.

문현진 자체가 종교적 색채가 옅은 인물이지만, 가정평화협회는 그가 이끄는 단체 중 종교적 색채가 그나마 가장 강하다. 본 협회를 통해 훈독회, 축복식 등의 의식을 주관한다.

문현진은 스스로를 “종교의 틀을 벗어난 평화운동가”로 규정하며, 통일교 및 그 조직과는 무관하다고 밝힌 바 있다.#

2. 창립 배경

문현진은 문선명에 의해 1998년 후계자로 세워졌다.[2] 문현진은 리더십과 연설 능력이 뛰어나 후계자로서의 지지를 많이 받았고, 당시 분위기 상 문현진이 무난하게 대를 이어 세습할 것만 같았다.

문현진은 통일교의 종교적인 색채를 최대한 줄이고 사회 운동을 더욱 강조했다. 문현진은 아버지 문선명을 종교 창시자보다는 평화 통일 운동가로서 존경한다고 한다. # 이는 통일교라는 종교적 정체성을 중요시한 교권 지도자들과 대립각을 세우는 계기가 되었다.

2008년 3월 23일[3], 문현진은 편지를 통해 부모 문선명 부부에게 "진정으로 아버지의 꿈을 이루어 나가기 위해서는 먼저 우리가 통일교의 틀에서 벗어나 진정한 초종교 운동을 전개해 나가야 한다"고 역설했다. # ‘통일교 비전과 평화 운동 방안’에 포함되어 있던 해당 보고서는 문선명에게 칭찬을 받을 만큼 입지가 확고했다. #

그러나 이러한 주장에 동의하지 않은 교단 내 지도부는 한학자와 4남 문국진, 7남 문형진의 지원을 바탕으로 주요 의사결정을 주도하였다. 그 과정에서 문현진은 차례로 여러 단체의 직책에서 해임되었다.

2008년 4월, 그는 2000년부터 맡아온 세계평화청년학생연합(W-CARP) 회장직과 1998년부터 맡아온 세계평화통일가정연합 부회장직에서 해임되었으며, 당시 장인이었던 곽정환 세계회장도 직위에서 물러났다. 같은 해 4월 18일, 7남 문형진이 세계평화통일가정연합 세계회장에 취임하였고, 취임사에서는 종교적 정체성을 강조하였다(#).

이 시점을 기점으로, 한때 후계자로 거론되던 문현진은 통일교 산하 여러 단체의 회장·부회장직에서 차례로 물러나고, 사회운동과 평화운동에 집중하는 독자 노선을 걸었다.

3. 세계평화통일가정연합과의 관계

가정평화협회는 창설 시점부터 가정연합과는 무관한 독립 단체임을 명확히 해왔다.
김경효 가정평화협회 한국회장은 2025년 인터뷰에서 “통일교와 무관한 단체임에도 불구하고 통일교 관련 수사와 보도로 협회가 불필요한 오해를 받고 있다”고 밝혔다. # 그는 문현진이 2009년부터 독자적인 길을 걸었고, 2012년 부친의 별세 이후 통일교와 명확히 결별했다고 강조하였다. 또한 “문 의장은 통일교로부터 수십 차례 소송을 당했지만 독자적으로 통일운동과 글로벌 평화운동을 전개해왔다”며, 가정평화협회를 통일교와 연관 짓는 것은 오류라고 설명했다.

김 회장은 통일교 논란에 대해 “단순한 개인 일탈이 아니라 종교라는 이름으로 쌓은 사회적 신뢰가 무너진 것”이라고 비판하며, 기독교의 종교개혁처럼 통일교도 근본적 변화를 모색해야 한다고 주장하였다.

문현진 또한 인터뷰에서 "가정평화협회는 통일교회가 현재 대표하는 것들과는 하등의 관계가 없다. 통일교회 지도자들이 지향한 그릇된 방향과 그로 인한 피해를 쇄신해 함께하는 것이 원래 바람이었으나 그것이 더는 현실이 될 수 없다는 것을 깨달았다. 통일교회는 지금 둘로 갈라졌는데 그중 어느 곳도 아버님의 가르침과 공통점을 갖고 있지 않다. 선친의 가르침은 일관적이었으나 그들은 근본적인 가르침을 대변하지 못했다. 상황이 이렇기에 가정평화협회를 통해 선친의 뜻을 올바르게 구현하려는 것이다.”라고 밝혔다. #

문현진은 2017년 인터뷰에서 부친에 대해서 “10년간 아버님과 함께 일했다. 선친이 만든 기관이 아버님을 얼마나 잘못 대표하고 있는지 잘 알고 있다. 선친이 창설한 기관들이 아버님의 뜻과 다르게 운영돼 왔기에 많은 사람이 내 아버님을 잘못 이해한 것이다. 선친은 종교의 틀, 특히 통일교회의 틀을 벗어나기를 원했다. 종교 간 다리를 놓을 더 큰 영적 운동을 전개하고자 했다. 그래서 나에게 통일교회의 개혁을 이끌라는 책임을 맡겼으나 교회 지도자들은 완강히 저항했다. 이 같은 과정에서 제도화된 종교의 타락성을 직접 경험했다. 통일교회가 하는 일은 아버지께서 공식적으로 설교한 말씀과 전혀 다르다. 선친은 자신이 우상처럼 숭배되는 것을 결코 바라지 않았다. 이는 현재 통일교회의 많은 지도자가 자신만의 의도를 가졌다는 것을 방증한다. 그들의 의도는 선친이 내놓은 본연의 비전과 정렬되지 않는다. 우리는 언제나 유인상술(Bait And Switch)에 대한 비난을 받았다. 교회 지도자들의 잘못에서 비롯한 것이지만 외부 대중은 그 사실을 모르니 선친이 모든 비난을 받을 수밖에 없었다.”라고 밝혔다.#

4. 비전과 철학

가정평화협회는 “하나님 중심의 가정을 통한 평화세계 실현”을 비전으로 한다. 문현진은 저서 《코리안드림》에서 홍익인간 사상을 기초로 한 통일 한반도의 비전을 제시하였다. 그는 정치·경제적 접근보다 먼저 “공통의 비전 정립”이 필요하다고 주장하며, 인류가 “하나님 아래 한 가족(One Family Under God)”으로 하나 되어야 한다고 강조한다.

그의 설명에 따르면, 가정은 사랑을 배우는 “사랑의 학교”이자 질서를 배우는 “질서의 학교”이다. 부모의 사랑을 통해 자녀가 올바른 인격을 형성하고, 예의와 절제를 배운 아이가 성인이 되어 사회적 책임을 다한다는 것이다. 따라서 건강한 가정을 세우는 것은 세계 평화와 사회문제 해결의 기초 단위가 된다.

5. 신앙관과 종교관

가정평화협회는 하나님에 대해 “창조주”로 규정한다. 협회 측에 따르면 하나님을 어떻게 부르든 명칭은 중요하지 않으며, 본질은 인류의 권리와 자유가 하나님으로부터 부여된 절대적 가치라는 점에 있다. 따라서 보편적 원리와 가치를 논하려면 하나님을 반드시 포함시켜야 하며, 그렇지 않을 경우 개인이나 기관이 임의로 이를 정의할 위험이 있다고 본다. 협회는 하나님 중심의 가정이 이러한 보편적 원리와 가치를 실현하는 단위라고 강조한다.

종교관에 대해서는 특정 종교만이 구원의 길이라는 등식은 성립하지 않는다고 본다. 기독교·이슬람·불교 등 각 종교의 교리 중 일부를 제외하면, 대부분은 보편적 진리를 공유한다는 입장이다. 성인들의 가르침에 담긴 보편적 원리와 가치를 실천하는 사람들이 진리·선·정의를 추구하는 삶을 통해 구원을 획득한다고 보며, 종교는 구원의 증명서가 아니라 깨달음을 주는 도구라고 주장한다. 따라서 협회는 종교적 정체성보다는 “하나님의 아들딸”이라는 보편적 정체성에 기반해 인류가 하나 되어야 한다는 관점을 제시한다.

영성에 대해서는 “영적 각성”을 강조한다. 협회는 영적 성장은 자기 극복에서 시작된다고 보며, 자아를 주관하고 감정과 욕망을 절제하는 극기(克己)[4]를 중요한 요소로 제시한다. 자연은 예배와 기도를 드리는 장소이자 수련의 공간으로 인식된다. 하늘과 만물과 교감하는 자연은 예배당이자 학교로서 인간의 영적 성숙을 돕는다고 본다.

또한 성인들의 가르침은 종교 창시를 목적으로 한 것이 아니라 보편적 원리와 가치를 전하기 위함이었다고 설명한다. 종교 제도는 성인의 제자들에 의해 형성되었으며, 현재의 종교들이 이러한 제도적 틀을 넘어 창시자의 본래 가르침에 담긴 보편적 가치에 집중한다면 상호 소통이 가능하다고 본다. 인류의 지성과 영성이 그 수준에 도달했으며, 이를 통해 종교적 분열을 극복할 수 있다고 주장한다.

협회는 세속적 성공이 지배 가치로 자리 잡은 현대 사회의 문제에 대해서도 언급한다. 협회는 인류가 지금까지 당연하게 여기는 인권과 자유의 이념 역시 영적 진리 추구에서 비롯되었다고 설명한다. 유럽의 종교개혁과 계몽사상, 몽골 제국 시기의 교류와 자유 역시 보편적 진리 추구의 산물로 본다. 따라서 현대 사회 문제에 대응하기 위해 다시 한 번 영적 진리를 추구해야 하며, 영적 각성을 통한 변혁은 단순한 가능성이 아니라 실제로 일어날 것이라고 주장한다.

6. 가족관과 전통

가정평화협회는 가정을 하나님 중심의 기본 단위로 본다. 문현진은 협회의 공동 창설자로서 아내 문전숙과 함께 “남자 혼자만으로는 가정에 대해 말할 수 없으며, 가정은 남녀가 함께 이끌어야 한다”는 점을 강조하였다. 창립대회에서 로버트 슐러 목사가 “가장 인상 깊었던 점은 화목한 가족의 모습이었다”라고 언급한 것도 이러한 가치관을 반영한다.

문현진은 저서 《코리안드림》에서 한국의 대가족 모델의 중요성을 강조하였다. 그는 자신이 경험한 가족 전통 가운데 한국의 대가족 문화가 가장 아름답다고 평가하며, 서구인들이 특히 존중하는 요소는 연장자를 모시는 전통이라고 보았다. 그러나 현재 한국 사회가 이러한 전통적 가치를 상실하고 있으며, 노인 자살률 증가가 사회적 퇴화를 보여주는 지표라고 지적하였다. 협회는 전통적 가족 문화를 회복해야 사회적 공감대가 다시 살아난다고 주장한다.

협회는 또한 가정이 평화로운 세계를 실현하는 실천 단위라고 본다. 문현진은 “가정을 바로 세우지 못하면 평화도 발전할 수 없다”고 하며, 가정을 인종·민족·국적·종교를 초월한 친밀한 인간관계로 이루어진 공동체로 정의하였다. 올바른 가정의 형성이 평화와 사회문제를 해결하는 핵심적 기반이 된다는 입장이다. 또한 가정을 세대를 잇는 지혜와 경험의 계승 공간으로 본다. 그는 가정이 단순히 개인적 만족을 위한 것이 아니라 인류를 섬기기 위해 존재한다고 설명하였다.

가정평화협회에서 창설자 부부의 역할은 특별히 구분되지 않는다. 협회는 창설자 가정이 하나님 중심의 모범적 가정이 되는 것을 핵심적 역할로 규정한다. 또한 협회의 비전과 사명에 공감하는 이들이 참여할 수 있도록 하는 것이 책임이라고 보고, 다양한 파트너와 협력해 하나님이 바라는 평화세계를 실현하기 위한 활동을 추진하고 있다.

7. 활동 방향

가정평화협회는 가정을 사회의 가장 기본 단위로 보고, 저출산·고령화·가족 해체 문제 등 현대 사회의 과제를 해결하기 위한 활동을 전개하고 있다. 김경효 회장은 “가정이 무너지면 사회와 국가의 근간도 함께 흔들린다”며, 생명·혼인·출산·양육이라는 가정의 본질을 회복하는 사회운동에 집중하고 있다고 밝혔다.

곽정환(郭錠煥) : 문현진의 장인. 통일교 분열사를 논한 '사필귀정'이라는 저서가 있다.
곽진만 : 곽정환의 장남이자 남동생 곽진효와 함께 문효진의 밴드 세션으로 활동했다.
김영준 : 문현진의 통역을 맡고 있고 곽진만, 곽진효 형제와 마찬가지로 문효진의 밴드 세션으로 활동했으며 제18대 국회의원 선거에 평화통일가정당 소속으로 광진구 갑 선거구에 출마했다가 낙선했다. 현재는 UPI 부회장으로 활동하고 있다.

김종석(金鍾錫) : '통일교 경전의 비밀'(김종석 저), '통일교의 분열'(김종석 저), '통일교와 독생녀 현상'(김종석 저) 등 통일교 분열의 역사를 정리한 책을 여러 권 냈다. 1992년 통일교 3만 쌍 축복을 받았으며, 문현진 측을 지지한다.
