미국의 록밴드 카 시트 헤드레스트의 10집 음반.

2. 상세

마타도어 레코드와 계약한 뒤 발매한 첫 음반 Teens of Style은 과거 밴드캠프 시절 곡들을 재녹음한 앨범이었기 때문에, 카 시트 헤드레스트의 스튜디오 녹음 앨범 중 신곡들로 이루어진 것은 본작이 최초이다. 앨범 구상과 작곡은 Nervous Young Man 발매 이후인 2013~2014년에 대부분 이뤄졌으며, 당시 라이브에서도 수록곡들 일부를 연주하곤 하였다.[1]

스튜디오에서 녹음하여 전작들에 비해 가장 큰 변화는 드디어 들어 줄 만해진 음질이지만, 여전히 완전히 정돈된 사운드는 아니고 투박한 로파이 성향이 남아 있다. 또한 작곡 당시 윌이 좀 더 라이브로 연주하기 편한 앨범을 추구했기에, 전작들의 인디트로니카 실험들은 거의 자취를 감추고 정통 인디 록에 훨씬 가깝다. 첫 트랙 Fill in the Blank를 들으면 바로 느낄 수 있는 부분. 물론 Cosmic Hero나 The Ballad of the Costa Concordia처럼 10분 내외의 여러 파트로 이루어진 대곡들도 있으며, 스튜디오 프로듀싱 덕분에 이전의 대곡들보다 더 웅장하고 역동적이기까지 하다.

대학생 Joe[2]를 주인공으로 하는 콘셉트 앨범으로, 청소년기에서 성인기로 이행하는 과정에서 겪는 불안과 우울, 혼란 등의 감정을 여과없이 아주 진솔하게 묘사하고 있다. 이는 이전 앨범들에서도 줄곧 드러났던 정서인 만큼 윌 톨리도가 작곡 당시 자신의 감정을 투영했다고 볼 수 있으나, Joe가 마약에 손대거나 음주 운전을 하는 내용 등 세부적인 에피소드들은 픽션에 기반한다.

예산이 더 많고 주위가 더 화려해졌지만, 톨리도의 DIY 감성은 여전히 전해진다. 여백에 휘갈긴 낙서처럼 지저분한 그의 가사는 깔끔하게 정돈된 서사 대신 추상적 이미들을 택하는데, 마치 머릿속을 스쳐 지나가는 장면들을 낚아채 쓴 듯하다. 하지만 이런 능숙한 가사적 감각보다 중요한 것은, 그가 음악적으로 매력적인 노래로써 이를 전달할 수 있다는 점이다. 몇몇 인디 록 송라이터들과는 다르게, 톨리도의 가사는 종이에만 머물러 있지 않는다. 후렴은 예상한 순간에 등장하지도, 전통적인 형태를 따르지도 않지만 그럼에도 불구하고 강렬하게 와닿는다. Joe Gets Kicked Out이나 Drunk Drivers/Killer Whales의 화음들은 페스티벌에서 떼창으로 불리기에 안성맞춤이고, Fill in the Blank는 우직하고 맹렬한 록 트랙으로 카 시트 헤드레스트의 감성적인 청자들조차 몸을 흔들게 할 수 있다.
2010년대 인디 록 명반을 꼽을 때 빠지지 않는 아주 고평가받는 앨범이다. 밴드캠프 시절 앨범들의 특징이었던 자전적이고 가감없는 가사와 송라이팅은 여전히 살아 있으며, 풀 밴드와 깨끗해진 음질로 좀 더 대중적이고 귀에 쏙 들어오는 사운드를 보여준다. 이 때문에 Twin Fantasy (Face to Face)와 더불어 카 시트 헤드레스트 입문자에게 추천되는 앨범이다.
