1. 개요
글로리아 에스테판이 속한 라틴 팝 밴드 '마이애미 사운드 머신(Miami Sound Machine)'[1]에서 1985년에 발표한 앨범 'Primitive Love'의 수록록. 앨범 발매 다음달에 이 곡만 별도로 싱글컷을 했다. 작곡자는 마이애미 사운드 머신의 드러머인 엔리케 가르시아.이 곡의 히트로 미국 내에서 듣보잡 취급이었던 라틴 팝이 그나마 인지도를 갖기 시작했다. 본격적인 라틴 팝의 시대는 10여년이 지나 리키 마틴과 제니퍼 로페즈의 전성기와 함께 열렸지만 Conga, 그리고 마이애미 사운드 머신은 라틴 팝 전성기의 마중물 역할을 톡톡히 한 음악사적 공로를 갖고 있다.
2. 흥행
빌보드 핫 100 10위, 1986년 빌보드 핫 100 연말 싱글 차트 40위를 기록했고, RIAA Gold 인증을 받았다. 빌보드 핫 100 1위를 수 주간 지키고 RIAA Diamond 인증쯤은 받아야 히트곡 아니냐는 사람들도 많지만, 당시 미국에서 그야말로 듣보잡 대접을 받은 라틴 팝 장르 음악이 이 성적을 거둔 그 자체가 큰 히트를 의미한다.3. 커버
의외로 우려먹기가 많은 곡이다. 리믹스가 잦은 댄스 팝 특성상 리믹스 버전도 있지만, 글로리아 에스테판 본인이 직접 2001년에 'Y-Tu-Conga'라는 이름으로 리믹스 버전을 새로 녹음했다. 2020년에는 중미 리듬이 아닌 브라질식 남미 음악으로 탈바꿈한 'Samba'를 발표했다.Y-Tu-Conga(2001)
