1. 개요
산요자동차도(산요도, E2)의 나들목(13번)이다. 나들목 명칭은 2005년 3월 7일 아카이와군의 여러 지자체가 통합하며 아카이와시로 출범하기 이전의 소재지명인 산요초(山陽町)에서 유래한 것이다. 이 산요초는 또 다시 1953년 합병 출범 이전의 지명 니시야마손(西山村)과 코요손(高陽村)의 합성 지명이며, 공교롭게도 표기가 산요도 및 산요자동차도와 같지만 그 산요에서 유래한 것은 아니다. 여담으로, 산요자동차도는 또 다른 산요초[1]를 경유하기로 예정되어 있었는데 이 때문에 공사 중 가칭이 산요IC였던 하부IC의 사례가 있다.오카야마 근교로 뉴타운 주거지구로 개발된 아카이와시와 연결되는 나들목인데, 동시에 과거 오카야마시의 동부로 편입된 세토초 중심지와도 연결되는 나들목이다.
나들목 형태는 전형적인 트럼펫형 나들목이며, 일반 도로와의 접속은 평면교차로(삼거리)로 이루어진다. 직교하는 도로는 37번 오카야마현도다.
