1. 개요

미국토목학회(American Society of Civil Engineers, ASCE)는 미국을 대표하는 토목공학 분야의 학회이다. 1852년 설립되어 세계에서 가장 오래된 토목공학 학회 중 하나로, 토목공학 전 분야를 아우르는 학술지 및 기술 가이드, 표준, 윤리 규정 등을 제정 및 발행하고 있다.
ASCE는 저명한 학술 저널(Publications), 국제 학술대회, 인증 프로그램, 다양한 기술 위원회(Technical Committees) 활동 등으로 미국은 물론 전 세계 토목공학 발전을 선도하고 있다.
대표 학술지로는 Journal of Structural Engineering, Journal of Hydrologic Engineering, Journal of Civil Engineering 등이 있으며, 세계 토목공학 표준(ASCE Standards)을 제정하는 역할도 맡고 있다.

2. 설립

ASCE는 1852년 11월 5일, 뉴욕시에서 12명의 토목공학자들이 모여 창립되었다.
이들은 미국의 산업화와 도시 인프라 개발에 대응하여 체계적이고 전문적인 토목공학 기술 교류와 표준 제정이 필요하다는 데 공감하여 학회를 설립했다.
초대 회장은 제임스 로런스 스미스(James Laurie)가 맡았으며, 이후 미국 전역과 전 세계로 회원 기반이 확대되어 오늘날까지 명실상부한 글로벌 토목공학 전문 기관으로 성장하였다.
