드래곤볼 TVA 시리즈의 오리지널 애니메이션 드래곤볼 GT의 네번째 에피소드이자 흔히 구판이라고 불리는 드래곤볼 애니메이션 시리즈의 막을 내리는 에피소드.

2. 전개

지구의 드래곤볼이 30여년간 누적되어온 마이너스 에너지가 극에 달한 나머지 깨져버렸다. 사악한 에너지가 전 지구를 감싸며 악룡이 출현, 악룡은 네놈들 지구인 따위에게 들어줄 소원 따윈 없다고 말하며 드래곤볼을 먹고 사라진다. 그 뒤로는 온 우주를 파괴하려는 7마리의 사악룡들과 맞서 싸우는 내용.

3. 평가

3.1. 사악룡의 등장

GT가 호불호가 갈리는지라 별로 안 좋아하거나 드래곤볼 시리즈 및 관련 미디어믹스의 일부로 취급하지 않는 팬들이 있음에도 사악룡들 이야기는 동인의 소재로 잘 다루어진다. 드래곤볼 후속편격으로 연재하는 유명한 동인지들은 거의 대부분 파이널을 이 사악룡 이야기로 마무리를 짓는다. 원작에서 나온 "드래곤볼은 대자연의 혼란을 일으킨다."는 노계왕신의 말을 확장하여 적이 되어버린 드래곤볼과[1], 드래곤볼의 이야기는 드래곤볼로 끝낸다는 소재가 잘 먹힌 모양이다. 또한 Z 이후로 하나의 사건이 끝나면 이를 뒷수습하는 아이템 정도로 전락해버린 드래곤볼의 중요성을 다시금 일깨운다는 점도 호평을 받았다.

또한 사악룡들은 각각 과거에 이루어진 소원들의 잔재로 탄생한 존재들이기에, 이들과의 싸움은 단순한 악과 정의의 대결이 아니라, 손오공과 그 일행이 지금까지 대가없이 받아온 호의에 대한 책임으로 다뤄진다. 이것은 소원의 선악, 공익적인가의 여부를 떠나 소원을 이루게 해준다는 점에서 드래곤볼이 지니는, 노계왕신의 말을 빌리자면 반칙을 썼다는 데에서 나오는 책임이다.[2]

더욱이 정사로 취급하는 드래곤볼 신극장판에서는 드래곤볼을 단순히 빙고 게임의 우승경품으로 사용하거나 미용품 수준으로 사용하기도 해서 GT를 인정하지 않는 팬들조차도 사악룡 편 자체의 설정과 캐릭터들은 꽤나 호평하고 슈퍼에서도 이런 캐릭터의 등장을 바라기도 한다.

"팡…우리는 시험대에 오른 거야. 앞으로는 무언가에 의지하지 않고 우리들만의 힘으로 이 별을…이 우주를 더 좋게 만들어야 해. 우리가 잘 해낸다면 드래곤 볼은 반드시 다시 나타날 거야."

사악룡 편은 드래곤볼 시리즈 전반에 걸쳐 반복되어 온 드래곤볼의 사용 그 자체를 문제시하는 최초의 에피소드라는 점에서 특별한 의미를 지닌다. 기존 드래곤볼 시리즈에서는 드래곤볼이 항상 위기를 타개하는 수단, 혹은 죽은 자를 살리는 만능 도구처럼 사용되어 왔지만, 사악룡 편에서는 그러한 반복적이고 무분별한 소망이 결국 우주의 질서를 어지럽히는 결과를 낳았다는 설정이 도입된다.

엔딩 시점에선 드래곤볼이라는 만능 도구가 사라진 뒤, 인류와 지구가 스스로의 힘으로 평화를 지키고 미래를 만들어가야 한다는 자립의 메시지를 담고 있다. 즉, 사악룡 편은 드래곤볼 의존의 종말을 선언하는 동시에, 자립과 성장을 강조하는 결말로 완성된 것이다. 드래곤볼이 사라졌다는 사실은 끝이 아니라, 오히려 기적에 기대지 않고도 살아갈 수 있는 세계의 시작을 상징하며, 이는 시리즈 전체에 걸쳐 지속되어 온 모험과 성장의 테마를 가장 성숙한 방식으로 매듭짓는 장면이라 할 수 있다.

사악룡편은 기존의 토리야마 아키라가 건립시킨 드래곤볼이란 작품의 연장선상에 있다기에는 상당히 이질적인 느낌이 강했다. 드래곤볼이란 아이템이 토리야마의 원작에서 이토록 무게감 있게 다뤄지지 않은 근본적인 이유는 그것이 토리야마의 스타일이기 때문이었다. 원작에서는 한 번도 드래곤볼에 대해 GT같이 무게감이나 책임 등이 다루어진 적이 없다. 원작 후반부에서야 노계왕신이 "자연의 법칙을 무시한다" 라는 말은 했으나, 그것뿐이었다. 그 외에는 지구의 신이 인간의 욕망때문에 악용될 것을 우려해 봉인시키려 한 적이 있으나 오공같은 선인이 있기에 부활시켜주었다는 정도가 있다. 이 역시 마이너스 에너지나 검은별 드래곤볼에 관한 떡밥은 없었다. 신이 검은 별 드래곤볼에 관해 언급하지도 않았으니 대놓고 급조했다는 느낌을 주는 셈.[3] 전대 신이 이 사실을 알고도 방치했다는건 말이 안되는 수준이다.

오히려 토리야마는 예나 지금이나 드래곤볼이라는 물건을 편리한 도구 정도로만 보았지, GT에 나온 검은별 드래곤볼이나 사악룡같이 남용과 그에 대한 책임을 진중하게 고찰할 물건으로는 생각하지도 않았다. 원작에서도 드래곤볼을 아주 편한 램프의 지니처럼 쓰는 장면은 굉장히 많았다. 드래곤볼 슈퍼에 들어서는 지극히 사적인 용도로 무게감 없이 사용하고, 드래곤볼 슈퍼: 브로리나 드래곤볼 슈퍼: 슈퍼 히어로쯤 가면 아예 부르마가 독점해서 미용목적으로까지 쓰는 모습을 보이는 등 완전히 편리한 장난감 취급. 아예 슈퍼 드래곤볼이라는 상위 드래곤볼까지 등장해서 무제한의 소원을 이루기 위한 아주 사사로운 용도로 신들조차도 거리낌없이 사용하면서 노계왕신의 우려도 무색하게 만든다. 결국 GT의 철학적인 요소와 드라마성은 원작자의 의도였다기보단, 그저 원작에 지나가듯 한 마디 끼워넣은 노계왕신의 일개 대사 한줄이 독자들과 제작진 전원에게 큰 공감을 사 확대해석된 것에 가깝다. 결국 이는 독자적인 드라마로는 제법 훌륭한 테마를 만들어냈지만, 동시에 토리야마가 추구하던 드래곤볼과는 이질적인 물건을 만들어버렸고, 이는 GT 자체에 거리감과 거부감을 느끼는 사람들이 나타나는 가장 큰 이유가 되었다.

DAN DAN이 나오면서 드래곤볼 시리즈 처음부터 Z, GT까지의 회상장면이 나오고 "그런 오공을 모두가 좋아했으니... 이걸로 드래곤볼의 이야기는 끝!" 이라는 나레이션과 더불어, 스크린을 향해 인사를 보내는 오공이 여의봉을 잡고서 근두운을 타고 사라지며 완전히 시리즈가 끝나는데, 이 장면이 팬들에게 '이제 정말로 드래곤볼 시리즈가 끝났구나'라는 여운을 남기며 마지막에는 엄청난 호평을 받는다. GT가 여러 문제점 때문에 비판을 많이 받는 작품이지만 이 결말에 있어서 만큼은 드래곤볼에 가장 잘 어울리는 엔딩이란걸 대부분이 인정한다.[5]

손오공 Jr.의 천하대일무술대회 출전 장면에서 손오공을 기리는 동상이 세워져 있는 것에도 호평이 많다. 원작에서는 지구를 여러번 구했는데도 지구인들에게 전혀 알려져 있지 않던 것과 비교해보면 지구인들도 손오공을 영웅으로 인정하게 되었다는 점에서 큰 의의가 있다.

다만 결말로 도출되는 과정에서 주인공인 손오공이 사라지는 것에 대해서는 호불호가 갈린다.

장대한 인기를 얻었던 원작의 드래곤볼의 결말은 생동감 있는 캐릭터인 손오공의 발자취를 따라가다가 멈출 뿐이다. 우부와 싸우다 말고 훈련을 시켜주겠다며 그를 등에 태우고 우부와 이야기를 하며 날아가는 그의 모습을, 작가는 그저 옆에서 앵글에 담아 보여주다가 '여기까지만 보여 드릴게요. 손오공은 앞으로도 잘 살겠죠 뭐' 라는 듯이 남 얘기하듯 철저히 방관하면서 끝낸다. 지구를 구해낸 위대한 슈퍼 히어로의 이야기를 끝낼 때 가장 쉽게 떠올릴 수 있는 아이디어 중 하나는 장엄한 연출일 것이다. 토리야마 아키라는 전혀 힘을 주지 않는다. 그저 되는 대로 캐릭터를 옆에서 지켜볼 뿐, 저 벽 넘어 현실의 사람들에게 무언가 생각을 말하거나 감정을 유도시키지 않는다.

GT는 이야기를 확실히 닫고 특정한 말과 감정을 도출시키고자 더 이상 이러한 부분을 따르지 않았고, 원작에서 우리가 놓쳤던 것들에 대해서 환기시키고 주목하고자 했다. 드래곤볼이란 아이템이 그러했고, 그로 인한 인물들 간의 관계에서 도출시킬 수 있는 감성적 요소들을 끄집어 내어 드라마틱하게 구성하길 원했다. 인물들의 내면에 조금 더 깊게 들어가서 진지하고 통속적인 대화를 하는 인물들을 그려내려 했다. 허나 색깔을 분명히 하고 일정한 선을 긋는 순간 그 자체에 반발을 가지는 사람들도 있을 수밖에 없었다. 이것이 드래곤볼 GT가 가지는 한계점이라고 할 수 있다.

물론 이는 무작정 단점이라고만 볼 수는 없는 부분이다. 드래곤볼GT는 특정한 메시지를 전달하는 드라마라는 것으로 만들기 위해 자체적인 색채를 입히긴 했지만, 그렇게 나온 작품 자체가 그리 나쁜 작품은 아니었다. 드래곤볼GT는 독자적인 훌륭한 영역을 구축하는 데에는 성공했다. 드래곤볼 GT가 정말 명백한 망작이었다면 현재까지 GT의 팬덤이 남아있을 리가 없었을 것이다. 하지만 현재 GT팬덤은 오히려 정 반대로 드래곤볼계에서도 매우 큰 규모의 팬덤이다. 작품 자체만 놓고 보면 충분히 개성적인 작품이었다.

하지만 문제는 이 작품은 드래곤볼이었고, 드래곤볼다움에 익숙한 팬들에게 있어서는 기존 드래곤볼과 다른 테이스트를 보이는 해당 작품에 대해서는 그 완성도와 아무 상관없이 이질감을 갖는 사람이 속출하는 것은 필연적일 수밖에 없는 과정이었다.

결국 모두를 납득시키기 위해 최선을 다한 결말과 과정이었으나, 너무나 기존 작품과는 달랐던 성향으로 인해 이미 작품을 다른 물건처럼 받아들일 여지가 다분했고, 결과적으로 매력적인 작품임과 동시에 토리야마 아키라의 부재로 인한 드래곤볼의 원작이 가졌던 유니크한 바이브와 색채를 거의 잃은 채, 한 치의 오차도 없는 통속적인 드라마성과 더불어 상투적이고 신파적으로 받아 들여 질 수 있는 요소들이 들어 있다는 점에서 팬층을 다소 분열시키는 작품으로 남았다고 할 수 있다.

3.4. 비판

최종 보스인 일성장군과 조력자이자 라이벌이였던 사성장군을 제외하면 나머지 사악룡들은 탄생 배경이 흥미롭긴 하나 캐릭터성이 적어 인기가 멸종된 수준이고, 최종 보스 일선장군도 Z시절 악역들보다 포스가 떨어지며, GT의 고질병인 빈약한 액션 때문에 비판을 받기도 한다. 또한 갑작스레 튀어나온 사악룡이라는 설정이 그리 무겁게 다루지 않았던 드래곤볼 설정에 이질감만 더했다는 말도 있다.

그리고 사악룡들의 디자인이 정성을 떠나 몰개성하고 못생겨서 디자인에 관해선 불호측이 압도적으로 많고 누가 몇성룡인지도 제대로 모르는 이들이 많다.

전형적인 싸구려 각본으로 혹평도 꽤나 많다. 예시를 들자면 GT의 씬스틸러 중 한 명인 초사이어인 4 오지터가 있다. 오지터의 행적은 말도 안나올 정도로 엉망인데, 나름 초베지트의 전투씬을 오마주한 것으로 보이지만 문제는 베지트의 경우, 궁극적인 목표가 '부우에게 흡수당한 오반 일행의 구출'이었으므로 의도적으로 부우의 신경을 긁으면서 시간을 끈 것이었다. 한 편 본작의 오지터는 단순히 자만하여 그 경거망동을 벌인 것이다. 오마주 대상인 베지트와의 비교자체가 부끄러운 수준. 까고 말해서 미디어믹스에서의 활용을 제외하고 해당 작품내에서만 따지자면 등장의 의의가 전혀 없다고 말할 수 있다.[6] 덤으로 해당 회차에 우부가 오지터를 보고 감탄하며 자신과 퓨전할 것을 요청하는 장면 또한 싸구려 각본의 예시라고 할 수 있겠다.

손오공의 소원 : 궁극의 인조인간 편 때부터 휘말려 무고하게 사망한 지구인들의 부활

[1] 원작에선 단순한 개그요소 내지는 맥거핀으로 남았지만 '마인 부우로 인한 지구 파괴'라는 위기상황에서조차 그 대인배인 노계왕신이 격렬히 만류하는거만 봐도 드래곤볼의 위험성에 대한 명분은 충분히 세워진다.[2] 원작 내 야지로베 또한 신룡이 사망하자 동료들을 부활시킬 수 없다며 한탄하는 오공에게 "어쩔 수 없지. 그게 운명이란 거니까. 병이나 사고로 죽은 사람들도 억울하긴 마찬가지야."라며 오공 일행과 지구인들이 특혜를 받고 있으며 이 드래곤볼이 반칙 기술임을 상기시켰다.[3] 손오공이 어려지는 플롯까지는 토리야마 아키라가 플롯을 제공하긴 했으니 토리야마도 약간은 책임이 있는 셈.[4] 사실 이러한 드래곤볼의 가벼운 사용은 슈퍼가 비판적 평가를 받는 이유 중 하나이긴 하다. GT가 확대 해석으로 이야기에 중심에 들고온 것에 대해 비판 받는다면 반대로 슈퍼는 완전히 비중과 가치를 죽이고 과하게 편리 아이템 화 시킨 것으로 비판 받는 셈.[5] 1997년 방송판 엔딩에서는 오리지널부터 GT까지의 성우들과 스태프들의 이름이 흘러간다. 아쉬운 점이라면 중요한 인물들의 이름이 나오지 않는다는 것.[6] 물론 덕분에 사성룡의 부활이 이루어졌지만 이조차도 곧바로 사성룡이 사망하기에 무의미한 도돌이표 전개로 사성룡의 재등장까지 통으로 의미없는 셈.
