1. 개요

V 사인은 손 검지와 중지를 펼쳐 로마자 V 모양을 만드는 손 동작이다. 前 영국 총리 윈스턴 처칠이 보여준 승리의 V 사인이 많이 알려져 있다.

2. 의미

V 사인은 문화에 따라 다양한 의미가 있다. 제2차 세계 대전 당시에는 'victory(승리)'를 의미했다. 처칠의 유명한 V 사인 역시 2차 세계대전의 승리를 바라는 마음에서 쓴 것이다. 지금도 스포츠에서 우승의 의미로 쓰인다.

1960년대 이후 영국과 미국에서 핵무장 반대 캠페인 등의 반문화운동에서 처음으로 V 사인이 'peace(평화)'로도 의미하게 되었다. 이후 이 평화의 상징인 V 사인은 사진에서의 제스처로 특히 일본에 많이 퍼졌다.[1] 스트로마에의 Peace Or Violence의 영상을 보면 대충 이해가 갈 것이다. 미국에서는 이게 변질되어서 혜어질 때 'peace' 또는 'peace out'을 외치면서 사용하기도 한다.[2]이것을 설명하는 틱톡 영상

동아시아 지역에서 사진을 찍을 때 많이 한다. 본래 서구에서 많이 쓰였지만 이렇게 많이 쓰이게 된 것은 비교적 최근 일이다. 이 기사에 따르면, 위의 'peace'의 의미로 1970년대 일본 젊은 여성층에서 쓰던 것이 1980년대 일본 대중문화의 확산에 따라 동아시아 각국에 퍼지게 되었다고 한다.

영국, 호주, 뉴질랜드, 남아프리카 공화국 등의 영연방과 아일랜드에서는 손등이 상대에게 보이도록 V 사인을 하면 손가락 욕이다. 또한 손등이 보이게 해서 입 양쪽 가에 갖다대면 흡혈귀 같은 사람이라고 조롱하는 뜻이 된다.[3]

한국에서는 영국이나 호주 등에서 욕으로 쓰인다는 사실이 그리 잘 알려져 있지 않으며, 욕으로 쓰지도 않는다. 그래서 V 사인이 욕으로 쓰이는 나라 사람이 한국인과 사진 촬영을 할 때나 한국 사진을 볼 때 V 사인을 보고 흠칫 놀라곤 한다. 영국 내지 영연방 국가에 가서 사진을 찍을 일이 있다면, 손등 방향으로 V 사인을 내미는 행동은 피하는 것이 좋다.

미국이나 그 외 유럽 국가에서도 욕으로 쓰이지 않는다. 미국에서는 이것도 'V 사인'이나 '피스 사인'이라고 부른다. 하지만, 손등이 밖으로 향하면 원래의 승리 또는 평화의 의미보다 멋을 부리거나 혜어질 때 사용하는 것이 더 흔하다. 그리고, V가 위로 향하기보다 오른손 기준으로 V 사인 사용자의 관점에서 10~11시 방향을 향하면서 계속 유지하거나 혜어질 경우 10~11시 방향에서 시작하고 V를 8~9시 방향으로 내리는 동작을 할 수 있다.이것을 보여주는 틱톡 영상 이런 느낌으로 사용하는 건 앞서 말한 것처럼 주로 미국 흑인 문화 또는 힙합계에서 많이 쓴다.

이러한 손동작을 하면 갱스터들이 사용하는 '갱 사인'과 혼용될 수 있다. 대표적으로 2014년 퍼거슨 소요의 원인인 마이클 브라운 총격 사건에서 사망한 마이클 브라운이 생전에 V 사인을 하고 찍은 사진이 존재하는데 이를 두고 V 사인인지 갱 사인인지 찬반 논쟁이 있었다.뉴욕 타임스 보도 이 사건과 연관된 흑인들의 손동작을 갱 사인으로 단정짓는 것을 비판하는 기사 브라질에선 갱단들이 인터넷에 V 사인을 하고 있는 사진을 올린 사람들을 적이라고 단정지어서 살해하기도 한다.#

3.1. 유래에 대한 속설

백년전쟁 때 장궁을 든 영국의 궁병들을 포로로 잡은 프랑스군이 검지와 중지를 잘랐기 때문에 영국군들이 아직 자신들의 손가락이 멀쩡하다고 프랑스군을 조롱하는 의미로 쓴 것이 유래라고 알려져 있다. 그러나 이는 현대에 만들어진 속설로 추정된다. 우선 전쟁용 장궁을 당길 때에는 손가락 2개가 아닌 3개를 사용하고, 백년전쟁 시기의 기록에 손가락을 자르겠다고 위협한 사례는 단 한 번 등장하며 그마저도 검지와 중지가 아닌 세 개를 자르겠다고 했다. 그리고 영국군이 프랑스군을 모욕하려 손가락을 펴 보였다는 기록 또한 찾아볼 수 없다.

사실 전쟁에서 궁수의 손가락을 자르거나 자르겠다고 위협한 일은 세계적으로 종종 있는 일이었다. 가령 투르크 군벌인 이마드 앗딘 장기는 항복을 거부한 요새를 점령한 뒤 보복으로 수비군 궁수들의 엄지를 잘랐다.

유아는 소근육이 발달하지 않아 V 사인을 하지 못한다고 한다.

천안문 6.4 항쟁 당시 베이징 시민들이 민주주의의 승리를 바라며 언론 카메라를 향해 V사인을 그렸다.

러시아 월드컵에서는 한국이 독일을 2:0으로 이겨 V 사인으로 독일을 놀리곤 했다.

해당 포즈를 방향으로 뒤집어서 하면 갸루피스라고 불리는 사인이 된다. IVE의 레이가 SNS에 해당 포즈를 한 이미지를 올린 2022년 대한민국에서 유행했다.

* 1995년에 방송된 KBS 드라마 게임의 한 에피소드에서 전도연이 손가락 하트를 '겸손한 V'라 칭하기도 했다.

쿠르디스탄 노동자당이 자신들의 상징(평화와 승리를 의미)으로 쓰기 때문에, 튀르키예의 우익에서는 V 사인을 테러리즘과 연관있다고 여기는 풍조가 있다. 이 때문에 어느 한국인 관광객이 튀르키예의 공공장소에서 V사인을 했다가 경비원에게 정중히 경고를 받는 사건이 있었다.#
