2016년 윌 우드는 양극성장애 2형의 치료를 시작했다. 이 경험으로 인해 윌의 정신 상태가 안정되며 음악 스타일이 크게 변했고, 그렇게 겪은 자신의 정신적 여정을 모티브로 해 작업하여 선보인 것이 바로 이 앨범.앨범의 주제는 '노멀 앨범' 이라는 제목과 같이 '정상성' 에 대한 비판과 탐구를 담고 있다. 주로 사회에서 요구하는 '정상'에 맞추려는 사람들의 모습을 비판하면서, 블랙 코미디와 풍자를 적극적으로 사용하여 풀어낸 가사도 이 앨범의 특징이라 할 수 있겠다.
피아노를 중심으로 작곡된 포괄적인 장르의 혼합 또한 특징인데, 실험적인 요소가 두드러지는 편. 특히 곡을 작업하면서 윌 우드 본인의 상태를 직접적으로 반영하려 했기에, 곡마다 독특한 요소가 가득한 점이 인상적이다.

4. 여담
이번 앨범부터 아티스트 이름이 Will Wood and the Tapeworms에서 그냥 Will Wood로 바뀌었는데, 이유는 대부분의 라이브 공연은 윌 우드 혼자 했어야 했고, 밴드 멤버들한테 그들의 실제 직장에서 시간 빼서 같이 공연하자고 돈을 줄 여유가 없어서였다. 그래서 the Tapeworms 멤버들이 있는 Will Wood and the Tapeworms로 공연을 잡을 수가 없었고, 윌 우드 본인은 나올 수 있다 약속할 수 있으니 그냥 윌 우드로 이름을 바꾼 것이다.[1]그러나 The Normal Album의 성공과 코로나가 잠잠해진 이후로 공연을 통해 돈을 벌 수 있게 되자 다시 밴드와 함께 라이브를 시작했다. 그래도 스튜디오 앨범들은 모두 함께하고 있었다.
[1] 아티스트 이름을 바꾼다는건 이미 Mr. Fregoli and the Diathesis-Stress Supermodel, Or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Con (An Untitled Track)라는 곡에서 밝혀지긴 했다.
