1. 개요

한돈(韓豚, Korea pork)은 수입산 육류와 구별하여 한국의 돼지고기를 알리고 국산 돼지고기 판촉을 위해 고안된 브랜드 명칭이다. 축산법상 실제 소 품종 중 하나로 인정되면서 동시에 브랜드명으로도 널리 사용 중인 한우와는 달리, 한돈은 한국의 고유 돼지 품종을 가리키는 '한국 돼지(조선돼지, Korean native pig)'와 동일한 것으로 취급되지 않는다. 한돈이라는 브랜드 하에 관리되는 한국 내 돼지 품종은 절대다수가 영국의 요크셔 및 버크셔돼지와 그 교잡종이다.

국내에서 생산되는 돼지고기에 대한 인식을 제고하기 위함이 취지이지만 여러모로 비판도 존재한다.

위생과 품질
과거와 달리 여러 매체를 통해 후진적이며 비위생적인 몇몇 한국 돈사의 실태가 알려진 관계로 본 용어 도입의 실효성을 의심하는 목소리가 있다. 위생감시가 철저하고 대규모 기업화된 서양권 돈사와는 달리 낙후되고 소규모인 한국 돈사의 특성상, 원칙보다는 끼리끼리 봐주기 문화가 존재하여 철저한 이력 관리 및 우수한 육질 또한 보증하기 힘든 것으로 보인다.
언플과 가격 인상
대한민국보다 깨끗하고 체계적으로 발달된 서양 축산농가에서 길러 생산한 돼지고기보다 국내산이 좋다며 방송 프로그램과 광고까지 동원해 고급화를 유도하며 가격을 올리기도 했다. 여러모로 유통업자들의 입김이 안 들어갔다고 단정지을 수 없는 일이다.

한우는 엄연히 품종이다. 따라서 같은 국내산이라도 국내산 한우와 국내산 육우는 구별된다. 하지만, 한돈의 품종은 듀록, 요크셔 등 해외 유래 품종이다. 상술되어 있는 한돈의 영양학적 우수성 또한 그냥 돼지의 영양학적 우수성을 '한돈'의 영양학적 우수성이라며 주어만 바꿔 그대로 홍보 문구에 넣은 장난질인 셈. 한국의 진짜 토종 돼지는 생산성이 높지 않아[1] 제주도 등지에서만 소규모로 사육되므로 소비자 대부분은 YLD(요크셔, 렌드레이스, 듀록), 버크셔 등 해외 품종을 먹게 된다. 꾸준히 한돈 자체 품종 개량을 요구하는 목소리가 나오는 이유다. 또한 돼지가 먹는 배합사료의 대부분은 수입산 옥수수를 사용한다.
