저난이도 랜덤 매칭에서는 의미가 다소 떨어지나, 난이도가 올라가거나 숙련된 유저일 수록 공략법을 철저히 이행하게 되며 이는 게임 실패의 빈도를 확연히 낮춰준다.

소음 : 소음기를 제외한 모든 총성 & 폭발음은 특수 좀비를 포함한 웨이브를 즉시 소환한다. 이는 적대 터렛 & 클레이모어 & 자동차 & 가스통 모두 포함된다. 스웜 방어전은 예외이며, 평상시에만 적용되는 기믹이다. [1][2] 소음기가 뚫려 있을리없는 뉴비는 기본으로 주어지는 소음기 권총 혹은 인게임에서 줍게되는 기관단총 으로 진행하다가 스웜 방어전때 화력 좋은 본 무기를 드는 식으로 플레이해야 수월하다. 이 때문에 평상시 총성을 낸다는 행위는 곧 난이도를 한칸 더 올리고 시작하겠다는 것과 다름이 없다. 쉽게 말해 소음기 업그레이드를 해둔 팀원들에게 엿을 먹이겠다는 최대 빌런인 셈. 대부분이 대륙유저인 랜덤매칭 공방에서는 생각보다 이 기본적인것조차 모른 상태로 사방팔방 어그로를 끌고다니다 자기가 죽으면 음성채팅으로 듣기 거북한 고성을 지르는등의 저급한 수준마저 볼 수 있다. 소음기 없는 유저를 향한 인식이 보통 이렇다보니 아무것도 모르는 뉴비 또한 욕먹기 쉽기 때문에 입문자라면 반드시 숙지해야할 첫번째 사항이다.

스웜 : 대규모 웨이브. 말그대로 엄청난 물량으로 들이닥치는 좀비 무리를 일컬으며 평상시와 달리 타 게임에서 보던 디펜스 형식으로 진행된다. 이들은 목표 오브젝트가 있다면 1순위로 그 곳을 향해 무작정 달려가며, 플레이어 가까이에 도착하면 무리중 일부가 떨어져나와 플레이어를 타겟삼고 일반 좀비로 전환되어 달려온다. 때문에 일반좀비로 전환되기 전에 최대한 많은 숫자를 줄이는게 공략의 관건. 만약 웨이브의 이동 경로에 플레이어가 있을 경우, 몇마리 접근하지도 않았는데 공격모션도 없이 엄청난 틱데미지가 들어온다. 이걸 간과하고 들어갔다가 1초만에 누워버리는 유저들이 상당히 많다. 또한 철창이나 절벽에 뭉쳐진 무리를 잡겠다고 앞에서 이리저리 무빙을 치면서 사격하는 행위 또한 대표적인 뉴비 행동. 뒤에서 사격하는 팀원 입장에서 정말 거슬리고 오인사격 데미지가 만만치 않아 괜히 죽이기라도 했다간 서로 얼굴만 붉히는 일이 잦다.

집합 목표 : 캠페인의 대부분의 목표중 특정 구간에 '집합하라'는 목표가 자주 나온다. 여기서 한 명이라도 집합하지 않으면 다음 구간으로 넘어가질 않고 그 사이 끊임없이 몰려오는 웨이브를 개활지에서 막다가 게임이 터지는 일이 많다. 랜덤 매칭 에서 특히 자주 벌어지는 상황으로, 평소엔 고인물 한두명만 있어도 어느 정도 진행이 되는데 반해 이 상황에선 집합하지 않는 뉴비 단 한명 때문에 세션 자체가 터져버린다. 이럴 때 어쩔 수 없이 집합 안한 뉴비를 팀킬 할 수밖에 없는데, 이게 또 기분 나쁘다고 역팀킬을 가해 내부분열 되는 요인중 하나가 된다. 초보라면 정신없겠지만 틈날때마다 임무 목표를 항상 주시하자.

난이도는 업그레이드에 맞게 : 대부분의 매칭은 3~4난이도 에서 이루어진다. 직업 레벨이 20이하인데 4이상 난이도에 매칭하는 행위 자체가 팀원들은 일단 당신을 눈엣가시라고 여긴다. 이는 뉴비 배척이 아니라 그 반대, 뉴비가 상위 단계에 업혀가려는 행위가 문제가 되는 것. 실력이 아무리 좋고 성공적인 결과를 보여줬다 해도 게임이 한번 크게 말렸다고 가정해보면, '사람'이라면 누구나 본능적으로 직업 레벨이 낮은 유저에게 눈치를 주게 되어있고 해당 유저를 레벨업 욕심이 과한 버스충이라 여길 확률이 압도적으로 높다. 몇번 플레이 해보면 알겠지만 20미만 유저가 조금만 섞여있어도 4난이도를 못깨는 경우가 종종 있고, 아무리 합이 잘맞아도 4이상의 난이도에선 업그레이드 없이는 웨이브를 절대 감당할 수 없을만큼 한계점이 반드시 찾아온다. 적어도 직업 레벨을 올리는 동안만큼은 3난이도를 추천하고, 여기서 모든 총기도 소음기까지는 뚫어놓자. 그 후 직업레벨 25이상에 3난이도가 쉽다고 느껴질 때쯤 4단계로 넘어가면 된다. 직업마다 환생 개념으로 명성 특성을 얻고 다시 1레벨로 초기화하는 기능이 있는데, 이 경우도 4이상 난이도는 지양하는게 좋다.

은신(차폐) & 추가 체력 : 클래스별로 은신(차폐) 또는 추가 체력을 얻는 특성이 있다. 예를 들어 슬래셔의 경우 10마리의 좀비를 빠르게 근접공격으로 죽이게 되면 10초간 좀비의 타겟에서 벗어나는 은신 효과를 얻을 수 있고, 난동꾼은 15킬마다 추가 체력을 얻는다. 이렇듯 클래스 효과를 이용하면 짧은 시간동안 쓰러진 아군을 부활시킨다거나 감염을 제거한다거나 치료를 한다거나 재장전을 할 타임을 벌 수 있다. 또 클래스 특수 아이템이 없는 상황에서 Bull이나 럴커 같은 특수좀비를 쉽게 처리하는데 도움이 된다. 고난이도에서는 차폐나 추가체력없이 바로 동료를 부활시키는 게 매우 어려우므로 이런 특성이 있다면 반드시 챙기자.

근접공격 남발 금지 : PC기준 F버튼, 일명 '밀리(Melee)공격'. 먼저 출시되었던 옆동네 게임과는 다르게 이 게임은 근접 공격 판정이 좋은편이 아니다. 몇회 이상 연속 공격을하면 근접 스테미나가 바닥나며, 이 경우 공격 속도가 매우 느려져 후속타를 그대로 맞게 된다. 팀원 중 학살자가 있어서 2중 밀리 공격이 가능하더라도 3명이상 좀비에게 근접공격을 하게 되면 한대를 반드시 맞고, 스웜 웨이브의 경우 달리면서 오기 때문에 무방비인 뒷통수를 잡히기도 쉽다. 이 말인 즉슨 뉴비의 대표 행동은 이미 지쳐서 허우적거리는 상황에도 끝까지 근접공격만 휘두른다는 것. 은신(차폐) 효과를 얻을 수 있다거나 스턴건 등을 이용해 군중제어를 할 수 있지 않다면, 좀비들에게 둘러쌓이기 전에 밀리공격을 멈추고 안전한 곳으로 빠져야 한다. 또한 특수 좀비들이 인간보다 근접 판정이 더 좋기 때문에 가능하면 총기로 처리해야하며 스웜 좀비무리는 위에 언급됐듯 틱데미지가 들어오므로 뛰어 들어가는 일이 없도록 하자.

피아 식별 : 오인사격만 줄여도 공략 성공률이 올라간다. 앉아서 쏘면 에임도 좁혀지고 아군 피격을 최소화 할 수 있으니 앉아서 쏘는 것이 여러모로 좋다. 이왕이면 벽에 붙어서 사격하고 팀원을 쏘지 않게 주의하자. 특히 폭발성 무기에 각별히 주의해야 한다. 난이도 3이상부터는 정말 눈에 띄게 아파지고 특히 해결사의 폭발탄을 장착한채 연사를 긁으면 팀이 종잇장처럼 순식간에 갈려버린다.

아이템, 럴커 위치 : 캠페인 모든 맵 구석구석에는 '폭파용 장약' & '바이러스 샘플' & 각종 중화기 & 약품이 숨겨져 있다. 이 것들이 등장하는 장소는 특정 장소 내에 랜덤으로 바뀐다. 이러한 장소들을 경험을 쌓으며 기억해두자. 다만 홀로 아이템들을 찾겠다고 뛰어다니면 특수 좀비, 특히 럴커의 한 끼 식사감이 되어버리니 주의. 아이템을 찾았지만 자신이 이미 하나 들고 있을 때는 PC기준 T키를 눌러 파티원이 알아차릴 수 있게 해주는 센스가 필요하다.

개인 행동 : 위에 언급되었지만, 럴커(기습 잡기)와 Bull(돌진 잡기)의 존재로 인해 미션 아이템을 수집하러 혼자다니는 것은 게임오버로 이어지는 지름길이다. 맵 위치와 각도에 따라 럴커를 먼저 보지 못할 경우 혼자 떨어진 플레이어는 매우 취약해진다. 개인 행동을 할 수밖에 없는 상황엔 생존력이 우수한 의무병, 돌격병, 해결사, 파괴자등의 스킬을 활용해야 한다.

헤드라인 에임 : 난이도가 높을수록 몸통의 관통력에 불이익이 있다. 다만 머리는 난이도 불문 일반좀비는(군인좀비를 제외하고) 1방인데다 결정적으로 좀비들의 키가 전부 똑같기 때문에 관통력이 높은 무기는 1발에 서넛마리씩 잡을 수 있어 거치용 기관총 못지 않은 화력을 뿜어낸다. 평소에 헤드를 맞추는 플레이를 하는 고수들은 bull을 드리블 할것도 없이 정면에서 처리해버리는 경우도 더럿 있다.

아이템 분배 : 장비 분배는 주로 '장비 가방'과 '방어 물자'가 가장 영향이 크다. 가방은 장비 스킬 의존도가 높은 직업군[3] 또는 의무병을 1순위로 챙겨준다. 특히 의무병은 전투 특성이 빈약한 대신 당신을 포함한 팀원들의 생존력을 극대화시킬 수 있으므로 꼭 챙겨줘야 한다. 그냥 자기 마음대로 마구 보급품을 남발하는 팀원이 있다면 의무병은 정말 피가 끓고 애간장이 녹는 느낌이다.

좀비 탑 : 좀비 사다리라고도 불리며 스웜 무리가 철창이나 높은 절벽을 기준으로 징그럽게 뭉쳐 사다리처럼 탑을 쌓는 형태를 뜻한다. 좀비 탑을 개인화기로 사격할 때는 뒤에서 사격하는 것 보다 옆에서 좀비들 머리위치에 두고 사격하는 것이 효율적이다. 자세히 보면 좀비들 키가 모두 똑같고 좀비사다리도 가로로 균일한 층을 쌓고 올라가기 때문에 총기 관통력으로 인해 한발당 여러명을 멀티 헤드샷을 할 수 있기 때문이다. 굳이 하층 좀비들이 모두 죽지 않아도 일정 데미지 이상 피해를 입으면 무너지기 때문에 이 방법으로 사다리를 한층씩 걷어내게 되면 위로 올라와 근접하는 좀비들도 없앨 수 있어 효과적이다.

방어 물자 : 쉬운 거점 수비 구역에서 방어 아이템과 브리칭 툴을 아끼고 어려운 거점 수비 구역에서 전략적으로 사용할 수 있다. 자동 터렛을 탄약 리필이 힘든 먼곳에 깔아둔다던지 본격적인 공세도 시작되지 않았는데 박격포를 마구 쏜다던지 하는 행동도 삼가야 한다. 또한 브리칭 툴로 여는 보급 창고는 위치마다 나오는 아이템이 대부분 정해져있는데 메디킷이 어디 지점에 나오는지 알 필요가 있다. '파괴자' 클래스는 20% 확률로 방어 물자를 소비하지 않기에 팀에 파괴자가 있다면 먹지 말고 양보하자.

총기 관통력 : 거치 기관총과 개인화기, 중화기, 총기의 관통력 개념을 이해하고 활용하여 사격하면 효과적이다. 특히 무리 좀비를 상대할 때 좀비 앞 열의 헤드샷을 쏘게 되면 뒷열까지 멀티헤드샷이 가능하므로 연사보다는 반동제어를 통한 빠른 점사가 오히려 효과적이다.

특수 좀비 : 일반 좀비를 제외한 특수 기믹을 가진 단일 개체들이다. 웨이브에 묻혀있는 사이 개체 특유의 사운드를 파악하고 간파하는 것은 고수의 기본. 사운드 플레이만 잘 해줘도 대처가 매우 쉬워진다. 특히 복잡한 대처법은 밑에 서술된다.

바머 : 특수 좀비중에 클레이모어를 몸에 두른 특수부대원 차림, 특유의 방독면 숨소리와 삐빅 소리를 내며 달려오는 친구가 '바머'다. 팀원이 옆에 있건 말건 상관없이 그냥 무턱대고 터뜨려 버리는 유저도 있는가 하면 제압시켜서 마무리를 하러 다가가는데 그걸 또 터뜨려버리는 유저가 있는데, 바머의 다리를 쏴서 쓰러졌을 때 해골 마크가 찍히면 무력화 되었다는 뜻이므로 사격하지 말자. 저난이도 에서는 많이 깎여도 반 칸에서 한칸 정도지만 고난이도 바머는 자칫 풀 체력 팀원 전체를 한번에 눕게 할 만큼 대미지가 어마무시 한 관계로 고난이도에서 무턱대고 근접한 바머를 팡팡 터뜨렸다가는 바로 강퇴 후보에 올라가게 될 것이다. 물자가 귀한 고난이도인 탓도 없지 않아 있지만 무력화 이후 근접공격 마무리는 무기 & 브리칭 차지 & 바이러스 샘플을 드랍한다. 바이러스 샘플은 경험치에 보너스를 주기 때문에 팀 실력이 괜찮다고 판단되면 먹는게 좋다. 물론 욕심은 금물, 정말 우연찮게 무력화된게 아닌이상 멀리 있을 때 터뜨려버리는게 좋다.

불(Bull) : 일반 좀비 무리에 섞인 Bull[4]을 혼자서도 대처할 수 있어야 한다. 대부분 넓은 개활지에 Bull 혼자 있을 땐 쉽게 회피기동을 할 수 있지만, 좀비 무리가 마구 쏟아지는 와중에 그 것도 좁은 장소에서 Bull을 만나면 뉴비는 뇌정지가 와서 그대로 죽는다. 우선 Bull을 드리블 하는 방법으로는, 돌진을 유도하고 대각선이 아니라 좌우 90도 방향으로 꺾어서 움직이는 방법[5], Bull과 마주보고 기둥이나 콘크리트블럭 등의 장애물을 사이에 둔채로 계속 돌거나, 지형 고도를 달리해서 드리블 하는 방법이 있다. Bull의 등은 노출되어 있기 때문에 팀원들에게 등을 보여주게 되면 권총만으로도 쉽게 잡을 수 있다. 돌진을 피한 뒤의 Bull은 벽에 머리를 박고 한참을 멍때리고 있으므로 이 때 주변의 일반 좀비를 빠르게 처리하거나, 아예 Bull의 등을 빠르게 쏘는 등의 우선순위를 바로바로 생각해내야 한다. 이 복잡한 과정을 깔끔하게 타개할 수 있는 학살자 & 난동꾼이 있다면 그들에게 Bull을 넘겨주도록 하자. 참고로 Bull은 고압 전류 트랩에는 돌진마저 멈추지만, 철조망은 무시한 채로 통과할 수 있다.

스크리머 : 뉴비들은 막상 스크리머가 울부짖을 때 딱히 체감되는게 없다고 느껴 처리 우선순위에서 뒤로 미는 경향이 있다. 하지만 스크리머는 긴급상황이 아니고선 반드시 먼저 처리해야하는 특수좀비다. 스크리머를 좀비 디펜스중에 그냥 냅두면 웨이브와는 별개로 사방에서 특수좀비를 포함한 추가 무리가 몰려오는 치명적인 상황에 빠진다. 문제는 광인 난도 이상부터 스크리머 좀비의 소환위치가 난해해져 일반 좀비 무리를 정면으로 뚫고나가 스크리머를 저격해야하는 상황이 빈번하다. 이 상황을 타개할 방법은 '드론의 대가' 20초 후 자동 사냥에 맡기거나, 해결사의 마스킹 수류탄, 위생병의 약물 투여, 다른 클래스의 차폐 기능들을 활용해 무리 사이를 뚫고나가 저격하는 것이다.

쥐 떼 : 호드모드 또는 캠페인의 디펜스 상황에선 스폰되지 않는 유휴상황 특수 개체. 평상시 길을 뚫거나 탐색할 때 종종 나타난다. 특유의 쥐소리 덕분에 멀리서도 쉽게 파악이 가능하지만, 쥐 떼는 플레이어를 보거나 공격당하면 빠른 속도로 접근해 덮친 뒤 럴커처럼 즉시 무력화 시키고 죽을 때까지 지속 데미지를 입힌다. 문제는 고난이도부터 쥐 떼를 일반 총기로는 거의 못잡는다는 것. 가장 확실하고 빠르게 처리하려면 폭발관련 무기나 장비를 쓰면 되는데, 이건 이거 나름대로 소음을 발생시켜 추가 웨이브를 강제하게 만드는 악순환이 될 수 있다. 소음 없이 깔끔하게 정리하는 법은 3가지다. 첫번째로 화염 방사기, 두번째 파괴자 화염병, 세번째 해결사 폭발탄이다. 화염 방사기는 일단 잘 나오지도 않을 뿐더러 기껏해야 한두번 등장하는 쥐 떼 때문에 화염 방사기만 억지로 들고다니는 것도 무리가 있고 파괴자의 경우 화염병보다 클레이모어 채택률이 훨씬 높아 기대하기 어렵다. 만일 쥐 떼가 지나가야 하는 길목에서 좀 떨어져있으면 굳이 건들지 않는게 좋고, 길을 아예 틀어막아 무조건 잡아야한다면 위 3가지 방법으로 빠르게 지워버리고, 소음이 일어났다면 웨이브 방어를 즉시 준비하자.

고난이도 : 스크리머가 고난이도에서 악명을 떨치는 결정적인 이유는 일반 좀비 때문이다. 일반 좀비도 이 단계에선 3방에 플레이어를 눕히는 지옥같은 맛을 보여주기 때문. 단 한대도 맞지 않겠다는 각오와 실력이 필요하기 때문에 클래스 & 무기 업그레이드 없이 업혀간다는 생각으로 고난이도에 대뜸 도전하는 불상사가 없길 바란다.

마킹 : 뉴비의 경우 갑자기 고인물 팀원이 아무것도 없는 이곳저곳에 계속 마킹을 해대는걸 볼 수 있을 것이다. 마킹을 이용해 직접 뛰어가지 않고도 숨겨진 아이템을 찾기 위한 행동이며, 기본키는 T키로 특수좀비 및 중요 아이템 그리고 어디에 가야할지도 지시할수 있는 화살표가 생기기에 굉장히 중요하며 자신은 발견했지만 아군이 보지못한 적을 빨간테두리로, 아이템은 파란테두리로 표시한다. 특히나 고 난이도에서는 아군과 아이템, 목표물의 테두리 및 거리를 더이상 가르쳐 주지않기에 웬만한 위치의 물건은 외워야하며 뭔가를 발견하면 마킹을 무조건적으로 해야하고 아군식별에 유의해야 하며 웬만하면 단독행동을 삼가도록 하자.

탄약 보급 제한 : 탄 박스는 난이도 3부터 제한이 있어서 전략적으로 보충해야한다. 보조무기 탄 사용후 탄을 보충해도 탄약박스가 줄어드니 보조 무기 중 썸퍼 유탄 발사기로 웨이브를 대부분 막는 것은 불가능 해졌다. 탄약 상자를 자세히 보면 탄 통이 하나하나씩 사라지는걸 볼 수 있고, 이게 전부 소진되면 해당 탄박스는 더이상 이용할 수 없다.[6] 특히 탄소모가 심한 경기관총이나 불펍 소총을 완전 소진후 보급할 경우 한번에 6개 이상이 통째로 사라지는 마법을 볼 수 있으니 총기 선정에도 신중해야 한다.

게임 내 허용되는 요소로, 메딕이 부활시에 체력이 25% 회복되는 퍽을 이용해서, 아군 피가 적으면 총을 쏴 무력화시키고 다시 부활시키는 방법이 있다.(참고로 높은 난이도에서는 2번만 무력화되면 아예 죽어버리니 일부러 하진 말자.) 특정 거점수비 지역에 진입하기 전에 우리편을 무력화시키고 거점수비지역에서 부활하는 방법도 있다.

7. 기타

몇몇 안티바이러스 소프트웨어와 충돌하여 온라인 연결이 되지 않는 경우가 있다. 이 경우 월드 워 Z의 설치된 폴더를 검사 예외로 지정하고, 방화벽 설정을 허용하거나, 안티바이러스 소프트웨어내 게임 모드와 같은 기능을 사용하면 대부분 해결이 가능하다.
