1. 개요

황토색의 일종을 대중적, 관용적으로 이르는 말. 모래와 비슷한 색깔로 주로 중동 국가의 군대와 거기에 파병된 해외 군대가 사용하는 위장색이다. 군복, 전차, 장갑차 할 것없이 이 색깔을 사용한다. 언제부터 사용됐는지는 불명이지만 이라크 전쟁 시기부터 많이 보이기 시작했다.

미군이 애용한다. 중동 지역 또한 대부분의 풍경이 사막이기 때문에 중동 지역 작전에서도 효과적이며, 미국 서부 지역 역시 드넓은 사막 지형이기 때문에 사막색이 조화를 이룬다. 대한민국에서는 주로 누런 갈대밭과 해수욕장의 모래사장, 그리고 추수 시즌의 논두렁(...)에서 조화를 이룬다.

북한의 M-2020도 최초 등장 당시 사막색 도색을 했기 때문에 논란이 되었다. 해당 문서 참조.

총에도 사막색으로 도색한 경우를 흔하게 볼 수 있다. 보통 FDE(Flat Dark Earth)라고 지칭한다. 본래 목적인 위장 이외에도 일조량이 큰 사막에서 빛을 잘 흡수하여 빨리 뜨거워지는 검은색 총기에 비해 과열이 덜 된다는 이점이 있다.

기괴하게도 조선인민군 전략군의 군복 색상으로 채택되었다. 북한에는 딱히 사막이라고 할 만한 지형도 없고, 전략군이 중요하다면 더 그 지형에 알맞은 위장 패턴을 채용하면 되는데 왜 사막색을 채택했는지는 의문.[2]

4.1. 데저트 핑크

영국군과 그 영향을 받은 영연방 국가들 고유의 도색으로, 이 도색의 역사는 2차 세계대전 북아프리카 전역에서 시작되었다. 당시 북아프리카에 주둔해 있던 연합군은 이탈리아 및 독일의 아프리카 군단과 교전했는데, 작전 지역은 광활한 사막 지형으로 모래 언덕, 바위, 건조한 황무지가 주요 환경이었고, 사막의 햇빛 반사와 색조는 일반적인 카키색, 올리브색등의 색깔로는 눈에 띌 수 있었다.

그래서 SAS가 장거리 정찰과 기습공격에 나설 때, 기존 군용색이 아닌 데저트 핑크 같은 밝은 분홍빛 또는 살구색 계열의 도색을 차량에 적용하기 시작했는데 이게 효과가 있다는 게 밝혀지면서 영국군들은 지프, 트럭뿐만 아니라 북아프리카에 주둔해 있던 호커 허리케인이나 P-40 워호크 등의 전투기들까지 데저트 핑크로 칠하기 시작했다.

세계대전이 끝나고 이런 데저트 핑크 도색은 다시 묻혔는데 1991년, 걸프 전쟁이 발발하며, 데저트 핑크는 사막의 폭풍 작전에 참가하는 영국 왕립공군의 파나비아 토네이도에 칠해지기 시작했다. 이유는 다음과 같았다. 데저트 핑크 색으로 칠한 장비는 먼 거리에서 모래 먼지와 구분이 어려우며, 사막의 강한 태양 아래에서도 빛 반사율이 낮아 은폐성이 확보되었기 때문이다. 실제로 그나마 최근 사례를 가져와보자면 이라크 전쟁에서도 영국 공군 소속의 파나비아 토네이도가 데저트 핑크 계열의 단색 위장으로 도색하고 활약했다는 분석도 있다. 물론 실질적으로 현대 군대는 디지털 위장이나 다중분광 위장으로 전환 중이지만, 데저트 핑크는 역사적 상징성과 독창성 때문에 밀리터리 컬렉터 및 재연 분야에서 여전히 인기가 있으며, 특히 SAS의 전통과 특수작전 미학의 상징처럼 여겨진다.
