최근 들어 맥라렌 MP4/4를 두고서 이 차의 진짜 설계자가 누구인가에 대한 갑론을박이 있었는데, 1986년 맥라렌 팀의 수장이었던 론 데니스의 제안으로 브라밤에서 맥라렌으로 이적해, 이전에 존 바나드(John Barnard)의 자리였던 기술 감독을 맡으면서 이 차 개발에 참가했던 고든 머레이 본인은 이 차를 두고 자신의 전작 브라밤 BT55의 설계를 그대로 계승한 차라고 주장하고 있으며, 당시 맥라렌 디자인 팀의 개발 총 책임자였던 미국인 디자이너 스티브 니콜스(Steve Nichols)는, "이 차는 BT55와 연관이 없으며 MP4/3를 멕라렌이 팀으로써 다 같이 개량해 완성한 차다."라고 주장하고 있다.

실제로는 MP4/4의 전체 설계를 맥라렌의 셰프 디자이너이자 엔지니어링 디자이너였던 스티브 니콜스가 책임지고 있었고 론 데니스는 니콜스에게 섀시 디자인 등에 대한 전권을 부여하였으며, 디자인 팀에 뒤늦게 합류한 고든 머레이는 기술 감독으로서 도면 사무실과 생산 라인을 이동하며 자료들을 전달해주는 연락책일 뿐이었다. 때문에 MP4/4에 대한 머레이의 주장은 자신이 맡았던 일을 과대평가하여 본인 혼자서 이뤄낸 성과라고 선을 그은 것이며 이는 당시 함께 개발에 임했던 팀원들을 무시하는 행태이자 얕잡아 보는 것이 아닐 수 없다.
