설문해자에는 귀신의 머리를 한 발톱 달린 호랑이의 형상이라 풀이하였으나, 고문자의 형태를 미루어 보아 막대기를 든 귀신의 형상이라 추정한다. 선진 시대에는 威(위엄 위)와 혼용되었다.
