1. 개요
미국의 블루 아이드 소울 밴드 와일드 체리의 싱글이며 이들의 데뷔 앨범 Wild Cherry의 첫 싱글로 1976년 4월에 발매되었다. 1970년대 Funk 장르에서 가장 유명한 곡 중 하나이다.무명시절 업소에서 노래를 부르고 있었는데 반응이 좋지 못했고, 그때 흑인 진상이 '흰둥아 펑크 연주하라고!'(Play that funky music, white boy)라는 말에 영감을 받아 쓴곡이다.
오하이오 플레이어스의 영향을 강하게 받은 곡이다.
2. 상세
와일드체리는 미국의 5인조 펑크록 밴드이며 1970년 결성했으나 데뷔 앨범인 셀프타이틀 앨범을 발매한건 무려 6년이나 늦은 1976년이었으며 그때까지 수시로 맴버가 교체되었다. 보컬이자 리더인 롭 파르시만이 유일한 원년맴버. 데뷔 앨범과 이와 함께 발매한 싱글로 빌보드에 이름을 올리며 스타가 되었으나 이후 낸 앨범과 싱글들 모두 흥행에 대참패하면서 금세 대중들에게서 잊혀졌고 결국 1979년에 해체되었다.잠깐 활동하며 명곡 한 곡과 명반 한 장만 달랑 내놓고 사라진만큼 미국 현지에서는 원 히트 원더 내지 비운의 밴드로 취급하며 아쉬워하고 있다. 그런만큼 노래도 좋고 실력도 좋기에 많은 록 리스너들이 지금까지도 그들을 그리워하고 있으며, 한국에서는 기타와 베이스를 연습할때 반드시 거쳐가는 밴드 중 하나이다.
밴드 해제 후 롭은 프로듀서로 전향하여 어덜트 컨템포러리 분야에서 활동했으며, 바비 콜드웰, 스티브 올리버, 윌 도나토 등의 저명한 소울 뮤지션들과 함께 일했다. 재결성할 생각은 없는 듯. 리드 기타리스트였던 브라이언 바셋은 이후 블루스 밴드인 포거트(Foghat)에 소속되어 활동중이고, 2010년부터는 데이토나 주립대학(Daytona State College)에서 교수로 재직중이다. 서브 보컬 겸 서브 기타리스트였던 도니 아이리스는 이후 자신의 밴드인 크루저스(Cruisers)를 결성하여 솔로활동과 병행하며 활동중이다. 키보디스트였던 마크 에이브섹은 해체 이후 한동안 상술했던 크루저스 패밀리에 소속되어 도니에게 많은 가사들과 곡들을 제공해줬으며, 1995년에는 사법시험에 합격하여 저작권 전문 변호사로 활동중이다.

빌보드 R&B 차트에서 1976년 9월 첫째 주부터 둘째 주까지 2주 연속 1위, 빌보드 핫 100에서 1976년 9월 셋째 주부터 10월 첫째 주까지 3주 연속 1위를 기록했다.1976년 빌보드 핫 100 연말 차트에선 5위, 1958년~2018년 빌보드 핫 100 올타임 차트에선 93위에 올랐다.
