1. 개요

1980년 10월 24일 발매된 오케스트럴 머뉴버즈 인 더 다크의 두 번째 스튜디오 앨범

2. 상세

1980년, 1집이 성공적으로 발매되면서 밴드는 영국 내에서 투어를 돌면서 좋은 반응을 얻었고[2], 이를 발판으로 미국 진출을 시도했지만, 실패로 돌아가면서 빠르게 영국으로 돌아오게 된다.

복귀한 직후인 1980년 6월, 앤디 맥클러스키와 폴 험프리스는 그라모폰 스튜디오에서 새로운 곡을 창작하는데 여념했다. 앨범의 분위기는 조이 디비전과 이안 커티스의 영향을 받아 어두운 분위기로 잡혔다. 밴드는 우선 1집 작업 중에 만들었다가 남은 Enola Gay, Motion and Heart와 The Id 시절 작곡했던 The Misunderstanding과 같은 곡들을 가져와 작업했다. 더불어 2nd Thought, Statues, Promise를 비롯한 신규 곡들을 포함해 7월에 9개의 곡이 녹음되자, 딘디스크는 1980년 크리스마스에 2집 발매를 제안하게 된다.

곡의 초기 버전이 완성되면서, 밴드는 보컬과 오버 더빙 작업을 위해 리지 팜 스튜디오로 이동했다. 리지 팜에서 앤디와 폴은 싱글 발매용 곡을 Enola Gay로 정하지만, 곡을 완성하는데 어려움을 느끼고 Electricity를 새로 녹음하기로 결정한다. 그러나 최종적으로 싱글은 Enola Gay로 결정된다. 작업 도중 앨범 재킷의 디자이너였던 피터 새빌이 밴드에 단정한 옷차림을 입을 것을 제안하면서, 오늘날 OMD의 이미지가 탄생한다.

리지 팜에서 4주 간 작업을 마친 후, 밴드는 믹싱 작업을 위해 애드비전 스튜디오로 이동한다. 애드비전 스튜디오에서 특히 Enola Gay의 믹싱 작업에 여념하지만, 딘디스크의 압박과 함께 앤디의 불안감 때문에 곡이 좌초될 위기에 놓이기도 한다. 그러나 결국 마이크 하울렛의 노력으로 곡이 완성되었고, 1980년 9월에 발매하는데 성공한다.

1980년 10월, 앨범이 발매되었고, 평론계의 저평가와 다르게 영국 앨범 차트 6위에 오르는 등 상업적으로는 큰 성과를 거두며 성공가도를 달리게 된다.

OMD의 두 번째 LP Organisation은 불과 6개월 뒤에 서둘러 발매되었고, 실제로도 그렇게 들린다. 보통 두 번째 앨범을 서둘러 내는 경우란, 밴드가 겁을 먹고 이전과 같은 것을 재빨리 반복하거나, 혹은 순진한 눈빛으로 차트 스타덤을 노리는 시도를 의미한다. 그러나 OMD에게 그것은 스포트라이트에서 물러나, 의도적으로 어두운 앨범을 만들기 위해 재정비하는 것을 의미했다.
OMD's second LP Organisation was hastily released six months later, and it sure sounds like it. Typically, a sophomore rush job means a band is cowardly -quickly rolling out more of the same- or taking a wide-eyed bid at chart stardom. For OMD, it meant recoiling from the spotlight, regrouping to make a willfully dark album.
OMD의 데뷔 앨범이 이 밴드가 싱글뿐 아니라 정규 음반에서도 충분히 성공할 수 있음을 보여주었다면, Organisation은 그 판돈을 한층 더 올려, 이들을 창의적 혁신가이자 동시에 라디오 친화적인 팝 거물이라는 부러운 위치에 올려놓았다. … 그러나 Organisation은 원히트 원더와는 거리가 멀게도, 여러 보석 같은 곡들로 가득 차 있으며, 밴드의 폭과 역량이 계속 확장되고 있음을 보여준다.
If OMD's debut album showed the band could succeed just as well on full-length efforts as singles, Organisation upped the ante even further, situating the band in the enviable position of at once being creative innovators and radio-friendly pop giants. … Far from being a one-hit wonder, though, Organisation is packed with a number of gems, showing the band's reach and ability continuing to increase.

1집 이후 8개월 만에 나온 앨범인 만큼, 완성도에 있어서 아쉽다는 평이 있지만, 잊힌 명반으로 꼽는 평론가들도 많다. 베로니카 바시카[5]는 이 앨범을 미니멀 웨이브라는 장르 성립에 지대한 영향을 준 앨범 중 하나로 꼽았다.[6]

그외에도 디페시 모드[7], 폴 반 다이크[8], 노 다웃의 토니 카날[9], LCD 사운드시스템의 제임스 머피[10] 등의 가수들에게 영향을 끼쳤다.
