1. 개요
오슬로 국립대학 사회인류학 교수. 스칸디나비아를 대표하는 인문학자이다. 주요 연구 분야는 세계화, 다문화주의, 생태주의 등이며, 30년 동안 60여 권의 책과 800여 권의 학술서를 썼다. 그의 학술서는 30개 이상의 언어로 번역되어 전 세계 많은 학교에서 인류학 교과서로 사용되고 있다. 연구의 공로로 주요한 상을 받는 동시에 인류학을 학문에서 벗어나 사람들의 삶으로 끌어낸 타고난 커뮤니케이터이기도 하다.2016년 췌장암 말기 선고를 받은 후에도 활발히 집필과 강연을 이어가다 2024년 11월 사망하였다.
