[ruby(王, ruby=Wáng)][ruby(國, ruby=Guó)][ruby(維, ruby=wéi)], 1877~1927청말 민국초의 인문학자. 저장성 하이닝시 출신이다. 문학 방면에서는 중국 전통과 서구의 문학론을 정립하여 새로운 문학관을 확립하였고, 역사학 방면에서는 고고학적 업적을 중국 고대사와 연결시켜 많은 성과를 거두었다.
2. 생애
본래의 이름은 국정(國禎)이다. 유년기에는 전통적인 교육을 받다가 청일전쟁을 계기로 신식 학문에 눈을 뜬다. 이후 1898년 상하이의 동문학사(東文學社)에서 외국어, 서양 철학, 문학 등의 신학문을 본격적으로 습득하였다.1903~1905년, 통주사범학당 및 강소사범학당 등에 부임하면서 서양 철학에 천착하여 임마누엘 칸트와 아르투어 쇼펜하우어 등의 저작을 중국어로 번역하는데 힘을 기울였다. 그러다 서양 철학에 회의를 느끼고 1907년부터는 중국 문학 방면으로 연구를 전환하여 중국 시가에 대한 평론집인 『인간사화(人間詞話)』와 희곡을 연구한 『송원희곡고(宋元戱曲考)』 등을 발간한다.
신해혁명 이후로는 역사학으로 연구를 전환하여 갑골 문자 및 상주시대의 고대 제도 등에 천착, 여러 성과를 올리며 갑골사당(甲骨四堂)[1] 중 한 사람으로 추앙받는다. 말년에는 청화학교 국학연구소에서 학생들을 가르치면서 중국 서북지역 및 요, 금, 원 등의 역사를 연구하다가, 장제스의 북벌 등과 같은 정치적 혼란에 비관하여 이화원 곤명호에 투신자살하였다.

4. 여담
- 개인적으로 아르투어 쇼펜하우어의 사상을 가장 좋아했다고 알려져 있다.
- 그 자신도 늘 지적할 정도로 어릴 때부터 매우 병약하였다. 한 번은 일본 유학 중에 각기병에 시달려서 하고자 하던 공부를 마치지 못하고 귀국을 했을 정도였다. 이러한 건강적 요소는 그가 항상 삶에서 우울감에 시달리는 중대한 원인 중 하나로 꼽힌다.
- 선통제의 스승이 된 적이 있다. 이때가 1923년으로 임명된 직위는 남서방행주(南書房行走). 이 직위를 맡은 후로 자금성 내의 서적들이나 제기 및 여러 보물들을 조사, 감정하고 이를 목록화하는 일들을 하였다.
- 남서방행주를 맡은 것에서 짐작할 수 있겠지만, 중화민국이 들어선 후에도 청에 대한 강한 충성심을 가지고 있었다. 스스로를 이미 존재하지 않는 청나라의 신하라 칭했고 1924년 2차 직봉전쟁 시기 풍옥상의 북경정변으로 인해 자금성에서 퇴거하는 선통제를 시위했으며, 인생의 말년에 선통제의 권유를 받고 청화학교 국학연구원의 교수를 맡기도 했다.
- 이태준(소설가)의 작품 <해방전후>(1946)에서 언급된다. 이태준 본인 혹은 그를 대변하는 인물로 추측되는 작 중 인물인 현의 독백에 따르면, 그는 일본에 가서 명곡(明曲)에 대학 강연이 있었을 때, 그는 청나라식으로 도야지(돼지) 꼬리 같은 편발을 그냥 드리우고 있었다고 한다. 일본의 학생들은 킬킬 웃었으나 현 그 본인은 그의 전조(前朝)[5]에 대한 숭의를 대단하다고 생각하고, 그 인격을 우러러보았다고 한다.
- 집안 여인들이 단명하는 징크스가 있었다. 친모는 그가 네 살 때, 장녀는 태어난 지 석 달이 좀 못 되었을 때, 첫 아내는 결혼 10년 만에 사망했다. 재혼한 부인이 낳은 장녀도 반 년이 채 못되어 숨을 거두었고, 사녀와 오녀, 장손녀들도 몇 개월에서 세 살 안쪽 나이로 요절하였다. 이랬던 까닭에 왕국유 본인도 장손녀가 죽은 후 자기 집안에 태어나는 여자들이 매번 잘못되는 것이 이해가 안 된다고 말했을 정도였다.
- 학문을 함에 있어 하지 말아야 할 것으로 여섯 가지를 들었다.不放言高論고담준론 하지 말라.不攻擊古人옛 사람을 공격하지 말라.不議論他人短長다른 사람의 장단점을 논하지 말라.不吹噓허풍떨지 말라.不誇淵博박학다식하다고 자랑하지 말라.不抄襲他人言論다른 사람의 논의를 베끼지 말라.
