1. 개요

Username

특정 정보통신 시스템에 접속할 때 사용자를 식별하기 위해 입력하는 고유 문자열, 즉 사용자명(username)이다. 인터넷에서 활동할 때 쓰는 이름과도 같은 것으로, 비밀번호와 함께 특정 창에 입력하면 로그인하여 사용자의 계정과 시스템에 접근 권한을 제공한다. 사용자명이 겉으로 표시되는 식별이름이라면 비밀번호는 해당 사용자명에 접근하기 위한 암호이다.

한국에서는 이를 프로그래밍 용어인 식별자(Identifier)에서 따와서 '아이디' 혹은 '아디'라고 부르는데, 영미권에서 ID라고 하면 주로 신원 확인(Identification)이나 신분증(ID card) 등을 의미하기에 혼란을 줄 수 있어 민감해질 수 있는 사안이라 조심해야 한다. 그나마 혼란을 회피하려면 Login[1] ID나 User ID[2] 등의 실제 신분이 아닌 전자 통신 상황의 '식별자'임을 인지시키는 맥락을 추가해야 한다. 다만 이쪽 역시 일상적으로 자주 쓰인다기보다는 프로그래밍 용어에 가까우므로, 우리가 생각하는 사용자명처럼 사용되지 않는 경우도 있어 개발자가 아니라면 username 쪽을 사용하는 것이 좋다.

참고로, 식별자의 기능이 없는 '별명'을 한국에서 '닉네임(nickname)'혹은 '닉'이라고 표현하는 경우가 있는데, 외국에서는 'nickname'은 실제 이름에 대한 친근하거나 우스꽝스러운 '별명'을 의미하기도 한다. 따라서 좀 불편하게 느껴지겠지만, 웹사이트라면 표시명(display name, screen name), 비디오 게임이라면 인게임명(IGN, in-game name) 이런 식으로 사용하기 때문에 만약 더 정확한 맥락이 필요하다면 '닉'보다는 '표시명' 혹은 '인게임명'이라고 말하는 것이 좋다.

주로 보안 상 로그인에 사용되는 사용자명 역시 노출되지 않는 측면이 유리하기 때문에, 개성 측면을 제외하고서도 따로 표시명을 설정해 놓는 웹사이트도 많다. 고유한 표시명을 유튜브와 같이 '핸들(handle)[3]'이라고 표시하기도 한다.

2. 유형

상당수의 사이트는 ID를 만들 때 글자 수 제한을 두며 사용할 수 있는 글자도 알파벳과 숫자, 일부 특수문자(-,_)로 한정한다. 다만 과거의 일부 사이트에선 한글로도 아이디를 생성할 수 있었다. 사용자 식별수단이라는 ID의 특성상 대부분 중복을 허락하지 않기 때문에 ID를 처음 지을 때는 나름의 상상력을 필요로 한다. 사람들이 많이 짓는 ID의 유형(?)을 살펴보면 다음과 같다.

2.1. 이름 + 숫자

한국에서 가장 많이 보이는 유형이다. 한국과 미국의 합동 정보기관 회의에서 이런 조합으로 메일주소, 아이디를 생성한 남한과 북한 유저가 특정된다고 한다. 이유로는 성을 제외하면 두 글자에 동명이인이 너무 많아서 구별을 위해 생년월일등을 추가하는 경향이 있다고 설명했다. 북한의 사이버부대는 이를 인지하고 이후 그러한 사용빈도가 사라지고 있다고 했다.

숫자는 보통 4자리가 가장 많으며 자신에게 의미있는 숫자를 선택하여 붙이는 경우가 많다. 생일이 가장 흔하다. 그밖에 (ID 생성 시기의) 나이, 특정 년도, 전화번호, 기념일 등을 쓰기도 한다.

그 사람의 실명과 약간의 신상을 알고 있다면 기억하기 쉬우며 머리를 쓰지 않아도 짓기 가장 쉽고 중복 가능성이 제일 적다는 것이 장점이다.[4] 일부 사이트는 특정되지 않은 영단어와 0000부터 9999까지 1만개의 수 조합으로 아이디를 자동 생성하기도 한다.

단점이라면 ID가 자주 드러나는 게임 등의 사이트에서 닉네임으로 쓰기에는 다소 무미건조할 수 있다.

2.2. 단어

닉네임이 드러나는 인터넷 사이트에서 닉네임을 돋보이기 위해 상상력을 동원하여 의미있는 단어를 끌어오거나 약간 변형하여 사용한다. 주로 멋있어 보이는 영어 등 외국어 단어들이 많이 쓰인다. 실제 뜻보다는 어감을 더 많이 고려하는 편이다.

상상력에 따라 중복에 걸릴 확률이 상당히 갈리는 유형으로, 상상력도 좋고 운이 좋은 경우 외우기 쉬우면서도 전세계 어느 사이트에 가서도 유일한 ID가 될 수도 있지만 상상력도 운도 나쁜 경우 근처 사이트에서마저 중복에 걸리거나 심지어는 아예 사용이 금지될 가능성도 있다. 뒤에 숫자를 붙여서 중복을 막기도 한다.

2.3. 한영 전환 단어

이를테면 이름이 홍길동일 경우 한/영키를 눌러 그대로 홍길동을 쳐서 ghdrlfehd이라고 짓는 식이다. 영어를 몰라도 지을 수 있다는 가장 큰 장점이 있지만 중복에 걸릴 가능성이 크므로 숫자를 추가로 붙이는 경우가 많다.

단점은 아이디를 다른 사람에게 알려줄 때 "한영키 누르고 한글로 OOO라고 치세요" 식의 설명을 꼭 붙여야 한다는 것. 그래도 오히려 희귀하거나 긴 영어 단어에 비하면 알려주기 쉬운 편이다.

서로 사용하는 자판의 종류가 다른 경우(한글 두벌식/세벌식 혹은 영문 QWERTY/드보락) 의도한 것과 다르게 입력될 가능성이 충분하다.

2.4. 숫자

말 그대로 숫자만 사용하는 유형. 기억하기 어렵다는 것이 장점이자 단점.

첫 문자를 알파벳으로 강제하는 경우 이런 유형의 ID는 쓸 수 없다.

2.5. 이메일 주소

이전에는 아이디를 별도로 생성했으나 2010년대부터는 보안상의 이유로 메일주소를 사용하며 웹페이지가 고도화되면서 이메일 인증 기능을 넣어 회원가입을 처리하고 암호는 영문 대소문자, 숫자, 특수문자를 포함하여 무작위 배열로 난수화로 처리하기도 한다.

2.6. 기타

이름의 어절을 분할에서 그에 맞는 뜻 등을 가진 영어단어를 쓰기도 한다. 예를 들면 이름이 철수일때, 철을 iron, 수를 물 수로 생각하고 water로 하여 ironwater와 같이 짓는 식.

차 번호나 휴대폰 번호, 가족 구성원 이름의 이니셜을 조합하거나, 자신이 어렸을 때부터 키우던 애완동물 이름을 쓰거나, 출신 학교 이름이나 학번을 토대로 영어와 숫자를 조합하기도 한다. 이름 중 숫자나 알파벳 한 글자로 치환 가능한 음절이 있다면 그대로 치환하기도 한다. 오를 oh가 아닌 o, 5로 쓰는 등.

의미없어 보이는 알파벳 배열, 숫자+알파벳, -와 _ 특수문자의 적극 사용형 등이 있다. 난수 생성기, 키보드를 막 쳐서 나온 문자열 중 그나마 마음에 드는 문자열을 그대로 선택하기도 한다.

이름 이니셜, 한영 전환 단어 등을 만들고 순서를 거꾸로 배열해서 만들기도 하며, 특정 단어를 두세번 반복해서 쓰기도 한다.

3. 주의사항

숫자는 기억하기 쉽게 자기 신상과 관련된 것을 쓰는 경우가 많은데 신상 노출의 위험이 있다. 싸이월드에서는 자신의 휴대 전화 번호만 사용하여 아이디를 짓는 경우가 많이 보인다. 이 경우, 특히 싸이월드에서는 본명과 휴대전화 번호가 통째로 드러나기 때문에 신상이 아주 쉽게 털릴 수 있다. 이름을 ID로 쓰는 것 역시 마찬가지다.

특히 당부하는 것은 절대로 아이디 뒷자리의 숫자를 그대로 비밀번호로 쓰지 말자는 것이다. 은행권에선 보안상의 이유로 숫자 그대로 비밀번호로 쓰는 것 자체가 금지되어 있다.

일반적으로 아이디를 여러 개 만들면 기억하기 힘들기 때문에 통일시키는 경우도 많다. 그런 경우 한 곳이 해킹당했을 때 같이 피해를 보거나 신상털이 등에 취약할 수 있다.

4. 아이디 변경과 재사용

아이디는 원칙적으로 변경이 불가능하지만 특히 이메일 아이디는 변경이 가능한 경우가 있다.

계정을 탈퇴한 경우 아이디 재사용이 가능한 사이트도 있고, 불가능한 사이트도 있다. 아이디 재사용이 불가능한 경우 본인과 타인 모두 재사용이 불가능한 것이 일반적이다.

5. 생성

일반적인 웹사이트 계정의 생성은 가입을 통해 가능하다. 웹사이트의 가입 절차에 따라 아이디, 비밀번호, 각종 개인정보를 입력하면 웹사이트는 데이터베이스에 해당 정보를 저장하여 계정을 생성한다. 소셜 로그인을 이용하면 소셜 네트워크 서비스에 등록되어 있는 정보를 바로 웹사이트로 넘길 수 있기 때문에 가입 절차가 더 간편하다. 계정을 생성하면 로그인을 통해 계정에 접근할 수 있다.

웹사이트 관리자의 계정이나 학교, 기업 계정처럼 회원가입 이외에도 여러 가지의 계정 생성 방법이 있다.

대한민국에서는 14세 이상은 법정대리인의 동의 없이 가입할 수 있는 반면 14세 미만은 법정대리인의 동의가 있어야 가입할 수 있다. 일부 웹사이트는 법률 또는 약관에 의거하여 미성년자의 가입을 제한하거나 보호자의 동의가 있어야 가입이 가능한 경우도 있다.

5.1. 개인정보 수집

대한민국과 중국에서는 가입 시 이름, 휴대 전화 번호 등의 개인정보를 주로 요구하는데 약관의 개인정보 공개에 동의하지 않으면 서비스를 이용할 수 없거나 이용 가능한 서비스가 제한되는 경우가 많다. 이는 타 국가에서 이메일과 비밀번호 정도만 요구하는 것과 대조적인 부분이다. 과거에는 주민등록번호나 대체 수단인 아이핀까지 필요했으나 금융 관련 사이트를 제외하면 불법이 되었다.

개인정보를 수집하는 이유는 본인확인과 금융 서비스 이용을 위해서이다. 특히 게임 이용 연령 확인처럼 나이 제한이 가장 큰 이유이다. 이에 반해 웹사이트에서 많은 개인정보를 수집하지 않는 타 국가에서는 연령확인 질문만 던지는 등 나이 확인 절차가 유명무실한 경우가 많다. 이벤트 당첨 시 경품 배송을 목적으로 정보를 수집하기도 하는데, 개인정보를 잘못 기재해서 이벤트에 당첨되어도 못 받는 경우가 간혹 발생한다.

문제는 웹사이트 운영자의 정보 보안 소홀로 웹사이트가 해킹당하거나 운영자가 개인정보를 팔아넘겨서 개인 정보 유출 사태가 벌어지면 유출된 개인정보가 타인에 의해 악용될 수 있다는 점이다. 따라서 웹사이트에 가입할 때는 사이트의 신뢰도를 점검해보아야 한다. 특히 웹하드나 성인 사이트는 가입 시 개인정보가 유출될 가능성이 높다. 이렇게 유출된 개인정보는 중국등지로 넘어가서 보이스피싱을 비롯한 각종 사기에 동원되어 피해를 입힌다. 이로 인해 법률 개정을 통해 주민등록번호와 대체 수단인 아이핀 수집이 웹사이트 가입 절차에서 빠졌다.

다른 문제는 해외에서 휴대전화 본인인증 등의 본인확인 절차를 요구하는 웹사이트의 가입이 불편하다는 점이다. 대체 수단을 마련하는 웹사이트도 있지만 그렇지 않을 경우 가입 난도가 매우 높아진다.

6. 계정 삭제(탈퇴)

웹사이트의 탈퇴, 즉 계정 삭제는 일반적으로 로그인 상태에서 사이트 설정 페이지에 접근하면 일련의 절차를 통해 가능하다. 대한민국에서는 2015년 8월 18일 정보통신망법 개정으로 1년 이상 로그인하지 않은 경우 자동으로 탈퇴 처리되게 하는 개인정보 유효기간제가 시행된 적이 있었다. # 해당 제도는 2020년 2월 4일부로 개인정보 보호법으로 이관되었으며(동년 8월 5일 시행) 2023년 3월 14일 동법 개정으로 해당 법률조항이 삭제되면서 2023년 9월 15일부로 일몰되었다.

상업적 목적으로 운영하는 웹사이트들은 손해를 막기 위해 탈퇴 버튼을 잘 보이지 않는 위치에 숨겨놓거나 탈퇴 절차를 복잡하게 만드는 경우가 많다. 서비스 제공자에게 직접 탈퇴를 요청해야 하는 경우도 있는데 특히 소셜 로그인을 한 경우 그런 경우가 많다.

일반적으로 웹사이트의 계정은 탈퇴 후 복구가 불가능하다. 동일한 아이디 재사용이 불가능한 경우도 있고, 아이디 재사용은 가능하더라도 탈퇴 이전 정보는 복구할 수 없다.

6.1. 위키 사이트의 탈퇴

대부분의 위키 사이트[5]는 한 번 가입하면 탈퇴가 불가능한데 이는 CCL 배포 조항의 저작권자 표기를 위한 방편이라고 한다. 다만 한국어 위키 중 대표적인 위키 사이트인 나무위키는 탈퇴가 가능하다.

불특정 다수로부터 편집되는 위키 문서의 특성상 작성된 글의 저작권, 책임 주체 등을 작성한 부분별로 명확히 해야 하는데 애초에 수집하는 정보가 이메일 주소뿐인 상태에서 메일 주소 혹은 IP 주소를 노출하는 것보다 아이디로 관리하는 것이 그나마 안전하기 때문이다.

6.2. 해외 사이트의 탈퇴

해외에서는 메이저 웹사이트의 경우 대부분 자진 탈퇴 기능을 제공하지만 그렇지 아니한 경우에는 별도로 탈퇴 기능이 제공되지 않는 곳이 많다. 외국의 불륜 조장 사이트인 애슐리 매디슨도 해킹 사태가 일어나기 전까지는 한번 가입하고 나서 탈퇴하려면 20달러(한화 약 2만 원)을 내야 했다.

해외 사이트를 이용할 때 한국식으로 생각해서 멋모르고 해외 사이트에 가입했다가 탈퇴가 안 되어서 당황하는 경우가 많다.[6] 자체적으로 탈퇴 기능이 없는 일부 해외 사이트에서 탈퇴하고 싶다면 관리자에게 직접 연락하는 방법밖에 없다. 특히 개인정보를 적어놓고 수정도, 탈퇴도 안 되어서 난감한 경우가 많으니 해외 사이트에서 개인 정보를 적는 행동은 삼가는 게 좋다.

6.3. 계정 소유자가 사망한 경우

만약 계정 소유자가 사망할 경우 원래도 사망 그 자체가 문제가 되어 왔지만 이는 특히 문제가 상당한데 사망자의 계정은 생전에 본인이 사용하도록 된 거라 기존 유품과 달리 상속이 불가능하며 이에 따른 법적 문제도 상당해서 전자우편이나 전자책, 디지털 음원 등은 상속이 어려울 수 있다.(참고)

이런 문제점에 대해 몇몇 다국적 포털사이트 업체들이 대안을 제시하고 있다. 메타 플랫폼스의 페이스북은 유족이 원하면 계정을 삭제할 수 있는데 사망자의 출생 및 사망신고서 등 증빙서류를 제출하면 삭제할 수 있고, 경우에 따라 추모계정으로 전환할 수도 있는데 이 경우 사망자의 친구들만 접속이 가능하다. 하지만 사망자의 유족이나 친구들이 추모글을 올리거나 편집하고 싶다는 요구를 하자 2015년부터 '추모계정 관리자' 제도를 도입했다. 동 회사가 운영하는 인스타그램도 이와 비슷한 '기념계정' 제도를 시행 중이다. 마찬가지로 카카오톡도 2023년부터 '추모 프로필' 제도를 시행하는 중이다.

구글은 2015년 4월 11일부터 '휴면계정 관리 서비스'를 개설해서 본인이 구글에 저장된 전자우편이나 사진 등의 데이터 처리 방식을 정하게끔 하며 일정 기간 이상 손을 놓으면 구글 측이 휴대전화로 경고 메세지를 보내고 미리 지정된 친구들에게 이를 공지한다. 이마저도 응답이 없으면 친구들에게 공유되거나 아예 삭제된다. X(구 트위터)는 유족이나 법률대리인 등과 협의하여 사망자의 계정을 비활성화하고 계정까지 지우려면 사망자에 대한 정보, 사망진단서 사본, 신분증 등 증빙서류를 내야 한다.

반면 한국 포털사이트들은 추모계정 같은 사후(死後) 처리방법을 공식적으로 아직 도입하지 않았으나 2015년 8월 18일부터 시행한 '개인정보 유효기간제'[7]에 따라 3개월 동안 접속이 안 된 계정은 휴면으로 돌리고 1년 뒤에는 계정만 유지하고 데이터를 지워버린다. 아예 계정까지 삭제하려면 유족 측이 사망진단서 등 관련 서류를 내야 가능하며 사이버머니는 신분 확인을 거쳐 환급될 수 있다.(참고) 2023년 9월 15일 이후[8]로는 불명.
