1. 개요

쌍동리(雙東里)는 조선조(朝鮮朝)말까지 소쌍령리(小雙嶺里)와 동산리(東山里)로 나누어 있었으나, 1914년 일제 강점기에 행정구역을 축소 개편하면서 소쌍령(小雙嶺)과 동산(東山)을 합쳐 쌍동리(雙東里)로 하였다. 소쌍령은 '오리나무쌍령' 이라고도 하는데, 초월읍의 대쌍령리로부터 3번 국도를 따라 곤지암 방면으로 작은 고개를 넘어서서 우측으로 형성되어 있는 마을이다. 동산은 소쌍령에서 곤지암 방면으로 가다가 우측으로 속칭 '도-골'이라는 마을이다. 쌍동리의 중심마을이다. 이 마을에 도곡초등학교가 있다. 전주 이씨의 세거 마을인 둔전말이 소쌍령과 동산 사이에 있다.

광주시에는 쌍령이라는 낱말이 들어가는 마을이 세 곳이 있다. 즉 경안동(전 廣州邑)의 쌍령동(雙嶺洞)이 있고, 초월읍(草月邑)의 대쌍령리(大雙嶺里)와 소쌍령(小雙嶺)마을이 그것이다.
쌍령이란 령(嶺)이 나란히 있다고 해서 붙여진 이름인데, 경안동의 쌍령동에서 고개를 넘어 오면서 영(嶺)이 있고, 대쌍령리를 지나면 바로 또 작은 영(嶺)이 있어 '쌍령'(雙嶺)이라고 부른다. 출처

경강선 초월역이 여기에 있다. 때문에 공사중이던 시절에 가칭으로 쌍동역이었다. 쌍동JC가 이곳에 위치한다.

여러 아파트 단지로 진입하게 될 경충대로1127번길의 진입로가 그리 좋지 못하다. 또한 이 동네에서 성남이천로로도 진입하게 되는데, 이 부근의 도로 진입 상태가 좋지 못해서 자주 막힌다.

도곡초등학교, 쌍동초등학교, 초월중학교도 이곳에 위치한다.
