1. 개요

사고로 인해 침몰된 배나 잠수함. 나무로 만들어진 선박은 바다에 침몰된 경우 개펄 바닥에 묻히지 않으면 배좀벌레조개의 먹이가 되어 원래의 형체를 유지하지 못하고 바스러지는 경우도 많다.

2. 침몰선 인양

현실에서 찾는 사람들이 많지만 이쪽의 경우 일확천금보다는 역사자료를 얻기 위한 경우가 많다. 보물까지 아니라도 역사적 자료로 값어치는 많다. 해전에서 침몰한 배들도 종종 인양되고 있으며 귀중한 전쟁 역사자료가 된다. 더불어 침몰선을 찾다가 망한 사람도 허다하다. 탐색 장비와 인력 동원에 엄청난 돈이 필요하기 때문이다. 물론 매우 운이 좋아 아주 싼 장비만으로 찾은 희귀한 경우도 있다. 1960년에 캐나다에선 고물 보트 1척, 잠수복 4벌, 먹을거리 정도만 챙긴 3명이 18세기 영국 침몰선을 발견하여 수천억의 수익을 얻은 바 있다.[1] 1980년대 월간 새소년지의 보도에 의하면 이들이 운좋게 발견한 건 당시 해당 해역에서 침몰선이 있다면 조류를 따라 이동했을 거라고 예측해 몇 주 정도 계속 수색했다. 바사 호 같은 경우도 유명하고, 그보다 먼저인 1545년 침몰한 영국군 해군 메리 로즈 호는 당시 공구함부터 선원들이 즐기던 보드게임까지 상태가 매우 양호한 채로 인양되어 당시 선원들 일상에 대한 역사적 자료가 되었다.

종종 그 안에서 수백년된 와인이 발견되어 마시는(!) 경우도 있다고. 스쿠다이빙 장비 개량으로 유명한 해양학자 자크 쿠스토(1910~1997/프랑스)가 400년이 넘는 와인을 건져서 마셨던 적도 있다. 하지만 생각했던 것만큼 맛있지는 않았다고... 전투식량의 보존성에 관련된 일화도 있는데, 2차대전 당시 보관한 전투식량을 50년 넘은 후에도 먹을 수 있었다는 이야기가 있다. 갯벌에 쳐박혀 공기가 차단된 경우 음식이 수백 년 보존되기도 하는데, 한국에서 발견된 고려시대 침몰선에서 곶감, 어포, 장 등의 색깔까지 남아있었다.※

대한민국에선 서·남해안 근해에서 빠른 해류, 조수간만의 차, 풍랑, 복잡한 지형 등의 문제로 항해술이 일천했던 과거에 무수히 많은 배들이 침몰했는데, 가장 대표적인 곳이 충청남도 태안군 근흥면 마도 해역이다.[2] 때문에 서·남해안에서 수중 발굴을 진행하면(주요 무역선) 1척에서 최대 수만 점의 유물이 발견되는 건 흔한 사례라고 할 수 있다. 현재까지 우리나라 근해에서 발견된 침몰선은 통일신라 1척, 고려 10척, 조선 1척, 중국 2척까지 총 14척[3]이다. 지금도 해저, 갯벌 속에 처박혀 있다가 종종 드러나는데 이를 수습하기 위해 국내에서는 국립해양유산연구소가 운영되고 있다. 이런 유물들은 도자기같은 보물 외에도 당시 생활상과 한선의 역사를 실물로 보여준다.

2.1. 사건 및 분쟁

엉터리 침몰선 이야기로 투자를 유도하는 경우도 있다. 한국에서 2000년 12월에 화제가 된 러일전쟁 당시 러시아 군함인 드미트리 돈스코이함 관련 일이 유명한데, 동아건설이란 업체가 저지른 사기극으로 300원 수준이던 주가가 이 침몰선에 150조 원대 보물이 있다고 홍보해서 3265원으로 10배나 치솟았다. 하지만 이듬해 3월 서울지방법원 파산부는 동아건설에 대한 법정관리 폐지를 결정, 그해 6월 동아건설 주가는 꼴랑 30원으로 끝냈다.

그 밖에도 2011년 군산시 앞바다에서 발견되었다는 일본군 화물선도 있다.

1999년 핀란드 해역에서 발견된 침몰선 프라우 마리아 호(Vrouw Maria)는 역사상 최대의 보물선으로 유명하다. 소설 보물선의 모티브가 됐을 정도. 청동조각 수십점과 도자기 수백 개, 최대 10억 유로(1조 8000여억원)의 금은보화와 함께 렘브란트, 얀 반 호옌의 작품 등 진귀한 미술품 27점이 왁스로 봉인된 납상자에 실렸던 것으로 알려졌다. 덕분에 발견 해역인 핀란드와 선적된 물품을 1771년 당시 구입한 러시아, 배를 건조한 네덜란드가 자기 소유라고 서로 싸우는 중이라 결국 아직까지도 인양하지 못하고 있다.

이렇듯 대항해시대 당시 여러 나라를 바다로 오가다 침몰한 배의 소유권 문제는 복잡하다. 2022년에도 스페인 범선 산호세호가 카리브해에 침몰된 것을 미국 탐험대가 발견했는데 당연히 미국은 미국재산을 들인 미국인이 찾은 만큼 소유권은 미국에게 있다고 주장하고 있고 침몰 지점이 영해인 콜롬비아와 배의 원래 소유국인 스페인, 보물의 원래 소유국인 볼리비아, 거기에 인양한 민간업체까지까지 서로 자신의 소유권을 주장하고 있다.#

2.2. 서브컬쳐에서

주로 서브컬쳐에서 쓰는 침몰선은 보물 같은 것을 싣고 가다가 침몰한 배를 말한다. 당연히 그 안에 있는 보물을 노리는 자들을 중심으로 스토리가 진행된다.

대항해시대 온라인에서도 침몰선을 건질 수 있다. 물론 현대에도 건지기 힘든 침몰선을 당시에 어떻게 건지냐고 묻는다면 그 것은 알 수 없다. 인양용 로프 아이템이 따로 있고, 침몰선 인양 중 선원이 죽어나가는 것으로 봐서는 선원을 갈아버리는 듯. 침몰선들 중 일부는 발견물로도 취급되는데 실제 역사 속에서 침몰한 배들이 이런 식으로 발견물이 된다. 위치도 어느 정도 고증을 거쳐서 비슷한 위치에서 찾을 수 있게 되어 있다. 특히 침몰선들 중 하나인 산타 마리아호는 침몰선 인양 전문직업 전직 퀘스트의 선행 발견물이라, 인양 콘텐츠를 제대로 즐기려는 유저들이 눈에 불을 켜고 찾아다닌다. 또, '매병'이라는, 동아시아 침몰선 내 보물상자에서만 나오는 발견물도 있어서 유저들을 더 골아프게 한다.

안티키티라 침몰선 - 1세기의 로마 제국 치하의 그리스의 침몰선이었는데, 선박 자체는 특기할 것이 없으나 거기에 실려있던 물품 중에 과학사상 엄청난 물건이 발굴되어서 학자들이 난리가 났다. 이때 출토된 유물의 정체가 바로 안티키테라 기계이다.

누에스트라 세뇨라 데 아토차 - 스페인 무역선으로 영국인 멜 피셔(1922~1999)가 무려 16년 동안 찾아다닌 끝에 발견했다. 16년 고생을 보상하고도 남는 보석과 금은 보물이 가득하여 무려 4천억 달러에 달하는 가치를 인정받았다. 하지만 영국과 스페인이 서로 자기들 소유라고 2018년까지도 논쟁을 벌이고 있다. 정작 엄청난 돈들여가며 찾아낸 멜 피셔는 끝내 보상받지 못하고 죽었고 피셔의 유족들은 분노해 스페인 측에게 도둑놈이라고 맞서고 있다..스페인에서는 자기들 소유가 되면 피셔 유족들에게 보상금을 내주겠다고 하지만...

센트럴 아메리카 - 1857년 캘리포니아에서 금 21톤을 싣고 뉴욕으로 가던 미국 화물선. 허리케인을 만나 북캐롤라이나주 연안 2백마일 해상에서 침몰했다. 그리고 1989년 토미 톰슨이란 기술자가 심해로봇을 제작, 2천4백m 바닷속에 잠자고 있던 10억 달러(약 1조3천억 원)어치의 보물을 인양했다.
바사 호 - 목재 군함으로서는 가장 온전하게 보존된 사례다.

디아나 호 - 러시아와 일본간의 조약협상을 위해 1854년 일본을 방문했다가 귀환중 태풍을 만나 침몰. 대충의 침몰위치는 알고 있었지만 그 행방은 묘연했다. 우연히 모 버라이어티 방송의 기획에서 이 배의 파편으로 보이는 목재를 발견해 조사작업이 급물살을 타게 되었지만, 지진의 영향으로 배의 위치가 살짝 바뀌었고, 하필이면 그 위로 두텁게 흙이 쌓여버리는 바람에 위치는 파악했는데, 흙을 파내고 조사하는 게 불가능에 가까워져서 다른 의미로 환상의 침몰선이 되어버린 배다. 나름 역사적인 의미도 있는 배인 데다, 해당 방송에서 특집을 꾸며 대대적으로 홍보한 덕에 일본에선 그럭저럭 유명한 침몰선이라고 한다.
새뮤얼 B. 로버츠 - 존 C. 버틀러급 호위구축함이자 USS 존스턴과 함께 사마르 해전의 영웅. 2022년 6월 필리핀 해저 수심 6895m 지점에서 발견. 6460m였던 존스턴의 기록을 갱신하며 세상에서 가장 깊은 곳에 침몰한 난파선으로 기록되었다.
인듀어런스 - 어니스트 섀클턴이 이끌었던 제국 남극 횡단 탐험대의 기함. 1915년 11월 21일 유빙에 갇혀 표류하다 침몰하였고, 침몰로부터 107년이 흐른 2022년 3월 5일 수색팀 Endurance22 Expedition에 의해 남극 웨들해 수심 3008미터 지점에서 발견되었다. 배는 수온이 매우 낮아 미생물의 활동이 적은 남극의 환경 특성상 함미의 명판을 식별할 수 있을 정도로 양호하게 보존되어 있었고 남극 협약에 따라 기념 사적 및 보호물로 지정되어 그대로 남극의 심해에 잠들어 있게 되었다.
